Hello - I haven’t posted on here for months so am sure I will seem like a newcomer!

DS has mocks this week which means he has been working hard all weekend. Possibly if he put the general effort year 10 DD does then he wouldn’t have been working so hard this weekend but he does need to learn I think.

Still no progress on what he might want to do at university (says he does want to go). Most likely front runner at the moment is geography.

He has passed his theory test (after studying hard for just over a week) and cam basically drive and does drive us around as much as he can.

Plays guitar in a band - enjoys it a lot.

His girlfriend split up with him on Valentine’s Day (after he gave her a present….) Not sure whether a girl who came round here a couple of weeks ago might be a girlfriend although equally possibly a friend who’s a girl.

Generally he’s pretty nice and easy to get on with which is all good.

I will try and catch up now!

MirandaWest · 21/06/2021 15:40

Well done to your DD @KingscoteStaff 😊

There seem to be literally no tests available in York. I look every so often…

KingscoteStaff · 21/06/2021 16:04

Thanks all - I sacrificed my fingernails on the Wandsworth roundabout in a good cause!

Fiddlersgreen · 21/06/2021 16:41

Congrats to your DD @KingscoteStaff ! That’s great news. Haven’t sorted lessons here yet as everyone was booked up last I looked.

Well done to your DS @Piggywaspushed for his history A*, that’s amazing!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 21/06/2021 17:00

Piggy that's a fantastic result for your DS, well done to him!

DS is home from his English Lit exam and very, very down. He said it was much harder than he thought and that he didn't even understand the Chaucer question. Sad He also thought the Hamlet question was rubbish. The language analysis question was the only one he though was OK. I've told him to forget it now, it's done and I'm sure it isn't as bad as he thinks. Fingers crossed I'm right...

Piggywaspushed · 21/06/2021 17:05

I think sometimes if students say a question was hard that means they have thought about it. It's often a worrying sign when they say something was 'really easy'. The trouble with English Lit is it often all boils down to the question.

sansou · 21/06/2021 17:12

More of Y9 close contacts testing +ve this week including some with symptoms. All pupils asked in an email on Sun pm to LFT negative before going to school this morning. Y12 case confirmed this afternoon and all Y12 is joining Y9 with online lessons from tomorrow. That’s both my DC at home now. School bus decimated today - dropping off like flies here! We’re in the East - with a relatively low cases than the rest of the UK.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 21/06/2021 17:15

Yes, you are right Piggy. He says the Chaucer one was about marriage but he didn't understand the meaning of the quote they used in the question so he just wrote what he knew about marriage themes. I guess that's all you can do really. Well, we will find out in a couple of weeks I guess and if it's not gone that well I hope the teachers consider all the good essays he has done this year.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 21/06/2021 17:18

Oh no Sansou, that's not good. We had an email from the head today talking about the rates, the schools local district rates have climbed exponentially since March, the graph looks horrendous. The county doesn't look to bad as a whole in comparison. I wish they get on with the vaccines for the over 16s.

estherfrewen · 21/06/2021 17:25

@MirandaWest - have you tried Knaresborough for driving tests? I’ve had two cancellations for July today on Testi app.

Great results @Piggywaspushed! Your DS has done fantastically well

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn - my DS doing Eng Lit different syllabus and found mock difficult. He’s just starting his NEA bit now. Honestly there is so much in English Lit now - I did it in 1980 something when we did 4 books properly and lots of general reading. I didn’t do critical theory such as Marxism until degree level. It seems to be a whistle stop guide to Eng Lit now. It is DS least favourite subject, and he reads widely for pleasure still - obv not as much as he games....

Almost all mocks now in - A* British history, B French (says he made so many silly mistakes - got A for two papers and B for one but guess weighting affected final result) B for Eng Lit (A, B,B for the three questions). Still waiting for Russian history. He was disappointed in himself and voluntarily has asked for extra French which is usually his best subject and has upped his weekend homework to 4 hours a day. Surreal.... I think the amount of NEA stuff and EPQ is freaking him. It is freaking me... I literally cannot wait for the end of Year 13 as school has been majorly disappointing this year in so many areas. Today for example was the return of in person senior tutor tutorials - except senior tutor said he wasn’t coming so no input on personal statements etc... school makes me sad at the moment!

