AQA GCSE English reviews

Quite a few of us in the big GCSE results thread are looking at getting AQA English reviewed.

Starting a new thread in case anyone wants to share updates about the review process or have a bit of a moan about AQA!

DD got 8s and 9s in mocks and all classwork. She's an avid reader and writer and she knew the texts inside out. She felt the exams went well. But she got a 6 in Lang and a 5 in Lit. School is definitely asking for Lang to be reviewed.

Friends kid was 1 pt of a 7 had 8 in mocks for lang got 8 in lit but 6 for lang got back marking was within reason no change.

Does anyone know what happens if you appeal the grade? This is after a review yielded no change in mark at all. Don’t ask…. My son won’t let it go

Has the teacher reviewed it? Are they certain there should be a grade change?

My understanding is that the school can appeal and the exam board review it again.

You have to have grounds to appeal but that is done by the most senior people in the team.

I believe it’s same as the review process with higher fees and takes longer for the outcome. The school needs to be supportive of the appeal. This means they should have looked at your child’s scripts and found grounds for appeal. We are also going that route but the school has warned us that the mark can go up, down or stay same.

for AQA it costs over £100 to appeal. I'm not sure if that is per subject or per paper.

Has your son seen his script? Does he know which specific questions he thinks deserves more marks? I don't know how the appeal process works (i.e. whether you have to give reasons for appeal) but unless he's looked at it and can say where he thinks he should have been given more marks then I'm not sure how realistic his chances are

DS gained six extra marks for Eng Lan, taking him from a 5 to a 6.
History remained unchanged.
Waiting on Lit. School weren't going to send it but have now.
He got 5's in all three and was predicted 7's.

Been meaning to update, DS's English Language moved up from a couple of marks off a 4 to 5 after review. This is what he was predicted and around what he achieved for everything else. He had already started resit classes so he's over the moon! I think it's terrible that some might not have gone through the process and be resitting. It's missing out on a crucial grade for some kids.

DD asked for a review of Literature as she got a 6 and was shocked. The review has been successful and she has now been awarded an 8.

Great news for the increases, congratulations to them all! Sorry to hear about some staying the same - we too have had that. @MystifyMe and @DelilahBucket @RobinEllacotStrike with the English Language and Literature increases were they over two papers or a single paper. Great news not having to resist the exam @MystifyMe and to exceed the 4 by securing a 5 is awesome! 👏👏👏

Ours English language didn’t move despite 2 teachers saying it was v harshly marked, back within a week of request. Still think it was harsh and hard to see that the exam boards don’t have a vested interest in keeping the marks the same.

@Lyla78 we reviewed both papers on advice from the teacher after she looked at them. He went up 5 marks on paper 1 and 7 marks on paper 2. I'm chuffed and livid in equal measure 😂

Except I'm back to working out my stats again! And we're still waiting for two more! But a 6 into a 7 is a golden zone for my targets and more importantly excellent news for the student!

It must be incredibly frustrating. I felt happy for DS getting his 3 to a 4 but felt just as pleased for his teacher, she had worked so hard with him as getting a boy with autism, adhd and phonological processing disorder through Eng Lit can't be easy and she was convinced he'd get a 4/5.

English lit back here - zero change to marks so stayed a 6. Disappointing as school thought one question was very harshly marked.

Sorry to hear that @manicmumsday and @spacecowboys- our Paper 2 Language came back with no extra marks despite several teachers saying question 5 should be higher. They are taking quite long to come back and it seems mostly with no adjustments.

Hi, we're still waiting on AQA English lit and language reviews here. That's been over 3 weeks. Did anyone else not submit until mid-Sept? How long did you have to wait? 😬
