11 plus explanation please

Hi there,

My son took the 11 plus today but I don't understand how the scoring works tbh. He needs to get 205 (pupil premium) we are well within catchment so I think if he gets 205 he's next on the list for a place after children in care. I don't understand what a score of 205 means though. Can someone explain. Is it a certain percentage or something? He hasn't had tutoring as couldn't afford it but he has done some paper practice papers that were free. He said the exam was easy? Easier than the practice papers. But that he missed the last 5 questions on the first exam as they said but pencils down and he hadn't finished the last 5 but he finished the 2nd paper in time and went back to make sure his answers were right. Does missing 5 questions mean he's unluely to pass? For context he works at greater depth across the board and always has but I'm guessing he's at a big disadvantage not having a tutor and needing to pace himself time wise.

How did he do in rest of exam, maths, VR and comprehension?

He said comprehension was bit hard maths was OK but I didn't want to ask him too much n put pressure on him if he gets in good if he doesn't no problem

Why does 18th October seem so far away.? I'm impatient already. From everything people are saying on here my son must have a very unrealistic view of how well he did in the exam. Especially if the kids who have been tutored for years found it hard. He came skipping out saying it was easy. But he is an eternal optimistic.

You'll found out soon enough I guess. It's a positive if he think it was easy, as he's probably done ok. But unless he's an outlier (or Chinese), he'll probably score with 1 standard deviation.

pocketpairs · 20/09/2024 13:16

Plus scores in Bham will likely be released on 14th or 15th.

Hoppityhophops · 20/09/2024 14:43

What's an outlier and 1 deviation?

What's an outlier and 1 deviation?

If you look at the 'normal distribution curve, most students will score between 1 standard deviation of the mean. So in Bham, the mean is 200, so the majority taking the test will score around this region. That's why they set the priority score at 224, as that's 12% above the mean, resulting in about 18% of students getting a place. An outlier is someone who scores 2 standard deviations above / below mean, which is about 260 (in Bham)

Hoppityhophops · 20/09/2024 17:35

Oh I see l, thank you. I would of thought the priority score would have dropped with catchment areas now in place. Is that not the case?

The priority score remains, although most of the schools are no longer super selectives. So the majority of attendees are local students

Hoppityhophops · 20/09/2024 18:43

So only around 20 percent of the people who take the test actually get a place? I did wonder from the sheer amount of people who took the test surely all these kids can't be from the catchment area. Hundreds of them.

My son said NVR was hard. He left one or two questions in atleast 3 or 4 sections. He did ok with rest of the subjects.

The test is for any/all of the 17 grammar schools in the West Midlands Consortium. https://westmidlandsgrammarschools.co.uk/

Not all of these schools are King Edward VI schools and not all of them have catchment areas. For example, the two grammars in Sutton Coldfield and the two grammars in Walsall do not have catchment areas.

Find My Test Centre - West Midlands Grammar Schools

If you would like your child to be considered for a place at any of the selective grammar schools in Birmingham, Shropshire, Walsall, Wolverhampton and Warwickshire, they must sit the entrance test at a test centre.

Interesting comments.

My DD has been tutored for a couple of years. Her strength has always been maths and NRV. She came out of the exam saying the 11+ was much easier than the mocks she’s sat, which I had been told was the case. She did have to guess 5 NVR questions due to lack of time though.

She was fortunate enough to have read one of the comprehension pieces already in school. I think a lot of children had also. (edited by MNHQ)

LetItGoToRuin · 25/09/2024 15:40

@Warwickshiremum109 can you 'report' your own post please, and ask MNHQ to remove the reference to the comprehension piece?

Any latecomers to the West Midlands can sit the 11+ any time in the next year and it will use the same test. It is really important not to to give any other children an advantage by telling them the content in advance. It might disadvantage your child if a late entrant does better in the test as a result of information you have shared on the internet, and your child (or any child!) misses out on that last grammar school place as a result.

Your child will have been given instructions at the start of the exam not to discuss content.

LetItGoToRuin · 25/09/2024 15:42

@Warwickshiremum109 I have reported your post myself.

Warwickshiremum109 · 25/09/2024 17:12

Sorry, I was under the impression that they don’t use the same papers for this exact reason.

Apologies if I have misunderstood. Thanks for reporting and updating, I’ve just seen your post.

Hoppityhophops · 29/09/2024 15:56

Oh 17 schools. I see. Goodness, I don't have much clue about all this. I'm not actually that bothered if he passes or not. Hasn't cost us a penny for him to give it a bash. The closest school is a really good one anyway. Im just impatient to know either way.
