How does it work with occasional places? Do you have to be on the original WL or can you approach a school not previously applied to at a later point?

Both are possible. I would imagine in this calendar year it will be WL people only, but the more time goes by the more they will ask you to take a new test anyway.

thanks

Oh Wow ! Which school did you accept ? Reason you declinded Seven oaks with Scholarhip !! That feels painful

CONGRATS on accepting the school of your DS choice

Thanks, DD chose SPGS in the end. It was indeed a painful decision to decline the offer.

QGMum · 06/03/2024 08:24

For those of you on WLs, don’t give up hope yet. Places can come up over the summer and right up until the start of term when people who have sat on more than one offer can only turn up to one school or there are changes in personal circumstances. One dc pulling out of SPGS can sets off a ripple effect of WL offers. The state school WLs also continue to move over the summer and this can have an impact too.

CocoC · 06/03/2024 08:44

Thanks for the encouragement @QGMum good to hear. I do wonder how many people are keeping a couple of options open, I know a few who have paid deposits without being sure they will take the place.

Pyrfwondering · 06/03/2024 08:46

Just sharing this here... RGS boys don't do football during Games, but there are opportunities to play football competitively

I asked about this on the open day at RGS - this only starts from y10.

Fantastic. St Pauls Girls is a fantastic choice.

For me - the differentiating factors would have been location ( kent vs Hammer smith) and the fact you can choose IB at Seven Oaks

Otherwise SPGS is a brilliant choice and the right choice.

That’s really annoying. The schools probably hate it too.

That is annoying for WL children! Do you know which schools?

Sadly, I don't think the schools will care that much as often the deposit is non-refundable, so they get free money in effect!

Location/IB aside very different options

Coed with boarding option vs day girls school

This is possible. It’s a bit of an arse if you run a school that has a lot of children pull out shortly before the fees become due.

CruCru · 06/03/2024 13:02

I have heard of people accepting both an 11+ school and a 13+ school - so they can move their son if the 11+ school doesn’t end up suiting him.

Absolutely agree and if lots did this and the school did not have enough children on waiting lists they would be in trouble... the system is not nice and I feel for people on waiting lists.

redrobin75 · 06/03/2024 14:12

Once you get to the first day of the summer term in April the parent has committed to the autumn term fees too. Admissions depts have seen every scenario over the years and build a small amount of movement into their offers.

minipie · 06/03/2024 14:57

Absolutely it will be annoying for a school if someone pulls out long after acceptances. Even if the school gets to keep the deposit, they still need to fill the place or they’ll lose a child’s worth of fees. By that point (depending on how late it is) the families on their WL will likely have paid a deposit at another school, persuaded their child and themselves it’s for the best, worked out transport arrangements, etc etc. Hard for a family to then do a U turn and accept a late offered WL place. I suspect many will not want to, which leaves the original school scrabbling.

FrontedAdverbial · 06/03/2024 15:28

From our LA but applies generally: Richmond council requesting that everyone acts on their state offers asap, by 15 March, including releasing the offer if intending to take up an independent place.

We have friends waiting to get into their preferred state school, so this would be a big help 🙏

The schools have a relationship with each other. If loads of people accept places at two schools but then overwhelmingly go with school A, it's going to sour things between school A and B.

We basically lost hope but today our WL place has turned into an offer! So it is never too late!!

Summerma · 07/03/2024 12:38

Congrats!!

ALongProcess · 07/03/2024 12:47

@Laulau26 which school was that? Congratulations!

Balhamdad11 · 07/03/2024 12:47

@Laulau26 congrats! What school was it, if you don’t mind sharing?

Laulau26 · 07/03/2024 13:17

St John's. My son changed his mind a few times and then became fixated on that.. so phew!