EwwSprouts · 21/06/2021 17:33

Great results Piggy.

Kingscote Glad to hear of another driving success. DS's friends are all failing first time.

ealingwestmum · 21/06/2021 17:44

Great results Piggy, looks like he’s really coming into his own now. I would say I may see you on the oxbridge thread if it ever resurrects but, I am a little wary of it, and it’s not even DD’s first choice at this moment. But the course on offer at C is.

Still all feels like forever away, and yet PS and drafts are due in by school first 2 weeks of sept. She’s home-school all this week alongside rest of school, then one week of social activities before final break up week. It’s all gone so quickly!

ealingwestmum · 21/06/2021 17:52

Welcome back Miranda Smile

Bovrilly · 21/06/2021 18:10

Ah, found you guys (lurker from previous thread).
DS has had his AS results, BCD. He would have been very disappointed with that pre COVID but it's actually an improvement on how things were looking during lockdown 3, so all power to his elbow.
He now has to convince his teachers to predict significantly higher than that on the UCAS form and says he will be working hard all summer to get ahead with Y13 work. Fingers crossed.

FoolsAssassin · 21/06/2021 18:20

Welcome back Miranda

Piggy that is excellent, a huge well done to him. I would also say see you on the Oxbridge thread but DS isn’t quite decided if having a go, depends on predicted grades I think . And I am also a bit wary of that thread .

That’s not good Sansou and sorry to hear about the English exam Popcorn 💐

Sorry to hear School making you sad Esther, I felt like that with DS’s old school and it was a relief he left. Great marks in the mocks he has there though and I have a feeling year 13 will fly by..

ealingwestmum · 21/06/2021 18:32

Agree with Fools esther, they are great results but if they fall short of your DS’s expectations, then his let me correct this attitude will hopefully be noted by his school ahead of final predictions.

DD got a C in her Maths AS. She’s determined to try and get this formally improved to a B, but inside is aiming for higher in next year’s sitting, if it happens. Silly mistakes and lack of confidence.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 21/06/2021 18:35

Blimey, Piggy, your DS is on a roll!
👏🏻

Piggywaspushed · 21/06/2021 18:39

Yes, I too am wary of an Oxbridge thread (and Oxbridge full stop) but it is often the only place to get clear info so I lurk!

I think DS just needs some time to sit down and think about what he wants to do. Anyone of his 3 subjects, or a combo, could lead to the same eventual outcome really.

Oblomov21 · 21/06/2021 18:57

Well done and thank you Monkey. Don't apologise for thread title, I really like it.

Oblomov21 · 21/06/2021 19:07

Ds2 (13) barely reads at all. Drives me wild.

Ds1 is a prolific reader and still is. He is currently reading a book on Napoleon written by my closest friends dad. He is also reading a book on maximus, so I recommended the film gladiator too.

He takes down notes of all good words and tries to get them into his sociology and psychology essays.

Oblomov21 · 21/06/2021 19:10

Beach how did I miss the Southampton thing. FPS I added my name to their list! Angry

Like crazycrofter it's my ds's favourite, actually it's the only one he's interested in at all (a bit worrying).

sandybayley · 21/06/2021 19:11

@Piggywaspushed come onto the Oxbridge thread with me. I'm nice and I'll look after you.

@KingscoteStaff congrats to your DD.

Oblomov21 · 21/06/2021 19:13

Hoorah Kingscote dd. Well done! 🚗

Piggywaspushed · 21/06/2021 19:14

Thanks for the handhold sandy. Will have to pin DS down. It's question of what he feels about the HSPS course.

Oblomov21 · 21/06/2021 19:16

Well done Piggy ds.

"Apologies , another boast coming! Look away."

Please don't ever say that, it's all cool,
