Not sure if this thread has been started but if not, I would like to share experiences, tips and generally talk about schools and their pros and cons and processes to ease the anxiety and pain for us parents :)

SPGS seemed to have much higher application numbers this year. They had c.60 for each session, three sessions a day (some thought possibly even four a day) over 5 days. That's somewhere between 900-1200 applicants. They did say in an email that they'd had an unusually high number of applicants this year. I'd been told previously by Admissions that they typically had around 800. Last year about 400 went through to the second round so it will be interesting to see if they take the same number through this year.

Ilikelists · 13/12/2023 17:50

@lolo99 @MrsEverdeen thanks for the tips. How much extra outside of school did you do every week?

PreplexJ · 13/12/2023 18:17

SPGS in the past years (1-3 years) definitely had much less than 800 applied (500-600 max) typically 3/4 to 80% to the second round for 400 people on site the same date. I would be very surprised if they have more than usual to apply this year.

Does anyone think G&L might do the same as PHS and give stage 1 outcome pre Xmas? Anxiously waiting for a gauge on DDs consortium test!

W4mamabear · 12/12/2023 17:36

Well done to your DC! It’s a wonderful school and my DHs first choice - it wasn’t meant to be for us but happy for all others getting through

Thank you. I really believe what is meant for you, will be. Well done on your stage 2 passes. Fantastic result for your DC.

Ignore me, I think I’ve asked this question before 😳

Westfieldrules · 13/12/2023 23:36

DH counted while waiting, and surmised that there are roughly 600 for the SPGS this year but not as many as 900 or even more than 1000 girls. It felt like being in a London grammar school test.

Thank you for responding. We did similar. Just lots of practise with papers that I felt were of a similar level to LU. @MrsEverdeen did you accept the LU offer? What other schools did you go for? I hope you don't mind me asking what you chose in the end and what swayed it.

I don't mind you asking at all - we're here to support each other, sharing information is part of that! :-)

My daughter applied to G&L, CLSG, NHEHS, FHRP, and LUS. She was really lucky and got offers from all. Her first choice before the offer holder days was CLSG and FHRP was a close second for her, while our first choice was LUS, with NHEHS a close second. The offer holder days got us all on the same page for LUS, no doubt with some subtle persuasion from us on CLSG v. LUS.

We'll see what happens this time around. Applied for LUS, SHHS, NHEHS, and FHSS this time.

@lolo99 @MrsEverdeen thanks for the tips. How much extra outside of school did you do every week?

With our older dd, we were totally clueless about the 11+ having moved to the country in August 2020 (mid-pandemic). We didn't know anything and didn't have the bandwidth to think about it. Our DD was mostly educated overseas, in a system that focuses a lot on reading comprehension, maths, and the NVR and VR stuff. Thus, take our experience with a grain of salt as coming from a different background.

From September 2021, for end of Nov 2021 pre-ISEB test at London Consortium, she did about 30-45 minutes of Atom 3-4 evenings a week. Her school allowed her to skip homework to do this. On the weekends she probably did about 60-90 minutes of Atom. About a week before the CLSG first round, she did some CEM practice tests and did terribly. I think the practice ones online must be much harder because she somehow made it through to the next stage!

Both LUS's first round and CLSG's second round were after the Christmas holidays that year. We did a lot of practice papers and worked on 'creative' writing. I relied HEAVILY on message boards and the internet to know what to do. She probably did 3-4 hours a week. She also met other kids at the exams and we did some practice sessions with them since she was the only one from her school applying out.

It was extremely stressful. We hired a tutor this time around, not because we worry about our younger DD's abilities but because being supported throughout it makes it so much less stressful. She started working on Atom tests fairly soon after our older one did, for the same reason. I was THRILLED the day I got to end that subscription. lol.

Good luck all.

Appreciate the information regarding CLSG. @Lolakath19 @Toolongawait24 @PreplexJ @MrsEverdeen

So you are now at LU? Is it possible to message you about it?
