SundayTimes Top 100 League Table

I wonder why today's table for top 100 secondaries - state and private merged is not on line. Anyway it's interesting in general. 18 state schools in the top 100 and my older children's old schools at I think placed 2, 12 and 18. I think 5 year averages are fairer. No state school in the top 20.

Interesting article says that although some state schools do get good A level results although they're completely eclipsed by the private schools who only educate 7% of children, they aren't as good at getting into university and that perhaps the reason is the schools don't educate broadly and roundly beyond cramming for exams.

Nottingham High School for Girls - 68 has 89.6 A/B a t a level.

School1 St Paul's girls is 98.8 AB and 99% A - A. School 2 my daugher's old school has 99.4% A/B a level and 97.4 A/A GCSE.

I cannot see the others.

I don't know why it's not on line. My brother's children's school is there and my sister's potential one (if they get in !)

ooh, xenia, are you looking them up? If so, could you look for Trinity Hull?

CantSleepWontSleep · 18/11/2007 14:02

Xenia - you realise we're now all going to ask you to look up schools we are interested in! Perhaps it would be easier to type out the whole list for us!

But if you are looking, could you see if either Hitchin Girls (state) or Princess Helena College (private) are listed please?

Judy1234 · 18/11/2007 14:06

It only has the top 100 on the chart I was looking at and it's not alphabetical. The state ones are in bold (18 of the top 100). I can't see the Hull one.

On the web site they have the top 500 private and separately state - not sure why. The top 100 of the top 500 private is virtually the same - www.timesonline.co.uk/parentpower/league_tables.php?t=independent_secondary_schools

top 500 state is at www.timesonline.co.uk/parentpower/league_tables.php?t=state_secondary_schools

Where's Repton?

hunkermunker · 18/11/2007 14:09

Oh, found it - thanks for link.

Judy1234 · 18/11/2007 14:10

I just found you can search on the site. Repton is 111 and was 116 last year. Presumably that's on the on line private schools only chart and as it's not in the first 100 it's not in the newspaper mixed table I have.

The best 4 schools are all girls. St Paul's boys is 5th and Westminster boys 6. Eton 10. Winchester 13.

I like the way it looks at both A level and GCSE so there's not so much of a fluke in the results as you get with some tables.

Gosh, my school is on the list.

CharlesandEddie · 18/11/2007 14:28

state and private not directly compared - seems odd

CharlesandEddie · 18/11/2007 14:29

i am much more interested in a level than gcse and they seem to rank primarily by the latter

Earlybird · 18/11/2007 14:47

Why are many of the top London private preparatory schools not on the list? No Frances Holland, Newton Prep, etc.

scienceteacher · 18/11/2007 14:51

I think the prep schools that are on the list are the ones that voluntarily do SATs.

Elphaba · 18/11/2007 14:58

My old secondary school and the boys' potential secondary school (please God) are in top 100 state. Huzzah.

Judy1234 · 18/11/2007 15:29

They are compared in the newspaper hard copy - state and private together.
If you want me to check a top 100 on that chart I can.

Prep list they cannot really do as not the same stats as for GCSEs.

thanks xenia i am interested in Ermysteds Grammmar School and Skipton Girls Grammar...

Judy1234 · 18/11/2007 19:27

Skipton Girls High school is 88 on the state school table but not on the top 100 of all schools.
Ermysteds is 47 (so better) on the same table.

I don't see why they don't merge the state and private ones as it gives a false picture on either list except the top 100 in the paper that is merged.

THe school I will be sending dd to does not do that well alhtough we know it is not the most academic of schools. IN the early 200s for prep and late 300s for secondary. They are rising though.

Not that many north west schools outside if Mancester in the top figures. There is a school in Blackburn that I had never heard if though.

What is this league table based on.

twinsetandpearls · 18/11/2007 19:34

Highfield priory does a lot better than my dd future prep but I have a feeling many of those children will end up where dd is anyway. HIghfield is closer to where we will be buying our new house though.

twinsetandpearls · 18/11/2007 19:35

fees slightly cheaper as well.

CharlesandEddie · 18/11/2007 19:37

thanks for that

CharlesandEddie · 18/11/2007 19:38

thanks for that

Judy1234 · 18/11/2007 20:24

It is based on A levels and GCSEs. From the table of top 100 where it gives how many children got A in their A level and A or A* in GCSEs it gives the % who got those and so it's the pure exam results. I imagine they leave out needlework and that kind of subject. It looks reasonably sensible because it has most of the schools you would expect in the positions they usually appear. Manchester grammar at 32 (in the joint state and private table), leeds girls high school 51 etc.

It is interesting how the SE does so well, isn't it? I wonder why that is. If you go say Newcastle where I come from my brother's old school Newcastle royal grammar which I haven't looked up is probably doing okay but there will be that one school there. Then head to Chester ad King's school - one good school etc but to go around here and we've got schools like St Paul's, Westminster, Merchant Taylors, Haberdashers, North London Collegiate school after school in the top 20 and both the only state schools in the first 27 are here too so are people just cleverer in the South East? Or is their money somehow buying the children better grades or are there just more people full stop?

It is interesting that the SE does so well, even more interesting when you consider that one of the main feeders for dd new school is in Windsor - we must get the thick but devout ones
