Parent of an older DD at Surbiton High here. A really lovely school. Of course there are ups and downs for all teens but the school have been amazing and are very responsive and supportive which counts for so much. I can highly recommend it. Loads of clubs, sports, arts, drama, D of E, rowing, skiing, horse riding, book clubs, language clubs, etc. Tons of things to get involved in.

Now looking for DS but no Surbiton High for boys at secondary exists and I can’t find anything that fits the same blend of focus on learning and support without the overwhelming pressure you get at some schools.

We are looking at Ibstock for him so would anyone know what CAT scores are needed for 11+? I’ve asked in another thread but maybe here there are more eyeballs!

Also anything about sport for boys at Ibstock, DS not sporty and hates rugby so would like to know if it’s compulsory.

Epsom, Reeds, Kings House, Kew House, Radnor House?

@farfallarocks are you sure Dulwich is doing an offer holder day ? I have been told they dont🤷🏻‍♀️
@Vive42 dont think that way , we have been told same about our son and he got an offer and others offer 2 that were considered “a stretch” he still has time to practice.

Dulwich doesn’t host open holders event

Wondermumof4 · 28/02/2024 14:17

@Happyof2 thanks that is what i thought …

It might also suggest CAT is not a good objective measurement on natural ability/intelligent anymore, it can be skewed and improved by external inference.

I completely agree! However it’s what the schools use for entry so my hands are tied.

I can guarantee because I know, that KGS does not require CATs of 130+. First, the head told me directly (because I asked him) that he doesn’t look at CATs. Secondly, record numbers of DS’s classmates received offers from KGS this year and I know through parents talking that the vast majority had CATs between 118-125 max. All who made it to interview in all sets, top, middle and bottom recieved offers. Around 12-15 or so!

King’s and Hampton only offered to those in top set / all of whom had +130 CATs.

KGS is very easy to tutor for as it’s just Multiple choice comprehension, small written passage and comparatively straightforward maths.

Vive42 · 28/02/2024 21:41

Thank you for all the helpful suggestions. Lots to think about then.

ItsMeHi48 · 29/02/2024 11:34

All those wait-listers out there, how are you holding up?! I’m finding it v difficult not to keep dwelling on it… especially now I know the school (FHSS) has moved to its wait list but just not come to us yet 🫠 trying to stay hopeful/patient!

travelturtle · 29/02/2024 11:35

Ibstock waitlist moving

fudgeandcookie · 29/02/2024 11:51

Mothernearest · 25/02/2024 12:08

We have an offer as well and would love to hear more. From reading some posts in last year’s sw london 11+ thread, my understanding is that any negative reviews were taken down so maybe parents are reluctant to say anything now. Maybe it is changing and improvement is underway.

Have a DS at IPS (year 9) - very happy there, lots of nice families, teachers are good, pastoral care going up and up, grounds are nice. he’s very happy. We are happy

fudgeandcookie · 29/02/2024 11:52

Would love first hand experiences of FHSS parents please? We are looking for inside view from actual parents, behind the gloss so to speak. Thanks so much!!

SeccyScooz · 29/02/2024 11:54

We spoke with admissions at our two waitlist schools yesterday and neither will have much info until Friday late afternoon. Very hard not to dwell on it as you say @ItsMeHi48

minipie · 29/02/2024 11:54

I know a lot of people who are just making their final decisions now, and releasing any last offer(s) they were holding. Us included. And of course there are state offers tomorrow.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there are a whole bunch of WL offers on Monday - possibly even late on Monday - before the Tuesday deadlines.

fudgeandcookie · 29/02/2024 11:54

farfallarocks · 28/02/2024 11:07

Someone reported FHSS movement in another thread. Someone told me they had a waitlist place from Emanuel but another poster called admissions and apparently no wait list places have been offered! So who knows. I think Friday will be a big day as people release offers and make a decision as well as state school offers. Good luck, limbo is just awful place

Yes that was me - I spoke to Emanuel admissions and they flatly denied they were doing offers yet..no promises made by them but they kept mentioned Tuesday (offer day) as key milestone (obviously) for WL to start moving (or not …last year it basically didn’t)

Thewaitisawful · 29/02/2024 12:06

How often is too often to call the school? I was told to call back Friday but gave in and called today, they are saying things are likely to move on Monday... They are still collating the info and will be doing this over the weekend, but new offers are likely to come out on Monday...
Hard to believe that parents with more than one offer have still not decided on which school they want to go with!

QuiteAJourney · 29/02/2024 12:14

Sending best wishes to those on WL.

Really interesting and encouraging for those waiting that some WL are moving... even if not for the school you are not waiting for, worth considering that there is a domino effect - a DC being offered and accepting a school is coming of the list of potential acceptances or the waitlist of another school. So FHSS moving may impact those waiting for Emanuel, IPS or others.

ScreenPrinting · 29/02/2024 12:15

We’ve released G&L today so I hope if anyone here is on WL that it comes to you!

vivalasviva · 29/02/2024 12:17

DD got a waitlist place a few years ago. It was the day after State school offerings and there was a deluge of late acceptances, wait list offerings etc. don't give up yet!

minipie · 29/02/2024 12:34

Yes I wouldn’t be at all surprised if there are a bunch of WL offers on Monday.

State school offers knock on, plus a lot of people like us who have found that final decision between their top two really hard. I have just sent the acceptance in but it has been such a difficult choice. I know a few people making their final choice around now.

Plus, something I hadn’t fully appreciated (perhaps stupid of me) - an acceptance requires quite a lot of admin - both parent signatures, birth certificate, passport, medical info if relevant, and of course the hefty deposit - all this can take time to pull together which may add a few days to when people send it in, even after they have decided.

If you are on a WL and may need to decide quickly, suggest having these things to hand and maybe have pre scanned copies!

farfallarocks · 29/02/2024 12:36

@minipie where did you decide in the end?

minipie · 29/02/2024 12:38

Alleyns. DD’s preference. Have just turned down Emanuel which was SO hard to do.

QuiteAJourney · 29/02/2024 12:40

@minipie that is really good advice. We had friends last year who had to move at speed and having everything ready to go is really useful.

Also, that very reason explains why decisions take time to trickle through the system - even when people accept, it takes time until everything is checked and the school confirms that all is in order... and then people feel comfortable releasing any outstanding offer.

ncsurrey22 · 29/02/2024 12:45

We turned down Ibstock this morning, great to hear WL is moving now! We had held on bc we had this silly fear that something goes wrong with the admin / acceptance of our first choice. Ibstock sent out an email yesterday asking people to reply asap so that may have prompted some decisions finally.

it’s a really good sign that WLs at several schools are starting to move and there should be much more on Monday morning once Tiffin /HBS offers are out tomorrow afternoon.

best of luck to all those waiting!

Wondermumof4 · 29/02/2024 13:12

I think it will all move on Monday like by end of day …. It’s stressful

@Vive42 My DS at IPS (year 9) and we are happy. He is in Rugby squad. They do it 2nd term not 1st like some schools. There are two teams - As and Bs plus the touch team (non contact). You can choose to be non contact and you dont have to be in a squad but it’s encouraged. In terms of Games lessons during 2nd Term for boys - it is rugby and you don’t get to opt out of that. Hope that helps. They do a lot of other sport and a new climbing wall… football, cricket, tennis, rowing, cycling, golf, waterpolo, swimming, athletics etc

Does it imply that KGS has become less selective this year? The school is top on our list with co-ed is our preference.
