SW London Girls' Private & Grammar - applying for year 7 in 2022

I watched with interest the information and support on this thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/secondary/4177427-PART-3-SW-London-Girls-Indies-11-Results-Decisions-Panic-Over and wanted to start the same thread for South West London parents with daughters who will be applying for secondaries (independents and grammar) for places in year 7 in Sept 2022.

Where are you applying, how are the virtual open days going..... and to tutor or not to tutor?

ah thank you @Flossietea ... if she does get through to next round I might PM you ...I did worry about it being a hothouse but I really liked it when we toured ...so nice to get positive feedback !

Flossietea · 08/12/2021 18:37

@Benny12 definitely not a hot house, or at least not so far. Year 7 seems a breeze after the slog of year 6 and 11+ prep. I think this is true of most of the schools mentioned in this thread. Year 7 is pretty relaxed because they are settling in and finding their feet. DD only has 20 mins of homework most nights and is keeping up fine in her lessons.

The challenges are more practical - remembering what book to bring home, keeping track of what is due when, remembering when she needs her PE kit etc. I think the schools know they need this year to figure that stuff out so they can start to push them a bit more academically in the years to come.

I mean, they’re all bright girls, they’ll do fine. Where I think the added value comes is the opportunities outside the core curriculum like drama, sports, art, music etc, and at LEH we’ve been so impressed with the quality and standard of what’s on offer, but also that everyone is welcome no matter their ability.

Hello everyone! What a wonderful community you have here!
Our family is moving to London in summer 2022. My kids would be joining Year 7 and Year 5.
My daughter is doing 11+ now, for my son I'm looking for an occasional place.
She did ISEB and we are now waiting for the results... I don't think I was ever this worried about any of my exams...Thank god, Francis Holland Regent Park wrote that they will let us know if the daughter would get through to the next stage before Christmas.
She also got through the first stage in SPGS.
For the rest we just need to wait and see.
It is quite worrisome now because of the whole corona restrictions... So far I got the tickets to London for 2.01, hoping the schools will remain open and the SPGS exam and interviews will be life.
Was there any talk about homeschooling in the UK?
Cause they started those talks in Berlin now, so the kids might be on homeschooling after Christmas holidays...

refusetobeasheep · 09/12/2021 14:12

@confusedmomfromBerlin no talk of home schooling after Christmas over here yet. Although in my DD's class, 3 are dialling in online from home as they've tested positive. I suspect it will continue like that in January - going in, but set up to teach those from home who test positive. It's daily LFT testing for us at the moment. Without which, we would not know about the three as none have any symptoms.

refusetobeasheep · 10/12/2021 17:33

So we got the Surbiton High email today, DD has been invited for interview. She is not impressed, as it seems all her class have decided en masse they don't want to go there ...... as its the first result we've seen I don't think we can just let it go yet.

HighRopes · 10/12/2021 18:04

We also just got an interview invitation from Surbiton. Dd is keen, she likes the sports there and they’ve done a really good job of making the process 10yo-friendly; she liked the good luck card, and the Ribena.

SkaterGrrrrl · 10/12/2021 18:07

DD got a Surbiton interview, it's our first choice so very pleased. Well done to your girls who have made it to the next round!

chocolatedrops2 · 10/12/2021 18:28

Since when did Surbiton start interviewing? Good luck to your girls.

SkaterGrrrrl · 10/12/2021 19:27

Ooh is that a new thing? :)

OP posts:
Benny12 · 10/12/2021 19:38

@SkaterGrrrrl ...the registrar said it was a new process this year ...did they not interview in previous years?

chocolatedrops2 · 10/12/2021 20:37

I have never heard of Surbiton interviewing before. They used to just include some “getting to know you questions” in the exam. They were always the first school to get their offers out too.

Meimng · 11/12/2021 05:26

DD also got Surbiton interview invite. I'm pleased ;) Did anyone know how many they have invited to interview, hence the rough ratio of getting a place?

1forward2back · 11/12/2021 13:46

DD Also got an interview at Surbiton, and out of a large number in her year who applied, all got one, so maybe they are interviewing a large majority. @refusetobeasheep I think our DD might be in same school…similar sudden anti feeling, and from parents WhatsApp too.

Meimng · 12/12/2021 08:48

But what caused the negative sentiment?

refusetobeasheep · 12/12/2021 09:27

@Meimng I think it's mainly centred on lack of space - they've seen schools with lots of grounds etc and in contrast SHS felt a little claustrophobic. Then add in they're ten year old girls and suggestible and the negativity flies!

refusetobeasheep · 12/12/2021 09:30

@1forward2back I've not seen much on parents WhatsApp though (different class, same school maybe!) so don't know why parents are anti too?

HighRopes · 13/12/2021 07:51

Has anyone from the previous thread or who has been to an open day know when results are going to be sent, or at least when they came out last year? I was looking and only WHS has a date, the rest are “mid Feb”.

I seem to remember some were just before half term, but some earlier, but it was several years ago and I can’t really remember.

Tagliatelevision · 13/12/2021 09:07

Last year's WHS invitation to assessments was communicated in 15th Jan, our assessment was on 21st Jan & offers were sent 5th Feb

Tagliatelevision · 13/12/2021 09:11

PHS results were the same day as WHS
G&L 11th Feb
IPS & FHSS 12th Feb
SPGS was the last Friday of half term...19th Feb

HighRopes · 13/12/2021 15:30

Thanks, Tagli!

I just heard that Sutton offers will be posted this Friday, as they’ve been delayed by late sitters.

puzzledmom · 13/12/2021 22:35

@Benny12 @Optimistic2022 late to the thread but really nice to have a community to share the 11 plus journey.

For LEH, mine left 9 NVR questions, finished VR and problem solving...

Benny12 · 14/12/2021 06:49

thanks @puzzledmom ...

Meimng · 14/12/2021 07:50

@HighRopes

Thanks, Tagli!

I just heard that Sutton offers will be posted this Friday, as they’ve been delayed by late sitters.

Yes, Sutton will post the offers. They said they had over 350 applied for 11+ how many seats do they have?
Optimistic2022 · 14/12/2021 09:01

@puzzledmom thank you for sharing your DD’s experience.

HighRopes · 14/12/2021 09:05

Meimng It’s a smallish school (from memory about 80 in a year) and has a junior school, so I’d assume not that many spaces. But also, it’s a logical back up for the Sutton grammars, Tiffin, WHS, so I’d assume they over offer quite a bit. In my older dd’s year, I was told that girls working at the expected level or above (in National Curriculum terms) reliably got offers.
