Triple science or combined science

Does anyone have any advice on whether it is better to do Triple Science or combined science. DD is in Y10 and hasn't been given the option yet (and may not be given the option) but I wanted advice in case she is given the choice. A parent told me the school usually give the option of doing Triple Science or Combined science to those that have the ability.

DD is predicted a 7 at the moment in science, she doesn't seem to think she is very good at science, but she enjoys Biology and would like to be a nurse. She has talked about doing Biology at A Level.

If she was given the option would it be better to do triple science if she can, especially if she wants to do Biology at A Level? Or as she is only predicted a 7 would it be better to focus on Combined science?

If it really is an option I’m surprised she/you haven’t been told

I’d message the teacher and ask before pondering further.
Seems unlikely if she is already y 10
but does happen according to one poster here…..

(completely sidetracking but I think o am the only person on earth to ever do single award science)

School may actually decide in year 11. I know my dd school.made the decision after the first mocks. She was always a triple candidate 9,8,7 doing chem & bio A level . However many of the second top set were dropped to combined science and did well she did comment the combined science kids in her sixth form a levle group did have a bit to catch up on. Be warned its a huge jump form GCSE biology to a levle and at least 6 out of her class have dropped it or have been encouraged to drop it within the first 3_4 weeks.

At DD's school you can, you only have to take one science as a compulsory subject, that's why I was getting a bit confused!

Is it a state school in England? I would double-check this as it is unlikely if so. The English national curriculum requires that all three sciences are covered in KS4, but they can be examined in either a single, combined or triple award (1, 2, or 3 GCSEs respectively).

No, NI.

No, NI.

Ah, the statutory requirements are completely different in NI. Ignore me!

Triple science if she’s very able and enjoys studying. It’s a LOT of work.

My daughter didn't do triple science GCSE and only took two science A levels plus Drama.

She is a newly qualified doctor now. Nobody cared when she applied. She had two offers. Finished in the top decile of her year.
