Hi there,

My son took the 11 plus today but I don't understand how the scoring works tbh. He needs to get 205 (pupil premium) we are well within catchment so I think if he gets 205 he's next on the list for a place after children in care. I don't understand what a score of 205 means though. Can someone explain. Is it a certain percentage or something? He hasn't had tutoring as couldn't afford it but he has done some paper practice papers that were free. He said the exam was easy? Easier than the practice papers. But that he missed the last 5 questions on the first exam as they said but pencils down and he hadn't finished the last 5 but he finished the 2nd paper in time and went back to make sure his answers were right. Does missing 5 questions mean he's unluely to pass? For context he works at greater depth across the board and always has but I'm guessing he's at a big disadvantage not having a tutor and needing to pace himself time wise.

He's in with a decent chance, @Tas111, though it may be a bit close - 230 was the cut-off score for BVGS on 1 March for the current year's entry, with 229 the previous year.

They will have offered some more places at slightly lower scores during the months between March and September from the waiting list. Best of luck!

Ah mine got just below 200. So not enough. I am proud of him though for giving it a bash with no tutoring or any real practice.

@Tas111 I do not believe siblings are a factor in getting a place at Bishop Vesey, but you can check the admissions criteria for yourself.

Sorry to hear that, @Hoppityhophops but well done to your DS for giving it a go. Hopefully there is a good local secondary school where he can flourish.

Unfortunately it's a brutal system, where even the brightest can't succeed compared to students that have been tutored for up to 3 years. Onwards and upwards. All the best for the future x

Hoppityhophops · 15/10/2024 22:24

Thank you pocket pairs, you too. If I'm honest, I was a bit gutted as it made me think that he mustn't be naturally bright after all if hundreds of other kids are scoring so much higher than him. They did mock Sats tests at achool and he scored greater depth in them at the end of year 5. When Itold him he didn't get a high enough score he didn't seem bothered at all, not in the slightest. He is a very optimistic person though. It is so hard having to tell them they didn't get a high enough score though as a parent. We really would never of been able to afford a tutor though, so it is what it is.

He did also do the KES one but I'm guessing that we won't even hear from them if he only got 200 on this one.
