We just want our kids in school. Please. If at all possible.

And driving lessons. And good Mental Health. And happiness.

In-and-amongst all this Covid nightmare and lockdown debacle.

Blimey Anne, poor girl...that all sounds horridly stressful for 16 year old! Hoping it’s sorted quickly to put her mind at rest Flowers

TheySeeHerRowling · 15/12/2020 17:02

Anne, your poor dd, mastitis is horrible - I had it when dd1 was a baby and it was no fun All the best for a swift recovery and minimal pain

Sympathies to all those suffering with or because of Covid Flowers

sandybayley we are well jel about the ice skating - dd2 and I love a Christmas skate, it's the highlight of the season for us, but alas there is nowhere within 100 miles of us this year

Well, dd is 3 days from the end of term and still C19 hasn't made it over the threshold of her school - she is exhausted though, I am almost in tears of fatigue for your dc FoolsAssassin - the 23rd!!! It's inhumane Xmas Shock

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 15/12/2020 17:03

What a nightmare Anne your poor DD, like she doesn't have enough going on. Hope all blood test come back clear and that she is pain free very soon.

icanbewhatiwant · 15/12/2020 17:48

Yes... I hood those poorly feel better soon. Mastitis can't be very nice, I hope dd makes a speedy recovery.

I'm looking forward to the end of term too. Ds2 has so much homework all the time, almost all of it history. So it'll be good to have a bit of break. Ds3 in year 7 is getting tired too, almost the end of his first term at secondary. They finish thurs. I think we've made it without any covid cases in their years (I don't want to speak too soon)

I took ds for a drive this afternoon. He's had 2 driving lessons so far and it's made a massive difference to his driving. We went about 13 miles. All narrow country lanes, so lots of bends and pot holes to navigate, it's a bit worrying the thought of a car coming fast round a bend, but I feel safer on the country lanes going slowly than I do on the main roads. He might stall pulling out onto the main road, I don't like the speed on the main road either. I think we might try the main road Sunday when it is quieter.

crazycrofter · 15/12/2020 17:58

Sorry to hear about the covid and mastitis, hope everyone feels better soon. This has been a long term hasn’t it!

Ds(year 10) finally got sent home to isolate today but it’s only for a week as last contact was Friday. Dd finishes on Thursday. I feel we’ve been very lucky as there have been active cases in both schools since the first week back in September. I lose count of how many in ds’ year have had it and DD’s school have sent a letter about a case pretty much every day since half term.

Piggywaspushed · 15/12/2020 18:54

One good thing about DS being at a pretty mediocre school is it is part of a lot of widening participation programmes so they get much better opportunities than kids at my school.

Today he was registering interest for UCL summer schools which sounds interesting. Birmingham is constantly barraging him with info, too.

We have had no (known) cases in year 12 at all at my school. Very weird! I do think they lie though and just stay off a few days. We have had a few having to SI because of app pings or family cases.

This term has been the most exhausting I have ever known. Time to stop !

DS is now interested in an economic and social history degree but I think Glasgow is the only uni that does this. History degrees are so hard to research : it's a bewildering amount of stuff to read through! he very specifically likes history about the little people and the decisions made on their behalf (he is turning into a bit of a Marxist...)

crazycrofter · 15/12/2020 19:10

@Piggywaspushed I did straight History at Leicester and they used to do an Economic and Social History course but I can't find it now. Maybe it's a bit out of fashion?

It is very difficult to choose a History degree; I was browsing Southampton's modules the other day (for no reason as dd isn't thinking of History!) and they were so random! No particular theme to them at all... they just reflect the staff's specialities I guess. I was lucky in having a really interesting selection of modules to choose from in my day, compared to dh at Aberystwyth, where they were rather dull!

Piggywaspushed · 15/12/2020 19:39

Yes, that is exactly the problem.

With English, if someone loved Shakespeare , I'd automatically be able to say 'Birmingham'. If they love the idea of Norse and Middle English , York. Then I 'd be able to talk about exams and modules and types of assessment.

With history, I don't even know where to begin...

An awful lot of it seems to be focused on America and the slave trade /black history which is very different from my day and great in itself but not necessarily where DS's historical interests lie.

So far, I have established Birmingham possibly has more of a focus on social history and Warwick claims to do units on the social history of cricket and football ,which he'd love!

FoolsAssassin · 15/12/2020 19:43

Oh no Anne, mastitis is horrible. Hope she feels better very soon .

