Do yr 7s scoot to school?

Just that, really.
My ds wants to ride his bike, but it's far too small, we can't afford a new one and his road awareness isn't yet good enough.
I was thinking that he could scoot instead, but I don't want him to be unusual if others don't.

Some do where i live although it is only Yr 7 students i see.

OutDamnedSpot · 29/08/2022 10:10

I’ve worked in secondary schools for 20 years and never seen a child scoot to school. We do have one teacher who does… Hmm

DoThePropeller · 29/08/2022 10:11

Not around here.

PeterPomegranate · 29/08/2022 10:12

I haven’t seen Y7s scoot. Can he walk?

Grumpybutfunny · 29/08/2022 10:12

It's mainly bike or walk around here. Local school has just banned electric scooters!

Freedomfighters · 29/08/2022 10:12

Mine has done on occasion. I think hes the only one who does. He does have a speedy adult scooter which helps the image a bit.

toomuchlaundry · 29/08/2022 10:13

Will he have any mates to walk with?

Sarahcoggles · 29/08/2022 10:14

Mine wouldn't have. Scooters were seen as too childish when they were in year 7

Hellocatshome · 29/08/2022 10:21

Not round here. Also it will be at risk of getting stolen. Lots of bikes go missing at the local schools even though they are chained up. Best off just walking that way he is more likely to make friends as well as they can chat as they walk.

Porcupineintherough · 29/08/2022 10:29

No, at least not round here. I suggested it to my (then) rising Y7 as he'd scooted to primary in Y4-Y6 and was roundly withered.

TokyoSushi · 29/08/2022 10:31

No scoring here either

TokyoSushi · 29/08/2022 10:31

Scooting!!

MissingNashville · 29/08/2022 10:41

Definitely no scooters here, they’re not cool. Quite a lot used to use bikes but less since the school insisted that anyone using a bike had to wear a helmet. Helmets aren’t cool either. 🙄 A lot of teenagers are ridiculous.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 29/08/2022 10:49

Lots of ours scoot to school, we are in a more deprived area so perhaps they dont have bikes or maybe scooters are just easier to store and access in smaller homes to bring to school. Why not leave it a week and see what is the norm at your Dss school?

LondonQueen · 29/08/2022 10:52

More of a primary school thing to scoot. If he is comfortable with is though I'd let him, maybe it will catch on with others?

yikesanotherbooboo · 29/08/2022 11:00

Quite a few do around us, more on bikes though.

abovedecknotbelow · 29/08/2022 11:01

Definitely not!!

Dts are starting y7 and I don't know if this is normal but they are not allowed to cycle unless they have their cycle proficiency certificate from the council.

Can he walk or take a bus?

hedgehogFC · 29/08/2022 11:02

I've never seen any of the hundreds of kids streaming to our local schools riding scooters, sorry OP!
Do you have a local FB selling group? I ask as I picked up a bike for a tenner for my DC and £50 for me so you might be able to pick up a very cheap bike if you're lucky.

clary · 29/08/2022 11:41

Never seen anyone scouting and we live v near school. How far is it? 30 mins is fine to walk at age 11 assuming no extra needs.

Or Yy secondhand bike - sell for £40-50 round my way.

sheepdogdelight · 29/08/2022 11:54

Not unless it's an electric scooter (they are cool).

I suspect your average secondary school doesn't have a secure space to store scooters during the day.

Cool and illegal

I suspect the illegal is why it's cool :)

(it wasn't meant to be a serious suggestion for OP).

bringbackveronicamars · 29/08/2022 12:22

Can you ask on your local fb pages if anyone has a bigger bike available cheap? Often there will be free/cheap ones locally that just need some work.

birdling · 29/08/2022 12:40

Thanks everyone. He'll just have to walk for now. We have a bigger bike lined up for him, but it's just still too big and doesn't solve the road awareness issue.
He has done bike ability, but he is often completely in his own world whilst cycling, so we aren't happy about doing it alone.
Unfortunately he has no friends to walk with.

Get a bigger bike in a charity shop. They always have some for £10 or 20. I've seen loads recently.
