Thread for the parents of DC sitting their GCSEs in about 4 weeks time - eek.

Definitely no point in trying to work out outcome - DCs could either have a false sense of attainment or failure, & there is subjectivity particularly with subjects like English, plus the unknown of grade boundaries.

So sorry to read of DCs who are ill or have panicked, the best advice as others have said is to contact the school.

DS was happy with Eng Lit, tentatively even the dreaded unseen poetry which 'could have been worse'. He's revised history this afternoon plus had a school revision session on Physics...a heavy day tomorrow...

Rollergirl11 · 08/06/2022 17:35

DD is dreading Physics. It’s her worst of all the Science subjects.

shazshaz · 08/06/2022 17:41

@andwhy - hopefully your DD has been checked by the GP now, it sounds like it could be tonsillitis which got my DD the week before ½ term and she wound up missing 2 exams. Its so frustrating and worrying when this happens.

DD had 3 hours of history today at school so at least she doesn't need to think about it now until tomorrow! The important one for her is Physics tomorrow, because the mark she gets in this will count toward one of her missed exams.

Lightsabre · 08/06/2022 19:56

Does anyone know whether dc get their marks/percentages with the exam slip or is it just the grade?

I think it's just the grade.

legosnowqueen · 08/06/2022 20:06

@Lightsabre @Womblesaremyfavouritefood it's an interesting point as I know sometimes students have asked for papers to be re-marked if they've done less well than expected...but presumably this is based on instinct & past performance rather than the knowledge that you were only a couple of marks away from a better grade?

They'll see exactly how many marks out of the total paper as well as the grade this translates to.

whenwillthemadnessend · 08/06/2022 20:50

Dd now done more exams than she has left so that's a nice feeling. We are on the downward spiral at last.
Said English lit went ok. Got a few quotes in and seemed quite happy with how it went.

CornishGem1975 · 08/06/2022 21:09

From AQA but I assume they are all similar. I guess if you're really unhappy you could ask for the copy of the marked paper and then if it's just a few marks off you could ask for it be remarked...

Post-results services

If you're unhappy about an exam result, you can ask us for a clerical re-check or review of marking ('reviews of results'), or we can send you the marked paper ('access to scripts').
What’s available

  1. If the student has a university place pending, we advise that you request a priority review of marking (summer series only).
  2. If the student doesn’t have a university place pending, you can request a:
  1. priority copy of the marked paper to decide if you want a clerical re-check or review of marking
  2. clerical re-check for an individual student or a whole class
  3. review of marking
  4. moderation review for controlled assessment or coursework in a whole subject.

You’ll receive a copy of the reviewed script with a review of marking as part of the service, there is no charge for this.

If you’re not planning a clerical re-check, review of marking or appeal, you can also ask us to send you an original marked paper to support teaching and learning.

legosnowqueen · 08/06/2022 22:44

@CornishGem1975 thanks for that...no one wants to be 'that parent' but I guess if a result isn't good enough for the next steps & it's unexpected, one might consider it...

OddGoingsOn · 08/06/2022 22:46

DS hates EngLit-it just means nothing to him at all. He (and I!) have worked so hard on Macbeth and left school happy today, even with the unseen poetry. He sent me a text asking could he please go to the gym for a couple of hours with a friend then come back and revise more for tomorrow’s physics. Of course that was fine-destressing with a mate and chatting about how the exam went. He then called me at 4-his bike has been stolen from the gym. In a bike shed, locked with 2 locks, both locks cut off. He’s devastated. It’s the 3rd time he’s had a bike stolen and each time he’s more careful with it. He’s been working so hard for these exams but struggled to concentrate on any revision tonight. I know there are worse things but I’m just so sad and cross for him.

CornishGem1975 · 08/06/2022 22:50

Fucksake @OddGoingsOn that's the last thing he needs. People are complete arses. Hope he can pick himself up and regain his focus.

@legosnowqueen The process is put in place for a reason...

They'll see exactly how many marks out of the total paper as well as the grade this translates to.

That was our experience with DS, who did his GCSEs in 2019. He got his marks in all subjects as well as the grades, but only the grades went on the actual certificates.

