Where did you hear that non Bekynton houses were doing"packaged food" and that messing kitchens were closed?

Windowblind · 26/08/2022 14:56

Parents with older boys
Messing kitchens in some houses have not reopened since covid and been converted into offices
Also a " wrap" is a common supper

nolanscrack · 26/08/2022 15:43

So you are saying that some houses have no messing kitchens and for boys supper they are getting wraps?

Windowblind · 26/08/2022 15:53

This is hearsay but reliable
but yes some boys don’t get access to kitchens now unless sixth form ( not sure if being hungry should be a privilege !)
It is very house and HM dependant
hence my question re houses for my son

are you a member of the eton management ?

nolanscrack · 26/08/2022 16:54

Just a parent, not something Ive heard a single boy or parent say and we know boys in a fair number of houses, very odd..if it was true then I would have thought a leggit ,at the very least, would have taken place..

Windowblind · 26/08/2022 17:02

Thank you !
I don’t know what a legit is ..
which house is your son in ? Sounds like you have a really good experience

I am afraid I cannot help you with that. My son did not do the Eton Test. He did the ISEB & after the interview they offered him a place. Good luck 🙏🏽

Roses81 · 07/03/2023 05:42

The Eton list test is not something that can be prepared for. DS said he had never seen questions like it. He did say there is no way we could have prepped him for it. It is a time pressured test .

Flyingsnow · 07/03/2023 09:36

Thank you so much for your reply ! I didn’t know they have this route as well, is this year PE 2 years before ?
thank you

Flyingsnow · 07/03/2023 10:54

Oh thank you very much for the reply !just My son said there are different topics , each topics have about 20-30 questions etc , so I just wonder how many topic boys complete in average ? By the way has anyone heard the offer yet ? It suppose out from yesterday

Roses81 · 07/03/2023 13:21

is this offers for tranche 1 you are referring to ? There doesn’t seem to be any dates on the website about when offers will be made.

Intergalacticcatharsis · 07/03/2023 14:21

Eton List Test would have been suspended for Covid entry years and also actual house master visits would have been online surely.

ISEB, List Test plus interview plus house master visits x 3 would be back as normal now.

The List Test should be kept confidential. It is a short test and boys should be rested and alert, that is it. In interview, boys should be themselves. School is very clear on all of that. No point confusing a child and trying to second guess if it is a performance alertness based test where they have to think on their own two feet.

huji · 08/03/2023 09:10

Yes entry for 2023 was done during the pandemic so most DC were offered based on ISEB done in school in bubbles, and online zoom interview. Obviously the reference from prep school was key so boys who came from traditional feeders were offered places as the heads were known to admissions and their judgement trusted.

However from what I have seen of boys who have been offered places in the 2023 starting cohort, this will be an interesting year, perhaps less diverse and much more 'old Eton' than the more progressive place it has become over recent years. It's a shame as it's quite a step backwards for them and may mean there are more bullying incidents and perhaps a more bullish behaviour from this cohort. I also believe there are very few bursaries in this cohort so again far less diverse. It's a real shame and feels like they were rather too hasty to give conditional places. Perhaps they will raise the bar with common entrance 'pass' rate to even up the playing field and accept more from waitlist.

Intergalacticcatharsis · 08/03/2023 09:25

“Perhaps they will raise the bar with common entrance 'pass' rate to even up the playing field and accept more from waitlist.”

From a legal/contractual point of view, once parents have signed a parent contract and paid a hefty deposit surely you cannot change the pass rate retrospectively?

All schools have issues with Covid years and not having followed their usual processes. It includes grammar schools who in some cases did not manage their harder Stage 2s.

Flyingsnow · 08/03/2023 10:38

Hi my son sit there Eton list on 16/1 and we were informed result will be out from this Monday 6/3 but up till now we haven't heard anything 😅, not sure it’s good or bad 😅

Flyingsnow · 08/03/2023 10:40

Sure ! Just we currently in the middle of waiting for the result so got a bit nervous 😅so just wanted to find out where he is roughly basically , he completed about 20 topics not sure it’s a good or bad one 😅

Zingapopo · 08/03/2023 12:16

Common entrance is 65% pass in everything, that’s not too high.
BTW I have friends with kids in same year as my son who had to sit the Eton Test .

The point is that Eton don't publish their common entrance pass rate, and offers are conditional, not confirmed. So there is no contractual obligation. I would imagine they are likely to be especially stringent with this cohort as so many boys were offered conditional places based on ISEB only, so they will want to be sure they are up to the mark.

Intergalacticcatharsis · 08/03/2023 21:02

As others have said, common entrance threshold is specifically specified in original offer communications from the school to parents of qualifying candidates. It has been 65 per cent for years… whether they specifically and deliberately made caveats for 2023 entry I cannot comment on.

Intergalacticcatharsis · 09/03/2023 09:31

@Zingapopo - “BTW I have friends with kids in same year as my son who had to sit the Eton Test .”
Were those B list children? So retested?

I think the Covid entry years have confused things a little bit.

Normally it is just apply by end of Year 5, do ISEB, provide school reference, then if you get through do Eton list test and interview. If you do well in BOTH then you are A list candidate with a conditional offer. Then you sit common entrance or Eton entrance, depending on what school you go to in Year 8.

Alternative route in you are a musical or academic high flyer (top of the top… )and get a scholarship later on in Year 8.

The year 8 exams for A listers are more a formality to check they are still on track. The real hurdle is the interview and list test, from what I had understood.

Intergalacticcatharsis · 09/03/2023 09:46

atomlearning.com/blog/the-eton-list-test-and-how-to-make-sense-of-it?__hstc=49052409.340136e8eb6736818c5408da8d9ff215.1678354987447.1678354987447.1678354987447.1&__hssc=49052409.1.1678354987447&__hsfp=877907794

That explains it quite well, overall. Whether the Atom learning site really is like the Eton list test or not, I don’t know… most boys say the list test is new to them.

Intergalacticcatharsis · 09/03/2023 09:53

@Flyingsnow - there is zero point stressing about the list test! They don’t just offer based on list test results but the overall boy’s performance including at interview. If they are concerned that a boy won’t thrive there, he may not get an offer even if he does really well in the list test. The list test is done on a bell curve like grammar school entries so they can provide feedback if he was in top 10, 20, 30, 40 per cent etc. of actual cohort.

Zingapopo · 09/03/2023 11:23

That’s right ….
