Is my daughter the only one?

BubbysMummy · 24/04/2024 19:20

My daughter is 10 and is slightly overweight. She starts Secondary in September and we have tried several white school shirts from high street stores and online and none of them fit. She is average height and busty for her age and is already in 16/17 year school shirts. She is also wearing stretch jersey trousers as tailored ones just do not fit. This is frustrating and stressful.

I measured her and she is 36" bust, 30" waist, 33" hip and 27" inside leg.
I even tried womens workwear trousers and shirts in size 14 and they were too small. Why is it 15yrs in casual clothes fits her but adult sizes don't? Am I going mad? Is there something I don't know? How is she going to get through Secondary?

I feel like I missed a memo somewhere. If you know of anywhere that does larger sizes please let me know. TIA

No offence OP, but your child needs to lose weight if at all possible. She is not only slightly overweight by anyone's standards.

There have been more than 2 commenters sharing their concerns about the dd weight and size. My comment was written with sensitivity not blame or rudeness.

This is a forum where people share their thoughts. Some of us are genuinely concerned that the OP is not fully grasping the seriousness of the situation. We base that concert on her choice of minimising language.

Sometimes people need to hear things. That's nuts out if live. Often it's concern. You don't think like us, ok. That's your way of thinking. It's not ours.

GreenWheat · 25/04/2024 06:10

Does your DD have a medical issue that affects her size? The school may be able to make some uniform compromises if so.

This. Nobody is fat shaming the girl, but believe me, the other kids at secondary school will be merciless. Help her now before she gets targeted. At 10 she has the metabolism to shift the weight.

EndorsingPRActice · 25/04/2024 08:14

I had a similar problem with my dd, Matalan was the best we found. And the shirts lasted well too.

BubbysMummy · 25/04/2024 17:47

I clearly used the wrong term there but I am by no means deluded about my child's weight and size. I know she needs to lose some weight and weight are working on it.

What I actually have a problem with right now is school uniforms. I cannot realistically set a deadline for weight loss by Secondary.

There are girls in her class who are over 5'8"" and they are not even 11 yet. There are girls who are wearing bras with a C cup in her year.

The sizes in Marks and Next are shocking. Even as a 7 year old when she was most definitely not overweight she was wearing 12 year old clothes because she has really long legs. The problem is also that everything is slim or skinny fit - it is really hard to find straight leg or slight bootcut trousers anywhere. Even in the boys sections.

The purpose of this post was to find if anyone else had the same issues with clothing sizes. Not to "Mansplain" about healthy eating. By the way this is my daughter. As you can see she is overweight but hardly morbidly obese.

Op...I just did a quick google and Asda apparently do a plus fit school unform range

RhubarbAndGingerCheesecake · 25/04/2024 18:02

DD2 is in Asda women's black trousers size 12 - she is very thin (doesn't take after me ) and tall at 15 but school trousers even larger sizes did not fit right size 12 women's did - so I'd just try larger women's size (and cut label out if worried).

I think their blouses go up to age 18.

Other wise I agree with PP try Matalan. It is awkward when they don't fit the cut or fabrics -and it does take some looking.

fashionqueen1183 · 25/04/2024 18:12

Im suprised you’ve found that with M&S. My daughter is very tall for her age, I find M&S come up largest/width size wise compared to most places so are too big for her due to her height but, they often handily have adjustable waist bands so we can buy the right length and then pull the waist right in as she is average size waist. Some of their styles also have hems you can let down which is good for tall kids? They also do some bootleg style school trousers which are stretchy waist and soft material. Maybe try online, for a wider range? Sometimes the stores won’t have what you need.

TobaccoFlower · 25/04/2024 18:20

MultiplaLight · 24/04/2024 21:16

A 33inch waist would be a woman's size 16 too.

Does she have additional needs to be this size at 10? You may be able to get a uniform exemption if so.

OP said 30" waist

Yes, I find M&S comes up ridiculously large too. My 10 year old is still in her age 8 M&S skirts and shirts.

jonnyhatesjazzzzz · 25/04/2024 18:26

Try David Luke as well. I've had to buy school trousers from there as all other ones are too short for DS. They do a good range for girls and boys but aren't cheap.

We would be too if mine wasn’t so tall- as yes I agree you usually you need about two years younger for the waist. Anything without an elasticated adjustable waistband I can cinch in is a no go!
Tops are ok though- they last for ages due to the sizing!

OMGitsnotgood · 25/04/2024 18:30

No experience myself but am wondering whether boy's shirts might be bigger? Buttons might be the other way round but might solve the immediate problem?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/04/2024 18:32

My Dd was like this. A bit overweight, but getting stuff to fit was a nightmare. She was also very tall in y7,

All those people having a go about weight. Shes 5ft 11 now and slim and beautiful.

l packed it on at 10/11. But stretched out at 13.

Agree. No ten year old should be struggling to fit into an adult size 16.

Singleandproud · 25/04/2024 18:35

Give Next Women's tailored bootcut trousers a try, in the relevant size but petite if she's not tall.

Looking at that picture I think if you keep portion sizes the same or slightly smaller she will stretch alot of that out as she has her growth spurt in the next year or two. Just don't be tempted to increase carbs whilst she's growing but plenty of protein.

Favouritefruits · 25/04/2024 18:42

High school is tough enough without sending her in poor fitting clothes, from the looks of that picture yes your Dd is clearly overweight but doesn’t look anywhere near the dimensions you have given! You’ll have to buy clothes then get them tailored if you can’t find any, I’m surprised plus fit M&S don’t fit. There’s a girl in my Ds class who’s over weight but her parents make her look worse buy giving her the correct size school summer dress but not shortening it so it’s far too long!

Iritatedbyarguingmn · 25/04/2024 18:42

OP I have an issue getting uniform for a very tall skinny child . I tear my hair out . Historically M and S have been the best but at the moment their offering seems less diverse than it was last year . I am wondering if the stock is just not in yet .

The brand David Luke might be worth a look too

MollyRover · 25/04/2024 18:42

It's certainly a difficult age for girls but I think you need to be a bit more realistic with yourself, one doesn't have to be morbidly obese, they can just be obese. Either way it's good that you're tackling her weight.

I always find with Next and M&S clothes for DCs that they're far too wide and mine are taller than average.

Summerpussy · 25/04/2024 18:50

My daughter was a woman's size 14 clothes at primary school .
She's now a 25 year old adult
And a size 12
She still wears her size 14 fitted winter coat from secondary school ...
My kids ..all 4 of them were the biggest and tallest in their class by year 6
By year 8/9 they were just average builds.
Some grow faster than others

Littletreefrog · 25/04/2024 18:54

Try actual uniform suppliers. The shirts are usually more expensive than high street but they have a huge range of sizes and fits and can usually order something in if necessary.

Exactly.

Mine was a 14 in y5 and 6. She was also way taller than the rest of the class.
Shes 5ft 11 and a 12 now.

TheDogsAFloofyFool · 25/04/2024 19:41

Have you tried firms online, like Alexandra Workwear, OP? They stuff lasts ages and there’s plenty of tidy shirts, trousers etc in huge range of sizes and styles.
I always get my work stuff from them, can recommend them. Your daughter needs to have room in her clothes as she’s in them all day, so this may just be the answer.

TheDogsAFloofyFool · 25/04/2024 19:42

Forgot to add, Premier workwear is slightly cheaper, and I have also used those too. Seem to be online only. Again, good range of styles, sizes etc.