Come to think of it, we didn't get the same for A Levels. Of course he did A levels in Covid, so it was TAGs, but I don't remember getting any marks, just grades (except for the EPQ, where he did get a mark). Wonder if that was because it was TAGs.

legosnowqueen · 08/06/2022 22:58

@OddGoingsOn that is so upsetting, poor lad...such terrible timing. Hope he can put it out of his mind for the next few days.

Silkierabbit · 08/06/2022 23:00

Sorry your DS bike was stolen Odd

English Lit here today, eduqas all poetry and there's 18 poems to learn. Last night we were talking and I said to DD Dulce et Decorum Est is the one I had to do at school and DD said she had not learned that one so I went through it and lucky we did as it was the compulsory poem.

Bit of a nightmare with DS though, school reckoned he never was at school all day, think he was in hiding, he is asd and its enrichment week and they called police out to look for him. Left for school at normal time and arrived back at normal time so think he was there though I was half dead on my chemo and feeling sick as I forgot to take my anti-sickness.

NameInUseAlreadyAgain · 08/06/2022 23:06

Don’t worry DS didn’t revise that ‘theme’ …..! No idea what he wrote !

LizzyButtons · 08/06/2022 23:20

Hello, just joined the thread as I'm currently going through the GCSE stress with my DS. I'm exhausted trying to keep him motivated! Physics tomorrow. He's revised a bit tonight but find myself having to constantly try and keep the momentum going. I'm on my own a bit with it as I have health issues so I was glad to find this thread although I'm late. DS seemed to think he did ok with Romeo and Juliet earlier. I have found the whole situation along with the covid disruption really stressful and for this year 11 quite unfair on them really.

Stormchaser1502 · 09/06/2022 06:25

Odd - so sorry to hear about ds’s bike, that’s awful for him!

for the PP who’s dd had panic attack..my daughter did in one of her mocks (thankfully a mock) and therefore doesn’t sit exams in the exam hall anymore. She sits in a side room and is able to have rest breaks when she feels as if her panic is rising.
I’m not sure if too late but is this something you can get for your dd for her forthcoming exams??

dd found English Lit to be one of her best yet. Physics tomorrow..she seemed ok with it until she sat a past paper online last night, and felt she flunked it!!

DFOD · 09/06/2022 06:38

Another heavy day today History and Physics and then Chemistry tomorrow.

FFF2022 · 09/06/2022 06:43

I think 4 exams in two days means mine are starting to flag. Physics today thankfully in the afternoon as they will need to revise a lot this morning. English Lit was ok but both found RE hard (one thinks he failed but hasn’t revised at all).
These year 11s have had a tough time (Year 8 was their last normal school year) and no mean feat to sit 24 exams in 6 weeks.
Good luck to everyone’s DC today.

LouisCatorze · 09/06/2022 06:52

Sorry to hear that you felt so poorly @Silkierabbit . Hope you feel better today.

DD is wilting before my eyes. She was so tired yesterday. Probably put in about two hours physics revision so really hoping she's going to crack on with it this morning. I have a feeling I may be roped in to help I know nothing about the subject.

The weekend can't fast enough, can it?

CornishGem1975 · 09/06/2022 07:13

DD is glad of an afternoon exam today as it's given more time for revision. Will be interesting to see what she thinks after as she hates physics but needs to do okay so not to bring the rest of her science grade down. Good luck everyone!

Rollergirl11 · 09/06/2022 08:05

Good luck all. History and Physics today. DD is snapping at everyone so she’s obviously mega stressed. 😬🥺

Fizbosshoes · 09/06/2022 09:13

It seems to be a commonly disliked subject. This was one of the pros of triple science for DD as physics is her weakest subject. She doesn't like science generally but feels she has a reasonable grasp of the other 2. (I was the same , when I was at school, I can't even begin to help with physics revision or homework.....not that I'm a great deal of help with any subjects tbh!😂)

MirandaWest · 09/06/2022 09:15

Both DD and DS have exams this morning. DS was still in bed at 8 whereas DD had been up about an hour. DH took them along about 8:15. Not sure DDs nerves do well when DS is being that chilled.
