AQA GCSE English reviews

Quite a few of us in the big GCSE results thread are looking at getting AQA English reviewed.

Starting a new thread in case anyone wants to share updates about the review process or have a bit of a moan about AQA!

DD got 8s and 9s in mocks and all classwork. She's an avid reader and writer and she knew the texts inside out. She felt the exams went well. But she got a 6 in Lang and a 5 in Lit. School is definitely asking for Lang to be reviewed.

Yep back here yesterday with no adjustments on any of the marks. So it remains a 5 and 1 mark off a 6! Oh well..onwards!

We submitted English Language AQA on the deadline, so 23rd September and the wait is endless! I didn't want to as exactly mid grade boundary but DD was insistant. Really regreting it now having looked at some Uni entrance requirements but it's done now.

The wait is indeed endless! It's coming up to 4 weeks here. We're waiting on all 4 English papers. Sorry some are getting no adjustments.

Are you AQA too @Clemmin ?

Clemmin · 11/10/2024 09:27

@SwayingInTime Yes, it's AQA. DS got all the review results last night (after 25 calendar days). English Lit no change (missed an 8 by 2 marks), English Language went up from a 6 to a 7 (originally missed a 7 by 1 mark).

He also got his 9 for computer science (strongest subject). He missed a 9 by 1 mark too.

He's delighted to never have to sit an English or Spanish exam ever again.

Fab results and thank you for replying
We might not hear until next week then!

My son's school suggested a remark for his AQA English Lang because he was close to the grade boundary... I submitted the request and then after reading all the comments on here I have been regretting my choices, however, happy to say we got the result today, son went up 4 marks on paper 2 and moved up a grade from 8 to 9. No change on paper 1 (school did not suggest remark on that but I went all in). Just wanted to share an outcome and also share timeline for anyone else still waiting, we submitted the request on 23rd September.

We unfortunately have a very sad story to share with regards to the AQA English literature exams this year! My child is dyslexic, she uses a word processor in exams and all JCQ ‘guidelines’ were followed. On results day we saw she was awarded a 0 for paper 1. Which gave her a 2 overall.
We queried it immediately with AQA who after searches (they say but provided no proof) confirmed the script had been lost before scanning. Because it’s then treated as a lost script my daughter was awarded a 3! The Z-Score calculates a mark based on an algorithm using the national average. My daughter actually passed paper 2, she got a 4 but because the national average score for paper 1 was lower than paper 2 they awarded her a 3 (1 mark off a 4!!) We had her paper 2 re-marked and the mark didn’t change!! We then appealed but were told they had followed all JCQ guidance so the result stands, we have no further rights to appeal! We never received an apology for their mistake! What AQA forget is that there is a person behind the number, who knows if she’ll need to say in the future whether she passed all her GCSE’s?! She can’t say that now because of their failure of systems.
We are so angry and frustrated! It hasn’t stopped her from continuing on but the system is so incredibly unfair and I now have no confidence in AQA.

@Monopoly76 - I had similar a couple of years ago with a candidate who typed. He ended up with a 7 instead of the 9 he should have had. The paper was never located. This is one of the reasons I am nervous at the idea they're going to go digital for exams.

Monopoly76 · 18/10/2024 11:50

@GrammarTeacher thank you, unfortunately it looks like there’s a disparity between schools in whether they save (securely) typed scripts. I am aware of a few cases where scripts have been accepted post date as those schools saved the work securely, sadly ours did not! I personally feel that there may be bias in the system for this very reason!

MrsHamlet · 18/10/2024 20:05

All centres should securely store typed scripts

Finally had results (actually had the refund of the fee with no notification of the grade increase as it took so long!).

4 GCSEs, 3xAQA, 1xWJEC, all increased one grade, made a real difference to DD but leaves a very bad taste in the mouth.
