tights when DD doesn't like tights

Ireallydontcare · 12/06/2021 13:59

DDs new school are strict re: skirts with tights or black trousers.

DD feels she is too hot.

She hates tights but socks / long socks not allowed.

DD is secondary age

So what are the options to make her comfortable whilst sticking to school uniform? She would be the only girl wearing black trousers as I haven't seen any of the other girls without a skirt on.

It sounds like a very draconian school. But if you want to stay within the rules you either wear tights or trousers. Do they mean wooden tights or could she get away with hold ups or stockings.

Billybagpuss · 12/06/2021 14:07

Oh god, woollen not wooden 🙄

Northernlurker · 12/06/2021 14:10

If she wants trousers I would get those. Otherwise I would buy some more expensive tights in as light a denier as possible. It's not cheap to be comfortable

greensnail · 12/06/2021 14:13

My DD wears trousers to school, the vast majority of girls at her school wear skirts but it doesn't bother her.

I find snag tights more comfortable than other brands so maybe try those?

2020isnotbehaving · 12/06/2021 14:14

Everyone knows tights are not great for vagina health. They are known to cause problems and first thing you are told is to avoid synthetic fibres and tights. Surely socks are better than girls having to wear stockings? Can you imagine what the boys would make of that? I can’t imagine she be the only girl wearing trousers. Plus tights are expensive especially if they are thin ones that ladder at slightest knock.

LawnFever · 12/06/2021 14:15

That’s crazy how can they expect her to wear tights in summer, that’s ridiculous- can’t you query them uniform rules?

Do all the teachers wear black tights in the summer too?

Griefmonster · 12/06/2021 14:16

Cotton trousers? Cullotes? Cotton leggings and socks?

Howshouldibehave · 12/06/2021 14:21

Wow-my kids are at a very old fashioned strict grammar but even they allow socks!

UserAtRandom · 12/06/2021 14:23

She'll probably be best off wearing trousers. DD wore trousers for years and although in the minority she was definitely not the only one. Muslim girls at least will certainly be wearing trousers.
And I'd suggest petitioning the school to change the uniform.
Although (presumably) the boys have to wear trousers all year round. If they don't, definitely complain!

noblegiraffe · 12/06/2021 14:26

Socks are allowed at my school but no one wears them, it would be social death.

UserAtRandom · 12/06/2021 14:28

It's interesting how schools have their own "unwritten" rules. I would say at DD's school about 50% of the girls wear socks with skirts all year round. They obviously don't wear coats either. I have to resist asking them if they are cold.
Ireallydontcare · 12/06/2021 18:41

Its a private school

Their traditional uniform is skirt, or trousers, blazer, shirt and tights (no mention of socks and I've never seen any of the other pupils wearing socks. DD says they can't)

Their sports uniform is polo shirt, hoodie, joggers (all branded with their logo of course). This is for PE but apparently they can wear this on non PE days if no special events on. Again DD says everyone wears the traditional uniform on non PE days although we haven't been there in the winter yet as DD is still new.

DD thinks she will still be warm in joggers.

Snag tights. I hate tights too but I can wear them all day,

Ireallydontcare · 12/06/2021 21:50

I have snag tights and love them but they are thick. I don't know if they do lighter versions and how tear proof they are?

bubblebath62636 · 12/06/2021 21:52

Why not ask her to wear to wear trousers op?

Lou98 · 12/06/2021 22:02

My school had the same policy, it was because most of the girls after leaving the house would pull their skirts up so short, having tights on just gave that much more coverage otherwise all was on display.

I'm sure there are other girls at the school that wear trousers.
Unfortunately, that is the uniform policy, her options are wear tights or trousers. You could try and get thin tights which would maybe make her more comfortable or it would need to be trousers

Ericaequites · 13/06/2021 02:54

Try cotton tights?

avamiah · 13/06/2021 03:27

I would recommend John Lewis girls Opaque tights in black or grey, they are very thin and lightweight. You get 2 in a pack for £4.50 but stock up as they can snag easily being thin.
My daughter is Year 6 primary starting secondary in September and she loves them.

Stinkywizzleteets · 13/06/2021 04:06

Send her in fishnets. It’s technically following the rules. They might then allow her socks after that

romdowa · 13/06/2021 04:12

We weren't allowed Bare legs at my first secondary school and the girls used to wear skin coloured tights in the heat as they were cooler and technically their legs weren't bare

TeenMinusTests · 13/06/2021 08:30

Whereas at DDs school, loads of the girls wear short socks in summer.

Strange how things are different at different schools, isn't it?

Whyarewehardofthinking · 13/06/2021 08:36

OP, Snag do thinner thinner tights. I've got multiple students wearing them because they are much longer lasting than others.

noblegiraffe · 13/06/2021 08:42

I saw a Y7 walking into school with bare legs the other day and did a double take because it looked wrong as so unusual!

More of the girls wear trousers than skirts in the older years too, maybe because the skirts are really unflattering.

MilduraS · 13/06/2021 08:59

Have you tried any tights designed to keep you cool? I had some a few years ago and can't for the life of me remember the brand name but it looks like M&S have a similar range called cool comfort. I haven't tried the M&S ones but the version I tried worked fairly well. I wouldn't say they kept me cool per se but I felt no difference between wearing the black opaque tights and no tights at all even in the height of summer.

whyareallthegoodnamestakenx · 13/06/2021 09:01

Get black leggings and black socks, problem solved. :)
