Also, how quickly did you get a result if you took a test?

Monkey2001 · 20/05/2021 21:53

I think it is only the test taker who has to SI. I had a test before Christmas, when they were slow. I think it could be 24 hours now, depending on where you are.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 20/05/2021 22:36

Thanks Monkey. He took it in Hillingdon, he was the only one there so I’m hoping they haven’t been too busy.

Fiddlersgreen · 20/05/2021 22:41

We’ve done tests twice in the past year (one for me and one for DS2, separate occasions) first test was about 8am and had received the result by the time we got up the next day.
Second time we waited 3 days for the result.

I thought if one family member had to be tested due to having symptoms then the whole household had to isolate until negative result.
Think it’s only if one had to self isolate due to being a close contact if someone with a positive test, that the rest of the household didn’t need to isolate (unless symptoms started)

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 20/05/2021 22:47

Ah Ok, so better keep little DS home tomorrow then just to be on the safe side.

Piggywaspushed · 21/05/2021 06:45

Yes, whole family has to stay home.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 21/05/2021 10:18

Blimey, that must be the fastest test response known to man. Tested at 7.30 last night, just had a text to say negative! So just man flu than!! Grin

Monkey2001 · 21/05/2021 10:40

Hurray @JustHereWithMyPopcorn, he can now cough and splutter with no worries!

Zandathepanda · 21/05/2021 10:47

Great news Just
Good of you to test - friend of mine got it from work from someone who had symptoms but ignored them as he wanted to go out on work beers. Luckily my friend only had a headache and a loss of taste for a week. The person who gave it to him (28) was in hospital for some time. And he gave it to half the office so no work beers since then.
There’s been aggravation amongst ill Uni students being pressurised not to get tested by flatmates wanting to go out too.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 21/05/2021 11:18

Lazy sod is still in bed! He thinks this is some kind of sick day and I have just yelled at him to get up and do some work. Such a mean mum but at least he can go out tonight.

@zandathepanda he was doing his best does eyes at me to be allowed to go out tonight, I get that there would be pressure if you lived in a house of young people. That story about Derbyshire just made me a bit worried so thought it was the best thing to do. I am very glad it came back negative!

Fiddlersgreen · 21/05/2021 11:26

That’s great news @JustHereWithMyPopcorn

Zandathepanda · 21/05/2021 12:21

Just oh do sons do doe eyes too? Dd2 has got it so much down to an art form, it’s backfired as we parody it. Best ever for doe eyes = the dog. She gets her eyebrows ‘working it’ independently for maximum effect around human food particularly cheese.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 21/05/2021 13:18

It is Fiddler I am relieved.

Oh yes Zanda, he certainly gives it a go, along with a cartoon downturn mouth! Grin. Dogs are definitely experts in it though.

Monkey2001 · 21/05/2021 14:55

Wow @Zandathepanda, that is the sort of cautionary tale which lots of people need to hear! We had nervousness about getting tested before coming home from university as anybody testing negative in the bubble would have meant they could not come home. We will all appreciate small freedoms for a while when this is over!

Zandathepanda · 21/05/2021 16:46

Yes I wish they could hurry up and give the Uni students at least one dose before they come home! I think more students will stay in their Uni towns to live it up with their mates for a longer while after term finishes though to make up for lost partying. Uni Dd is the only unvaccinated one in our whole family now, despite her being a vaccination volunteer.

Still no cases in Year 12 here - can we get through a whole half term?!?!

whatsnext2 · 21/05/2021 18:41

Found you again!

crazycrofter · 21/05/2021 21:06

The whole of Ds’ year (10) have been sent home now due to several cases! That’s him off until after half term (and he’s only spent Monday and half of Tuesday at school this week!).

FoolsAssassin · 21/05/2021 21:15

Oh no Crazycrofter. It’s starting to feel a little bit like the autumn on here with isolations starting to creep in again. I’m hopeful things will hold up in terms of hospitalisations with the vaccine but it could get quite disruptive for some in terms of education I feel.

EwwSprouts · 21/05/2021 22:00

Crazycrofter What a pain! At least not an exam year.

Monkey2001 · 22/05/2021 00:01

I don't know what to think about bubbles self isolating when we are 1 month from the intended end of restrictions. If we are supposed to be migrating to a way of living with the virus, surely we can't keep sending year groups home. Does anyone think 21 June will be end of restrictions?

Piggywaspushed · 22/05/2021 06:34

I don't think we keep sending whole year groups home at secondary monkey. That's really rare and usually means a lot of (connected) cases. We have had two cases now and about 30 kids were sent home. It still isn't ideal. Some schools were doing trials of only sending home the case and doing 7 days of testing for contacts (I wonder how many comply and how accurate the LFT outcomes are) . It is ethically quite unpopular because of consent issues and government is being coy about how it is going . That said- she says cynically- I am sure the results of the trial will be what they want! With case numbers low in many areas I doubt they are learning much.

I suspect they will stick to June 21st whatever ( as seems to be the way) and, at that point, announce no more SI for contacts. But for me, as a teacher, to be comfortable with that it would have to extend beyond schools, otherwise it feels like we are always the guinea pigs : cf schools losing masks this month when nowhere else did!

My views are coloured by the Indian Variant : 50 cases in one local school (including a teacher in hospital), about 15 now in DS's.

I feel a bit bleak about it all. Rock and hard place.

Masks back from Monday at my school. Head must be so annoyed. He is a borderline covid denier and has never been seen in a mask!

FoolsAssassin · 22/05/2021 06:51

Peston tweeted this week that he had been briefed that the likelihood of full lockdown being lifted on 21 June is close to nil. It’s usually him who gets the briefing and gets to sow the seed of something with a gradual drip feed so everyone used to idea of whatever it is by the time it arrives l still leaves room for some relaxation so some hedging bets going on I think at the moment.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 22/05/2021 07:38

That’s not good crazy 😕, it is worrying to hear the cases rising in schools again. Hopefully he can get some good revision time in while he’s off, I’m assuming his end of year exams are close?

Our school are still wearing masks. Head has said must wear in corridors and when moving around school, don’t have to in class but they would prefer if you did. My younger DS is still wearing his, not sure about older DS.

Monkey2001 · 22/05/2021 08:41

@Piggywaspushed sorry, poor choice of words from me. I was quite taken aback by Crazy's news that a whole year was sent home, on top of the Derbyshire school being sent home. Having been encouraged by the sharply falling death rate and the very low cases in my area it felt like we were near the end.

Sorry to hear about the alarming rise in your area and the teacher in hospital. The government attitude to the safety of teachers had been appalling - University students are getting vaccinated in Wales and Scotland and I can't see why they would be prioritised over teachers.

Piggywaspushed · 22/05/2021 09:13

Thanks monkey. No offence taken! We sent the whole of year 12 home, to be fair, before Easter - but there were so many cases contact tracing had got out of control. It is a scandal that teaching leaders have been put in charge of contact tracing and isolating cases, including in holidays. I am sure many school leaders, too, would like to see the back of SI. You could tell the head at the school near me was very upset at having to close again but also shaken by events.

My second jab, happily, has been brought forward, because of Indian Variant, I assume so I am getting it next week, 4 weeks earlier than expected. But, yes, the teaching profession is on average quite young so there are plenty still completely unvaccinated.
