Brit School year 12 entry opinions

We are considering the Brit school for my daughter. She is currently in year 9 so we could apply either for year 10 or 12.

I would like to hear from people whose children attend or have attended? What have their experience been? What have they done after they finished year 13.

@Mumster40 My son is at the Brit year 11 and he's got friends doing MT and they did get straight offers

Mumster40 · 11/02/2025 14:12

@Pegjes44 ah interesting. It seems like the recall is only for external applications then. Which makes sense. Did any of the existing pupils get a "no"?

Pegjes44 · 11/02/2025 14:22

@Mumster40 My son knows someone on the reserve list but his friends from MT did all get a yes.
not all of them doing MT in year 11 did reapply for MT

Zsuray · 11/02/2025 14:34

The Brit school is a great school. My daughter started in year 10 and is now applying for year 12. The kids are decent yes there is competition but its all healthy. No bullying and the teachers are some of best. The travel is tough as we are an hour and a half away. Trians are the best method of transport as the bus is always on diversion. But she loves being there.

my daughter is in year 10 and is looking to apply for year 12 Brit school, in the music strand, she doesn’t know what the application process looks like or if she has to have any certain grades in music or play an instrument. Does anyone have any advice?

My DC has been lucky enough to be offered a place on the MT strand for sixth form. Could anyone whose DC is already at the school advice where the students go to after graduating? Is it drama schools or do any of the leavers go to University? I'm concerned that without A-Levels they will be limited. I'd also love to hear about the standard of teaching and whether your DC is happy there. many thanks!

Dal2 · 12/03/2025 17:49

I think there is a limit on A levels. One extra they can do. The strand counts as Levels. My daughter has made it back in for theater. She's been there since year 10. The teachers are amazing the school is one of the best. In our view. She's really happy the kids are great!

Mumster40 · 12/03/2025 17:50

@Dal2 that's really helpful thank you

My daughter is doing yr12 MT at the moment, she's so happy there (I've never seen her this happy with study before) and always say she can't wait to go back to school. There are so many universities offer MT degree course which she intend to carry on her study. The MT course at Brit is equivalent to 3 A levels. You can do another additional A level on top also. My daughter had a career fair back in Feb (so many universities were there)

DS is Year 13 and finishes this year after starting in Y10 - he hasn't always had the easiest time there - it may be his course or just his experience. I have posted before, I wont go fully in to it again - but I feel that it is important to see so-so reviews next to all the gushing ones - seems DS's face doesn't fit and while he has friends he doesn't feel part of the big BRIT family.

He has however, done better than if he had stayed in his previous school, even though he had more friends in his old school. He hates it, and from a parent point of view it is sad to see him sad when he hasn't been invited to another party or someone has called him weird - his future is probably more secure than if he had stayed in an OK high school.

He is very very ready to leave and not looking forward to going back on Monday (they have been on a two week break because the school has different school holidays to other places).

His course is great though - he is doing Theatre and it is equivalent UCAS points to 3 A Levels and has involved more work than people think when they look at performing courses - they did Shakespeare in Y12 and he had to do a lot of research and history around his play, Shakespeare, politics etc as well as the acting - it is not easy or all practical stuff. If their GCSEs are good enough they can do an A level along side their main course - but it is hard work and a lot of students drop it when the workload kicks in.

Being there has not changed DS's love of theatre and he is still very sure about his future being there but his drama school choices are being dictated by ones that aren't like BRIT etc (eg LIPA was a no for him because BRIT people were involved in setting it up).

Of his peers - they are mostly applying to drama schools for next year - some are applying to university to study theatre or related courses. Many have offers already some are still auditioning. DS is one of the youngest in the year and has decided to take a gap year and wants to earn some money and grow up a bit before applying to drama school next year. He did unsuccessfully apply to two this year - but that was more for experience of the audition process and to keep the school happy who were encouraging him to do the UCAS form. When he takes it seriously next year, he will apply for more than two and avoid ones where his worst tormentors end up.

Careers advice and support at the school is very good and they attract a lot of universities, drama schools and business offering apprenticeships etc at the careers fair in Y12.

momfrombrooklyn · 25/03/2025 00:19

Hi, just checking if anyone Evers gets into Theatre Strand post 16 from the reserve list?

Pegjes44 · 25/03/2025 05:54

Hi @momfrombrooklyn ,
yes I know that some of the internal kids had already refused their places, not sure how many.
but you will not know now because some kids are appealing.
its a long process…

Isithalftermyet · 28/07/2025 14:33

Has anyone on the reserve list been offered a place for MT starting this September? DD on the reserve list but thinking we might accept an offer elsewhere now if the reserve list isn't going to move. Thx all!
