How much revision is your Y11 doing now?

Having the usual debate with DS who tells me that no one at school is even thinking about revision before the Easter hols Hmm

Could you give me an idea how much your kids are doing? Mocks went ok but could have been better. DS is clever but can be lazy.

@Wowwellokthen we are in the same boat. My DS's mocks were very average at best. DS says that he's working now but we've heard that before. I'm disappointed that they get away with doing so little. It wasn't what I was expecting from boarding school to say the least 😟

Not a lot. Or none is probably more accurate. I keep trying remind him that if he fails he’ll have to repeat so a little work now will save a resit year.

Ds2 has mocks this week so he did revise over half term. School also set tasks to complete which they can monitor online due to the system ie Hegarty Maths.

Ds is very high achieving and he wants amazing grades. He is motivated even for English lit which he detests but I help him with that and he comes to it willingly. It is frustrating for him when all his other subjects come very easily to him.

He will be doing revision on evenings but for some subjects it is just keeping them ticking over, more sitting papers compiled by school than revision, more applying the knowledge as a way to test himself.

Easter will see him full throttle.

@Imsittinginthekitchensink the most important thing your DD can do right now is not panic. She has time. The best advice I can give is to make sure you see the mock papers she sat. Hopefully school will either go over the papers in class and they then insert or expand their answers to what the mark scheme wants or school may provide you with the mark scheme. Armed with this knowledge she can see where she can gain more marks the next time that question is asked.

There are 2 prongs to revision, one learning the facts, and two applying that knowledge. ie for science, identify why she didn't get full marks for the question, was it a maths error? Or she knew the content but couldn't apply it? Did she read the question properly? Was it bad communication? Did she make enough points ie if it is a 4 marker did she make only 2 points? If you can see a pattern you can help her address it.

I will tell you that Ds1 at this stage was a consistent 6 in History, knew all the facts of what happened but was not great at essay writing. His teacher said he'll probably get a 7 in the exams. I went with Ds to see his teacher so he could tell me how to help my child. He was great, laid it out for me and Ds. Ds worked on it, could see results in class and got a 9 in the end.

Mocks are a great way to identify where they need to work.

It seems extraordinary that boarding schools are not ensuring that DC are revising!

My DC are all at/have attended a grammar and they have had lots of homework and study from year 7 and the school have been hot on ensuring it is done.

All years have a set amount of study that has to be completed each night and weekend. We as parents have to sign homework diaries to say that this amount to be completed and DC have to do private study/revision if they don’t have enough homework to meet this amount.

From March 1st, DS2 in year 11 has to do 3 hours on school nights and 6 hours a day at weekends. He can be asked to demonstrate what work has been completed during this time.

The school, parents and DC all understand that these few months in the run up to exams are important and that the majority of time should be spent studying.

@RocketFire7 They are supposed to put in the hours but my son obviously hasn't done that.. As one of the top schools we expected better but it's looking a little late now. I.am feeling very stressed about the situation but not expecting much sympathy. I feel many will enjoy our failure because of the school he attends but we will get though it I'm sure.

About an hour a day I'd say, including after school revision sessions and revision type homework. My feeling is he needs to step it up a bit.

@Porcupineintherough

I’d definitely be encouraging/ making him step it up. The DCs’ school have said that all DC should be working as hard as they can now so there’ll be no regrets come results day.
