Gcse 2021 anyone appealing?

Dc has had a rubbish year, getting covid and being off school for ages (like many others). He's just got his results and is pleased but 2 of his grades are lower than his tracked grades and may mocks. He wants to appeal but I said it'll be impossible to appeal this year as teachers will have followed the protocols very carefully and there's less margins for error. Is anyone appealing this year and if so what do you think your chances are?

Just thought I should update and say we successfully appealed on the grounds of procedural error. DD's school admitted that mitigating circumstances should have been granted not rejected and she was also assessed on content that she had not been taught meaning alternative evidence should have been submitted.

Anyother · 12/09/2021 09:55

I'm so glad to hear that, Azpie. Wishing your daughter a better year this year 💐💐

@AzPie congratulations

Still waiting to hear about ours. OCR decided it wasn't a priority for some reason. Seems like another thing against us!

We were on time and it would have made the difference for a place

Thanks @Anyother unfortunately though we are now battling the monumental school-based trauma and resulting anxiety she has because of her time at secondary school. I have no idea what's happening with her college place. She had to enrol on courses she has no interest in because of the lower grades initially awarded, she's now met the requirements for her conditional offer so not sure what happens next. The SenCo freaked out on DD's first day (due to DD's reaction to certain triggers) and wanted her to leave and "get some intensive therapy". Thankfully she has an EHCP and her caseworker is trying to sort things out but as of right now I don't even know what she's going to be studying or when she's meant to be in or if she even has a place anymore.

@whistlr Did you mark it as a priority? We had nothing but problems with DD's school, they dragged their heels on absolutely everything and so her grades have only just been changed, not ideal when the term has already started.

whistlr · 12/09/2021 10:55

@AzPie yes. It was marked as a priority. The exam board changed it or so we were told!

The school see our appeal as a confrontation. They are so defensive, they claim not to make mistakes!

A lot is riding on ours, obviously. If we get a rise in grades then we will be happy for our DS of course but it would also be open season for me to take on the school.

We put an appeal in last week for another A-level and when the school read it they removed the YouTube video that told everyone of their different process. So they must be worried now!

Cleanmean · 16/09/2021 07:04

We've submitted our appeal too after much deliberation and threats from school that the grade would probably go down. The absolute worst part of this while process is the god-like stance the school are taking. Refusing to accept they may have made some minor errors and getting all defensive. We've asked the review to be submitted to the exam board as we didn't really press on with the centre review even though we submitted all the paperwork etc. I won't be surprised if the school come back and tell us they won't submit to the exam board. Stress levels are high and I really hate taking on the school like this.

We won our appeal this week. the grade went from a B to an A with OCR for Computing. My DS now has his place for next year at Uni and will enjoy this year working, volunteering, travelling and being young!

@Cleanmean sounds like our school. I have worked very hard to get my appeal through with no help from the school. Our school told us we wouldn't win as they have it all right! If you want you can contact me and share notes.

Our school are now going to understand what the reality of us winning an appeal that questioned their flawed approach really means!

Toastcrunch · 09/10/2021 08:26

@Whistlr Congratulations! What a relief for you and your DS. We have been unfortunately unsuccessful at stage 2. My DD was 0.02% away from an A, very frustrating. Good luck to your DS for next year!
