Same question here

EandAdad · 04/05/2023 12:49

Same question, Do any of you have any experience in the previous year?

InternationalParents · 04/05/2023 16:01

Is this for the public or private school ? Believe there are 2 …

parent1709 · 04/05/2023 16:06

This is for the private school, 13+ entry starting 2025.

parent1709 · 13/05/2023 11:28

We are waiting list for a general place as we did not apply to a house. @yukkim and @EandAdad what House are you on the waiting list for?

EandAdad · 13/05/2023 11:32

My DS didn’t apply for any house yet.

Just a waiting list. They did not provide us a house place.

@yukkim did your child interview with a specific House, or did you interview for a General Place?

Peter97 · 14/05/2023 14:31

By waiting list, I am assuming you are referring to reserve list? If so, my understanding is that there is not much to be done (on WinColl’s end) and promotion to confirmed place will be informed if and when they become available. I don’t have the statistics on how many promotions vs waitlist but one of DS’s older friend got his waitlist place promoted in Y7. Would encourage you to not lose hope yet as Eton’s second tranche results were announced around 4-5 May and the last tranche hasnt been announced yet. On top of that, you also have boys preferring day schools and boys changing their minds. It is however probably worth keeping in touch with your DS’s current headmaster/relevant teacher.

parent1709 · 14/05/2023 16:29

Thanks @Peter97 sensible advice for us all. Yes, I meant Reserve List.
I wonder if WinColl runs a waiting "list" (list ranked in some way) or is it more of a waiting "group" (all boys ranked more or less the same, just depends on House, sibling, and Headmaster relationship, etc). They do mention a strong performance on the WinColl Exam can help (our DS is OK but not stellar at what is known to be a tough exam...but we are where we are)

Someone told me that the ref letter from headmaster is crucial.

That is a difficult one and one which I dont think anyone has an answer to, except the WinColl admissions. My own logic/guess would be that they would have a malleable order of preference, moving based on changes on the situation.

We have heard from another prestigious boarding school admissions explaining about their own waitlist - “it is a bit like building a sports team. We are trying to fill our school with various different characteristics, such that a blend is great. So if we lose a forward, we will likely replace him with another forward rather than the next qualified boy who happens to be a defender.”

Don’t know if WinColl thinks the same way but wouldn’t be surprised if it is the same.

Dose anyone know if the waiting list moves?

We haven't heard the news yet.

Like any other school, you should look up the commitment dates in the admission's calendar (deposits to be paid, contract to be signed, etc) as the waiting list is likely to move soon after those dates. I would email the registrar's office after those days, reiterating your commitment to Wincoll as your first choice of school and attaching you child's latest academic reports and co-curricular resumes / certificates.

Another way to tell if the frequency of negative comments about Wincoll during those weeks 😊I still remember visiting MN before taking the next step prescribed, and I was almost fooled by the sudden negativity coming from various sources... until I realised that the tiger mums are likely out in packs around those days, and for weeks thereafter!

There are also several scholarship routes in Y8 (academic, sport, music) which is an excellent way for a second try if your son happens to be a late boomer, as his performance on those days is the one and only thing that matters.

The most amazing thing about Wincoll is that even though these kids are really well selected and top performers both in school and outside, they still have a sort of cool, calm and collected demeanour about them. No anxiety and loads of camaraderie. Wincoll can take a lot of credit for this: boys are kept very busy from 8am until 9.30pm and while they are obviously in the 'zone' there is no feeling of being under pressure as it is all done in a 'flow'.

DS is in College and we are very happy with our choice.

Hello ~ Dose anyone know if the waiting list moves? Thanks

Managing2020 · 21/11/2023 22:53

It def does. You just have to be willing to wait until the summer term before entry.

EandAdad · 07/12/2023 05:32

We are also waiting and have not heard any news of any movement from those around us.
In fact, schools should call as soon as there are vacancies. So that children can be prepared and not be nervous. In addition, in order to be fair to other schools that are the next backup options as well.
For us, if the school called us after 2024, for many reasons discussed in our family, we would probably reject this place as well. to find a school that is more welcoming and suitable for us
However, for now we are still happy to hear news that there is movement on the reserve list. At least I know there's movement. Even if it's not us
(Sorry for my poor English. I am a foreigner)

DS had a place at Winchester and was on the waiting list at Eton. We were offered a place at Eton in the end of year 7 ( July) and we contacted Winchester to let them know. Another boy at our school did the same. I don't know how quickly Winchester offered their places. There were 3 boys in our prep school on the waiting list for Winchester, they were all offended a place. Only one took it up , the others has already settled on other schools. I think that this was the beginning of year 8

Good luck x

Villalobos · 07/12/2023 16:06

There will be movement in new year after bursary applications have been decided- there will be boys with offers but without bursaries who drop out to go elsewhere where they can command financial support. And there will be others that resign offers if they secure scholarships elsewhere- that's likely in Lent term Y8. And Eton will keep pulling boys in from their wait lists until the last moment, some of whom will have been holding Winchester offers. So quite a bit of movement. It's worth asking the Registrar if he thinks your DS is likely to be picked up- if you are flexible about which House you'll maximise his chances.

Hello, have you received any good news yet? Daffodil

smilingfaces10 · 27/04/2024 11:15

Hi! We have a waiting place at Eton and am curious for any tips to firm it up and if ever there is movement before or ahead of taking the test again in year 7?

Katenet · 04/05/2024 15:59

What exam will you take in Y7?

EandAdad · 03/04/2025 06:42

My DS just got his place this month . He is very happy and hopes to see you as well on the school opening day this September.
Wishing everyone a great day!😊
