Oh sorry @Alsoplayspiccolo, I see school have arranged a counsellor- although to be fair, Dd also saw the school counsellor initially with little success.

Shimy · 07/06/2021 00:09

Oh Piccolo that sounds really tough. I can relate to the upand down like a yo-yo not able to self regulate emotions plus wanting to be everything all at once aspect as ds2 has adhd. Just know, you are doing a good job. You are reassuring her and working round her highs and low whilst also setting boundaries.

Oblomov21 · 07/06/2021 07:24

Crazy you visited Southampton?

crazycrofter · 07/06/2021 08:31

@Oblomov21

Crazy you visited Southampton?
Yes, we parked at the campus and walked round, then up to the Glen Eyre halls. We then drove through Portswood, as apparently that's the main student area and spent a couple of hours in the city centre (dd and friend in Primark!).
AnneOfCleavage · 07/06/2021 08:39

Sorry to hear your DD is having a tough time at the mo AlsoPlaysPiccolo. Hormones play such a huge part in their lives and we spend a lot of time on eggshells which doesn't help our hormones and stress levels either.

CrazyCrofter did your DD's driving licence turn up in time for her birthday? Glad the uni town visit went well. We too DD round Plymouth last summer as we were nearby on holiday just to visit the town and see the outside of the Uni as she may possibly choose there. We have Winchester booked next month but that is to actually look round as they are open to visits now.

DD is getting a bit daunted by the realisation that this (Uni) is actually happening and still feels like she isn't going to be "grown up" enough to go to Uni. I keep reminding her that she's still 16 so this is a normal reaction and we're just taking baby steps and that it's quite a way off yet. Two of her cousins are going this Sept so she'll chat with them to see how they are doing with it all and hopefully that'll fire her up. They are both home birds too.

Seeline · 07/06/2021 08:53

@AnneOfCleavage I think my DD is having a similar wobble (not 17 until end of July). Having been set on psychology since Y10, she now doesn't think it may be right, hasn't a clue in an alternative. I think a half term of revision (first exam today) has made things all a bit more real. Still haven't got her to visit a uni -everything keeps plotting against us- as I think that might help.

crazycrofter · 07/06/2021 09:12

@AnneOfCleavage no sign of a driving licence yet! She doesn't seem too bothered - she definitely wants to be able to drive, but I think she's a bit scared and knows she won't be good at it!

She's also not really feeling ready to think about university, but yesterday definitely helped. She was originally thinking of Psychology @seeline, but now she seems to be set on Occupational Therapy.

Dd's exams are the week of 21st June. She said she was going to make a revision checklist soon! Progress!

20Newnames · 07/06/2021 09:59

Sorry to hear about the drama @Alsoplayspiccolo, I understand and have been there with older DC. It is exhausting and continuous, and so hard as a parent. Someone once said to me that you're only as happy as your unhappiest child, I think they are probably right :-(

AnneOfCleavage · 07/06/2021 10:42

20NewNames yes I've heard that saying too.

That's a relief then crazycrofter because if she'd had a lesson booked in it would have been so disappointing. Is it because you had to send off a photo? A friend's DS is still waiting for his for this reason whereas I used the passport pic.

Seeline I'll reassure DD that she is not alone in feeling this way. She's a summer born too so always feels like she's playing catch up in every situation. She's pretty set on a gap year but we'll still apply as normal (we have to by Oct so really not long) and see what they offer. I think a gap year of maturing, earning some money and having a brain rest would do her the world of good and she'll be one of the older ones when she starts - although I've heard a gap year is really common esp since CV.

ChristopherTracy · 07/06/2021 10:44

Hang in there @Alsoplayspiccolo you're not alone!

Birmingham real life open day booked!

Shimy · 07/06/2021 12:35

Birmingham real open day booked here too.

Piggywaspushed · 07/06/2021 13:36

We might have to wear identifying badges! Or tabards like they do in little schools.

We're in Birmingham on the Saturday...

crazycrofter · 07/06/2021 14:21

I live in Birmingham and work at the university - but won’t be there on a Saturday! Enjoy the open day, it’s a lovely campus.

By the way, I can recommend visiting unis on a Sunday if you don’t like the crowds! And you don’t have to pay for parking either. We managed to park on campus for free at Southampton and Oxford Brookes...

Shimy · 07/06/2021 14:42

We need to have a sign, for #BirminghamDay. A funny hand shake or something like that, that everyone will recognise.

Zandathepanda · 07/06/2021 16:16

Can I come without Dd? Grin

Zandathepanda · 07/06/2021 16:20

That was a joke btw but after a horrendous first day back, only partly joking!!
The school have decided over 1000 of them are mixing now. No more year bubbles. Lots of anxious kids and teachers unmasked in corridors, with no one knowing where they are supposed to be. The timetable sent out was wrong over the holidays.

AnneOfCleavage · 07/06/2021 16:22

crazycrofter is that true for all Unis? Free parking and less crowds I mean? That's great knowledge to squirrel away if so.

crazycrofter · 07/06/2021 16:52

I have no idea @AnneOfCleavage but you can find parking for visitors details on the uni websites. I’m not a fan of wading through crowds or driving round an unfamiliar city looking for parking so this was a bonus!

Oblomov21 · 07/06/2021 17:37

Can I come too? Wink

I wanted to go to Birmingham. It was the best for Russian. I didn't get the grades.

EwwSprouts · 07/06/2021 21:29

I went round Birmingham back in the day. That scary lift put me right off.

KingscoteStaff · 07/06/2021 22:15

Ooo like in the David Lodge book. I’ve always longed to try one.

EwwSprouts · 07/06/2021 22:31

I did go on it. Getting on was fine but getting off felt tricky as the height of the gap wasn't huge. I did not want to find out what happened at the very top!!
