How often do you wash school blazer?

As the title reads, how often do you wash dc school blazer?
I was going to wash every week but wondering if that's too much (don't want it to start looking a little worn out too quickly). It is good old polyester though (had a choice between polyester and wool, washing and drying was one of the reasons went with polyester and the fact the wool blazer cost an arm and a leg)

Year 10dd's every Friday, she swears, it stinks.

Year 8 D's, about once a month, he's not sweaty or smelly yet.

Ducksurprise · 11/09/2022 15:47

Uggh, if polyester at least once a week, they sit in it for six hours a day with only a thin shirt in between, I agree you can smell those that are not washed, or that are masked by febreeze.

GiantTortoise · 11/09/2022 15:47

Dry clean once a term. They don't seem too stinky!

Gazelda · 11/09/2022 15:58

Every half term unless a spill or mark needs dealing with.

She is always fresh, smart and well presented.

Lindy2 · 11/09/2022 16:06

Every half term.

They are "aired" regularly though. I hang them outside for an hour or so several times a week which seems to help freshen them up.

They cost over £50. I try to balance cleanliness with the blazers lasting at least a full school year.

MintJulia · 11/09/2022 16:07

Never. It's made of wool. I sponge individual marks off and have it dry cleaned if absolutely necessary.

When i feel it needs it - febreeze weekly.

Bleugh. Don't make your poor kid be the Febreeze kid. That's worse than BO

easylikeasundaymorning · 11/09/2022 16:31

Every week here. The dcs have to keep them on pretty much all day every day so it's not like a coat and being that close to armpits it feels like the right amount to wash it.

MintyChipton · 11/09/2022 16:40

My DC's are crappy polyester. I bought two and plan on washing one every week.
With older DC who wore the same the blazer was only introduced in yr 11 so I bought one (reluctantly) and washed it twice a week. It looked dreadful by the end of the year.
I hate school uniform!

Petrarkanian · 11/09/2022 16:42

Every holiday

RainPlease · 11/09/2022 17:02

End of the first week here and it definitely had a whiff around the armpits so I washed it. It's a washable polyester one and they are worn all day. And I'm not a frequent washer of things that don't need it.

Milliemoo1908 · 11/09/2022 17:06

every Friday along with the tie

WombatChocolate · 11/09/2022 17:11

For teens who sweat, rub some washing liquid or white vinegar into the armpits of blazer and wash inside out. Do the same with their shirts or blouses.

Yes, they sit in them for 6-7 hours per day and often refuse to remove them even if allowed, as they fear being smelly and others knowing. Some come home and spend the evening sweating into their blazers too. Hormones makes them sweaty. The blazers are polyester so they can washed regularly. I’ve known people wash them every 2 days. Definitely worth having a sniff….you wouldn’t want to leave them being stinky for 6 weeks or a whole term would you!

Phillipa12 · 11/09/2022 17:13

My ds has been wearing the same blazer since year 7, he's now in year 9. It gets washed twice a week without fail as it gets quite smelly. It's 100% polyester and has never lost its shape or faded.

Cazs818 · 11/09/2022 17:27

Weekly on a hand wash , summer time they get washed twice a week

SweetsAndChocolates · 11/09/2022 22:30

Thank you all, a mixture of replies.

I have washed it after first week back 😳 but they had sports and no one uses the showers (just a wipe down/roll on- teacher has told them no one uses showers, and after rugby just wash arms and legs 🤷🏽‍♀️) then back into uniform (I found it a bit ick to leave like that over weekend).

However, they're not cheap so I might go with, wash when it needs (will be doing smell test from now on 😂) need the dang thing to last a while.

Every month, it dries surprisingly quickly. DD doesn't get smelly tbh, she's more likely to spill food on it.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 11/09/2022 22:39

Every couple of weeks until they get older and sweaty then weekly. Can't believe some people leave them so long or don't wash them at all!

MrsTeaShore · 11/09/2022 23:12

Once a week , inside out, on a really delicate wash cycle. Current blazer has lasted 2 years already !

Dixiechickonhols · 12/09/2022 19:13

Every half term and end of term so every 6 weeks ish.

MarchingFrogs · 13/09/2022 10:46

When otherwise necessary (DS1 managed to get himself a head injury once, minor but bled quite a lot, and getting that sorted out overnight, blazer-wise, was interesting; DS2 came home one day with most of someone else's lunch on his - tipped tray in till queue incident), or half-termly.

I look after the secondhand uniform for a local school and always bring blazers home to wash. I was once assured that a particular donation had been dry-cleaned, was slightly suspicious, started to wash it by hand as I had nothing else to going in the machine at the time - and at first dip, the water started turning brown... I often suspect that blazers bought new for sixth form never get washed once in the two years before they come my way at the end of year 13.

When DD changed schools a week before the end of year 7, her new blazer was one of those 'eco' ones with more warnings about how you could completely ruin it othen actual washing instructions. (You know the ones - it will turn back into a pile of old plastic bottles if you even leave it in the same room as an iron etcShock). I freaked and took it to the dry cleaners, only to be told, If it says washable, we wash it. It survived.

Joystir59 · 13/09/2022 10:54

I eat the sixth form in1976. I had one blazer throughout senior school, which was way too big for me when I was 11. I'm pretty sure it was NEVER washed or dry cleaned!

Joystir59 · 13/09/2022 10:54

Left not eat!

Goldieshock · 13/09/2022 11:02

Once mid week and then at weekends
The smell is awful against the polyester

I turn it inside out, douse the pits with vinegar, hang for a bit, then wash with dettol laundry- it's the only way to get it to come out smelling clean

BigWoollyJumpers · 13/09/2022 11:07

I actually think the wool ones are better value for money. They don't get stinky because wool breathes. You only need to dry clean them yearly (well I did anyway). They last for years and years, and then you can sell them on second hand, or buy them second hand, and then re-sell. Bargain!
