FFS prom dresses. How much are you paying?

It appears I should think upward of £300. Dd said "you'd think I'd want something quirky but I don't ".
We never had this bollocks in the 1980s when I was her age. School leavers disco.

We live just outside East Manchester. Nothing fancy. But all the effing shops seem stupid prices.

So what's your budget?

I’m not getting all this. I have a DD in “prom” year. I’m sure they will all wear their nicest outfits on the day but nothing has been said or mentioned about buying something specially, getting hair or make up done, spending anything. Getting dresses altered or wearing false eyelashes! DD would cringe herself inside out at the idea.

Lol at cringe herself inside out

It would be very uncool to make a massive effort at dds school tbh. It depends on the school i guess

I'm totally refusing to buy any until I know if she's going, so it'll be something cheap from the high Street. Bloody school has set an attendance level to be allowed to go to prom

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 13/01/2023 10:00

People spend crazy money on prom dresses. DD's was £65 from TKMaxx and absolutely gorgeous. Never been worn since but she doesn't want to sell it, which is more palatable when you've paid £65 and not hundreds .

Beamur · 13/01/2023 10:02

I think DD and her friends will be going for nice dresses rather than expensive prom dresses. She's seen one she likes in Phase 8. I doubt there will be vast amounts spent on hair/nails etc either..

mondaytosunday · 13/01/2023 10:12

We also got the prom dress at JJs house and paid about £100, plus £20 to local seamstress for hemming. Vast collection she's sure to find something she likes!

Personally, I think it’s an unfortunate trend to spend on hair, nails, make-up, tan, transport etc etc as well as the dress. There are always going to be shoes too.

The trouble is, these threads show that the big long list of stuff has become the norm. And when people read this thread, they feel they are letting down their daughter if they don’t provide it all. There’s a bloody cost of living crisis going on, but people are still looking at dresses over £100 and then lots and lots of costly add-ons. I can only agree with a PP that it’s all quite obscene.

I will say too, and it might not be popular, that often it can be families least able to really afford it, that find it so important to splash out on all this stuff. Somehow, having second hand or a cheaper dress would feel like a defeat, and so a big splash of visible cash, for the one night, feels important to the girls and perhaps the families. To hear about people spending some of their inheritance on this, or the government child trust fund money, makes me feel quite shocked. These are 16 year olds having their end of term disco essentially. It really isn’t the huge big deal some seem to want it to be and lots find it’s a real anti-climax and other stuff they do is much more fun.

But the trouble is, it’s out there and the norm now and for lots of girls and families, it feels impossible to resist or get any sense of balance on.

So, all I can say is that I hope no-one on this thread sounds more than they can afford or sacrifices more important stuff for this one-night end of term party. And I hope they all have a lovely time.

So people are spending silly money on prom dresses whilst others go to food banks ? What a crazy world we have! Obviously no cost of living crisis where you live @bellinisurge

My DDs went to school balls in y13. They weee at independent school and we didn’t pay silly money. In fact hardly anyone did even if they could. It’s the difference between class and cringe. So say no. It’s easy in the sales to find something for £50. Just because others do it, don’t join it. Don’t teach dd to be a lemming!

On another point- this is another stupid American import. When DD was at primary school, some dds turned up in a limo. Just ott stupidity but you have to laugh at them!

@WombatChocolate very well put.

Bayleaf25 · 13/01/2023 15:15

We paid £100 from local wedding dress shop that also did prom dresses. £20 for alterations. £25 for shoes. The dress is a classic style so I’m hoping she’ll wear again or we’ll sell it on.
