How much revision is your Y11 doing now?

Having the usual debate with DS who tells me that no one at school is even thinking about revision before the Easter hols Hmm

Could you give me an idea how much your kids are doing? Mocks went ok but could have been better. DS is clever but can be lazy.

My DD is doing about 2 hours a day at the weekend, and about 1.5 hours in the evenings after school along with going to a few drop-in sessions at school. I do have to nag her though.

My DS will do shit all next year.

Thank you x

Very little, dusted her pile of revision guides that i bought before Christmas only last week. Does attend the after school sessions so about 2-3 hours per week.

catchingzzzeds · 27/02/2022 15:31

School told us to let them have half term off because it will be full on when they return

RedskyThisNight · 27/02/2022 16:02

DD has just had (second set of) mocks so she was revising a fair bit over half term. I think she will probably take her foot of the pedal for a couple of weeks before picking it up again. They've finished the syllabus for virtually every subject so schools lesons and homework are mostly revision anyway, but I'd expect her to settle to a couple of hours a night of work (mix of homework/revision).

jytdtysrht · 27/02/2022 16:05

My ds was told to work in half term. He did well in mocks, however there are more teacher assessed grade things coming up before the end of this term (just in case apparently). I am pretty angry tbh as they had to work over christmas for mocks, over half term now for more stuff and then easter will be revision. Y11 have been shat on.

CornishGem1975 · 27/02/2022 17:11

Yes we've got another set of TAGS and another set of Mocks in March. It feels excessive.

TattiePants · 27/02/2022 19:42

DS has been doing 3-4 hours / subjects a day over half term but he still has 4 days of mocks left when he goes back to school tomorrow. After next week he'll probably have a couple of easier weeks then go back to a couple of hours on a night and a bit more on a weekend.

crazycrofter · 28/02/2022 08:37

Ds has just gone back today after half term last week. He did no revision in half term. I've told him he will need to do his Seneca for Science as of tomorrow (aiming for an hour a day ) and I'm bribing him to get through this! Other than that, I doubt he'll do much until Easter. He's not that studious... and very last minute.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/02/2022 08:40

Mine seems to have had permanent exams. Some revision, but not loads.

Completely neglected art, hasn’t done it for ages🤷🏼‍♀️

Imsittinginthekitchensink · 28/02/2022 08:41

DD did a lot last week (half term) but I'm not convinced of the quality of her revision. Mocks did not go well despite revising and she is beside herself now as she is looking at a full complement of resits.

pisspants · 28/02/2022 08:44

my dd is probably averaging about 1.5 to 2 hours a day, with some days doing loads and other days doing nothing but then she doesnt relax as just feels guilty. She's on her 3rd lot of mocks and is still one lot to go. I think it's too much and worry she'll be burnt out by the time the real exams happen.

Dragongirl10 · 28/02/2022 08:45

DD does about 1.5 hours evenings and 4 hours at weekends, but has a long school day ...Its been like this since September..

BluerThanRobinsEggs · 28/02/2022 08:50

More mocks coming up so at least an hour on weekdays (plus homework) and I'd say 3 each day last weekend.

DS1 didn't do any until about the week before and I'd put money on DS3 following in his footsteps so I'm enjoying this.

Gabbiadini · 28/02/2022 08:54

Zero revision in half term. Hopefully will start again soon.

noblegiraffe · 28/02/2022 09:01

I’m hoping my Y11s have completed the past paper I set them over half term. I’ve been setting them weekly revision homeworks. Quite a few of the class are doing independent revision on top of this and have been since Christmas, working through revision guides and using online resources. Some are self-motivated, others are being organised by their parents (with bribery involved in some cases). A few have got tutors.
This is a middling group aiming for grade 4/5/6 in maths.

CatsLikeBoxes · 28/02/2022 09:04

It varies. They've been having after school revision til nearly 5 so she's usually attended that. They've even had Saturday morning revision classes and in half term too. She's got her 2nd set of mocks at the moment so has been doing extra revision. She still has plenty of free time though.

Art will be finished at our school by Easter. There's not a lot to do at home though is there? My DD has enough time at school to complete her required cousework.
ChnandlerBong · 28/02/2022 12:51

DD not doing an revision at the mo - she revised hard for her mocks in Jan and did well.

She gets homework - some of which may be revision -but am glad she's not routinely doing hours on top of that. The Easter holidays and the 3 weeks in school before the actual exams will be plenty.

Diditreallylookawful · 28/02/2022 13:47

Mocks are traditionally used to show not only what went well, but also what needed improvement. Don't lose heart - do you have a Head of Academics (or similar) that can help her tweak her revision techniques. If she's worked hard at revising already, the core information will already be there in her head. Sometimes it's exam technique, rather than actual learning, that needs some help.

My own DD started a week ago. We know that her first paper is 11 weeks today. She seems to have set herself 2 subjects a day, and then 5 each weekend day. Don't know how long that will last ...

FunnysInLaJardin · 28/02/2022 13:58

Nowt, none at all.

Mind you he has already sat 4 GCSE's of which he has passed 2 so far.

Two subjects are assessment only and the other two are exams in May.

He does go to any after school classes if required to do so, but I have never seen him revise at home, and suspect he just hopes for the best.....

JemimaMuddledUp · 28/02/2022 19:05

DD is doing around 2hrs a day. Her choice - she wants to get started early and has drawn up a weekly timetable that allocates time for homework, revision, sports and meeting up with friends.

She had mocks in December and a couple of proper exams in January and has just kept up the momentum.

She is DC3. DS1 is so laid back he'd have probably left it to cram the night before given the opportunity. DS2 had started to think about revising in the March of Y11 but then Covid hit and wiped out all of his plans anyway. Both of them did fine in their GCSEs, DS1 is now at university and DS2 is sitting his A levels this year. So there isn't necessarily one best way of approaching revision.

RocketFire7 · 28/02/2022 19:44

The expectation from DS2’s school is 3 hours of homework and revision on school nights and 4 hours a day at weekends (which he is doing).

They say this should increase to 4 hours on school nights and 6 hours a day at weekends over the next few weeks, with 8-9 hours a day during Easter.

It’s a school with high expectations but it does seem to pay off in results (it certainly did for DS1). Tbh a bit of hard work won’t hurt.

We as parents have to sign diaries to say that the recommended amount of revision has been completed.

zighead · 28/02/2022 22:15

My DS did barely a thing over half term but since going back has been doing approximately two thirty minute sessions per evening. I think he needs to ramp it up at the weekend though.

Wowwellokthen · 28/02/2022 22:25

Erm nothing I think. DS is at boarding school so I've no idea. He didn't do any in half term. Xmas holidays he did some and had mocks in Jan...results very average. Hopefully, he is doing more than I realise...but I won't hold my breath! Hmm
