Is my daughter the only one?

BubbysMummy · 24/04/2024 19:20

My daughter is 10 and is slightly overweight. She starts Secondary in September and we have tried several white school shirts from high street stores and online and none of them fit. She is average height and busty for her age and is already in 16/17 year school shirts. She is also wearing stretch jersey trousers as tailored ones just do not fit. This is frustrating and stressful.

I measured her and she is 36" bust, 30" waist, 33" hip and 27" inside leg.
I even tried womens workwear trousers and shirts in size 14 and they were too small. Why is it 15yrs in casual clothes fits her but adult sizes don't? Am I going mad? Is there something I don't know? How is she going to get through Secondary?

I feel like I missed a memo somewhere. If you know of anywhere that does larger sizes please let me know. TIA

Try David Luke as well. I've had to buy school trousers from there as all other ones are too short for DS. They do a good range for girls and boys but aren't cheap.

This. M&S largest shirt size is 41”. David Luke for trousers and as someone else says Trutex shirts are also good.

Looks like she's about 5.2. In which case she's fairly tall. She's also quite busty for her age.
If she's big busted shirts are a nightmare.
Not surprising she's wearing bigger.
She may not get bigger boobs but she might grow taller.
Get stretchy if you can. Fit much better.

OP, I know this is hard to hear, but I'm looking at that picture and it says to me that your 10 year old dd is obese.

Please seek help for her from a paediatric dietician.

Nowanextraone · 25/04/2024 20:00

Definately try Trutex shirts.

Tbh I was thinking that. OP I'd get that picture removed if I were you.

I would just feed her homemade soup for the next few months, she'll be a healthy weight soon enough. That's what my mother did for me when I went through a chubby teenage phase. Every time I got hungry I'd go to the fridge and get a bowl of her amazing soup. The weight fell off.

Flyhigher · 25/04/2024 20:22

The shirts are small sizes. Many girls develop later.
She may well not grow a lot bigger just get taller.

Christ, an eating disorder waiting to happen.

Sorry OP but there has to be some mis-truths here.

If your daughter is an adult height and adult measurements then finding uniform should be no issue.

After all every 16 year old girl in the country manages with school uniform. And the sixth formers at DDs school all have white blouses etc. As did I until 18 when I was a size 12 and a D cup.

Have you bought her an age 15 school skirt/shirt? What is it about them that don't fit?

My DDs school skirts (for secondary) we buy in " not in ages. Same for the jumpers and blazers.

They start at 20" waist / 26" chest and go up to 38"/44".

There simply must be uniform to fit!

Have reported this. Awful dangerous advice.

PurpleChrayn · 25/04/2024 21:11

I cannot realistically set a deadline for weight loss by Secondary.

Why on earth not?

TobaccoFlower · 25/04/2024 22:40

Could you go to a dedicated school uniform supplier? They tend to have a bigger range of sizes. Eg. For skirts you can choose the waist size and the length and they have a bigger range of sizes

RecruitmentGuru · 25/04/2024 22:42

Good idea from @TobaccoFlower they also have the skirts with elastics. When I was a child OP my mum would buy the material and my Aunt would make my skirts. Shirts were always C&A! It was a lot of hassle so I do really feel for you! I hated having a different uniform to everyone else!

BubbysMummy · 26/04/2024 07:38

Thank you all for your insights and advice.

Trust me when I say that those of you who have commented on my dd's size and weight you have said nothing I haven't heard before - especially from my own very critical mother. Good thing I have a thick skin.

I did not want to share all the other issues my daughter and my family may or may not have in this forum as I just wanted uniform advice.

I did not realise it would snowball like this. I don't think I will be using this forum again. It's actually worse than our parents WhatsApp group.

Thanks and goodbye.

@BubbysMummy nobody has said anything that would require you to have a thick skin.

Noicant · 26/04/2024 09:03

Just buy whatever she will fit into and then tailor them down. It’s more expensive but at least she will have clothes that fit her.

DD is very tall for her age and we sometimes have problem because she’s needs clothes for children much older than her but the dimensions are all wrong and she needs more room in the leg, it’s a pain in the ass, she’s a healthy weight and very active as well it’s just where she carries her weight.

I’m sure OP knows her DD is overweight and is trying to support her without giving her an ED. I was slightly overweight as a child my mothers “help” tuned me into an obese teenager.