Thank you Rowling. I guess DD didn’t start until 1st October but 23rd does feel like it’s pushing it, not helped by DS starting early. Just sunk in that I am seeing her tomorrow 🙂

I guess a week not too bad in the scheme of things at this point CrazyCrofter. Frees him up in time for Christmas.m

Piggy I can’t imagine what this term has been like for teachers,

Very pleased to have heard from my Dad that he is having first dose of vaccine this weekend.

sandybayley · 15/12/2020 19:48

@Piggywaspushed - Edinburgh definitely used to offer Social and Economic History as I did it for the first 2 years before deciding on politics. But it looks like it's now only Economic History. How strange. Social History 1 was a great course.

Piggywaspushed · 15/12/2020 19:48

DS's grandad has had not great news form latest cancer check up so chemo begins soon. Now not meeting up SD outside at the weekend. I am sort of relieved about that bit because I didn't feel it was all that wise.

He is quite young (late 60s) but hopefully fairly high up vaccine list.

Oblomov20 · 15/12/2020 19:59

Poor Anne.
Poor ChristopherTracy.

Sandy, I have just tried to book Hampton C Ice skating (I adore HC and it was part of our wedding day) but it is sold out for December! Sad

So sorry to hear that Piggy, 2020 the year that keeps giving until the end 🌷

We were going to see my Dad for the first time in a year this coming weekend but cancelled that. Hoping to see him on 27th after we have effectively isolated since the 17th - depending on what rules are by then. He is 80 plus category so one of the first to get the vaccine.

Sorry to hear more COVID SI is required. We're already in tier3, it is becoming tedious but we stick with it.

AnneofC I hope the painkillers have kicked in and your DD soon recovers. That's really unlucky so young.

Piggy Friend did economics with history at Hull but this seems closest now, also has a history of games option & understanding states and markets. www.hull.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/history-and-politics-ba-hons

orangecinnamon · 15/12/2020 22:07

Sorry to hear about DS grandad @Piggywaspushed a rubbish year all round.

@AnneOfCleavage hope dd ok poor thing ?
@ChristopherTracy is this a reinfection for the household Flowers

I'm in bed - I've had bad back/flank pain since last week managed to get a telephone doc appt Monday and prescribed antibiotics poss UTI. I just feel so rubbish and stressed with work and exhausted. I am lying her with a little grin though ...Dd has made chocolate marble cake and the whole house smells of it. She also washed up, dried up and put away...usually such a diva about washing up Smile

FoolsAssassin · 16/12/2020 06:48

So sorry you are unwell Orangecinnamon, hope you feel better soon 🌷Great that DD has stepped.

Monkey2001 · 16/12/2020 10:40

Thought I would have a nice time catching up on this thread, but it seems to have been a bad couple of days. Sad

Hope things get better @AnneOfCleavage and @Piggywaspushed and that nobody has to isolate for Christmas.

DS had a dress up day last week so here is something to lighten up the stories here -

Corona Cohort - Year 12 - 2021 - NO 'Self isolating' please.
sandybayley · 16/12/2020 11:13

Great legs @Monkey2001 - reminds me of a photo DS1 sent from anniversary fancy dress party. He didn't explain it was fancy dress when he sent it and I wondered if he was trying to tell me something new...

His legs are not so good.

sandybayley · 16/12/2020 11:14

@AnneOfCleavage - your poor DD. I hope the mastitis clears up soon. I remember having it with DD and it was grim.

ealingwestmum · 16/12/2020 11:48

Love it Monkey. A young man who has great confidence, and clearly in touch with his feminine side will clearly go far in life!

Orange, take it easy and keep up with the pain meds. I hope the marble cake tasted as good as it smelt :))

FoolsAssassin · 16/12/2020 13:21

Excellent Monkey, agree on the legs !

First Covid case at DS’s college. Member of staff but no contact with the students and wasn’t in the 2 days before so no one has to isolate. Really hope they are ok.

crazycrofter · 16/12/2020 15:45

Sorry to hear of cases amongst staff. Ds’ school said today that they’ve dealt with over 1,200 cases of isolation this term. It must be a full time job on top of all their normal work!

Shimy · 16/12/2020 16:10

Sending best wishes to all those ill at the moment and hope you make a quick recovery.

Oblomov20 · 16/12/2020 17:25

He's got better legs than me Monkey. Love it! Grin
