Should I let my child listen to music whilst doing revision?

My girl is 15. Her mocks are coming up in November so she's currently trying her hardest to revise. I found her listening to music whilst revising so I took it off her so she could concentrate. About 15 minutes later she came into the living room looking really deflated and she explained how listening to music makes her want to do her revision and it makes it enjoyable. I took it off her because I wanted her to focus but she's telling me that she can't and she feels really unmotivated to carry on studying. What should I do? Should I let her listen to music which makes her actually want to do revision or was I right by taking it away from her to help her focus but makes revision a chore and makes her hate it?

Not sure why you’re micro managing her revision. Leave her be. I listened to music and still do when working!

LastStarfighter · 14/10/2021 18:21

Let her listen to music (and stop being so controlling).

You can even get specially formulated playlists that are supposed to improve focus.

I have one particular playlist that I use for work when I really need to knuckle down and get stuff done.

There's channels of lo-fi instrumental hip-hop on Youtube that are aimed at being music to study to.

I know music can help some people concentrate as long as it’s something like jazz or chill.

I’d let her listen to music for the moment if she can show she’s revising hard! Tell her you’ll review it after her mocks and if her grades aren’t up to scratch, the music goes as it’s clearly not helping.

Porfre · 14/10/2021 20:18

I always listened to music.
Had my.own revision tape.

Listening to the same songs, over and over. It helped block everything else out, and just became background noise. You dont really hear the music anymore because you've heard each song so many times.

Even now when I hear the same music I'm brought back to that time sat in my room revising

Parker231 · 14/10/2021 20:31

Why micromanage - if she wants music on let her. I’m working from home and had Meat Loaf on today. Didn’t stop me working

CurlsandCurves · 14/10/2021 20:37

You said yourself she’s trying her hardest to revise.

She said music really helps her to revise.

So why on earth would you take it away?

For what it’s worth I needed absolute silence to revise, but that’s me. Everyone learns in different ways.

Arrowheart · 14/10/2021 20:39

Everyone works differently. How would you like it OP if you worked better with background noise and someone came and took it away and made you work in silence? You sound way too controlling.

wheresmyshoe · 14/10/2021 20:45

Music can help revision enormously, it's a well known technique. It will help her to stop her mind wandering and keep intrusive thoughts out that will break her concentration. When I need to access deep thought I use music to occupy the busy/trivial part of my brain and it has an extraordinary effect on my ability to concentrate and allow complex understanding to happen.

HotSauceCommittee · 14/10/2021 20:48

You are far too strict. You need to lighten up.

dootball · 14/10/2021 20:53

OP I think you are right. I thought all the evidence in favour of revising with music was discredited? The only was it can help is if you are listening to it on some level, in which case you cannot be using your full facilities for actually revising?
However it may help with motivation.

Steelesauce · 14/10/2021 20:53

Even surgeons have music on while they work! Let her have the music.

hauntedvagina · 14/10/2021 20:55

I cannot work in silence. I bang out box set after box set working from home, can't imagine not having the TV on in the background!!

FindingMeno · 14/10/2021 20:57

She's 15 and revising. You should be rejoicing!
She needs to be left to what works for her.

OverweightPidgeon · 14/10/2021 21:02

Don’t be so mean Op , she’s revising - leave her to do it however she wants.

Lollypop701 · 14/10/2021 21:13

You and greenlakes need to get together and work out further methods on child control… because god forbid you would just support your child’s self motivated learning

whiteroseredrose · 14/10/2021 21:20

Both of my DC had music on when revising and it worked for them.

I need quiet, but obviously they don't.

It doesn’t matter what evidence you may or my not have heard about.

All that matters is that the OP’s DD has said she finds it helps her revise. No one else’s opinion is relevant.

LynetteScavo · 14/10/2021 21:30

It's perfectly possible to listen to music ans revise.

Revising in silence is dull as ditchwater, and she probably won't want to do much.

She's not watching TV or texting her mates or surfing the web. all things my DD would try to do while "revising"

GreenLakes · 14/10/2021 21:36

@LynetteScavo

Tbh she shouldn’t have a choice about whether to do as much.

The op should have clear expectations in place about the amount of revision to be completed, with consequences if this doesn’t happen.

specialsauce · 14/10/2021 21:40

Yes music helps the brain to absorb and retain information as it is stimulating. I listened to music throughout my A level and degree revision and during all essay and dissertation writing. Music is good for the brain!!

honeylemonteaforme · 14/10/2021 21:43

The point is you need to listen to your daughter to find out whether she concentrates better with or without music. How can anyone but her possibly know!

Meh
I let my dd study as much or as little as she wanted. She got good grades without me micro managing or needing to give consequences.

honeylemonteaforme · 14/10/2021 21:45

Also revision music doesn't have to lo fi etc I listen to nirvana

Notaroadrunner · 14/10/2021 21:46

My older kids listen to music and manage to do well at school so there must be something in it. While I can't understand it as I know I'd end up singing along, it seems to work well for them. I'd leave your dd to it.
