GCSE Summer 2020 Thread 9 : Carry on Corona Cohort ‘Let’s Ofqual the whole thing off'

OrangeCinnamon1 · 18/08/2020 12:56

Welcome all to the 9th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort - the Corona Cohort!

This is a thread for supporting all young people ( and their parents) taking GCSEs regardless of the institute they attend or the grades they need. It is respectfully requested that we are all supportive and helpful to each other.

If you want to start a debate e.g state vs private - please do not within this thread.

Similarly it should be recognised that the grades our children need/deserve/want will vary across the board- we wish to celebrate and comiserate with all. One same grade outcome can simultaneously cause joy and despair for different posters and their families. Please be sensitive when responding to threads about grade outcomes.

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay on the Secondary Education Board (at least until Mumsnet HQ chuck us out Grin ) as from now on our DS/DD may go down various paths such employment, apprenticeships, higher ed etc so we decided not to be exclusionary.

Any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find. There is no preciousness about who starts new threads!

At this precise moment in time we are still awaiting GCSE results . At first these were to be that seem to have been produced by an algorithm that also takes very little account of Teacher Centre Assessed Grades. There is an appeal process but it was changed to include mock results and coursework, then taken down again for review. Now it has been decided that the higher of Centre Assessed Grades and Calculated Grades will be awarded in two parts??!?!

We are all STILL trying to protect our young people's mental health, which the government claims is their priority...when they talk about wanting students back in schools/college in September...

DD's alarm has gone off. Maybe she is planning to check for her email in 37 minutes?

FoolsAssassin · 20/08/2020 07:26

I guess this way no worrying that examiners could read his writing.

StillDumDeDumming · 20/08/2020 07:27

Just musing that dd’s school has opted for logging into the website rather than an email. Around 240 pupils. Are we thinking the system will cope?

YouAfterMe · 20/08/2020 07:29

Can I sit here for a handhold?

YouAfterMe · 20/08/2020 07:30

Actually - think will run out to get a special breakfast before 8 o clock rolls out...

GreekOddess · 20/08/2020 07:30

Our school is open for pupils to collect results from 9 until 10.30. No specific time for collecting.

I really ought to get up now! Been awake since 4am.

ScrapThatThen · 20/08/2020 07:31

Any ideas on this? Dd applying for a different sixth form (and has a conditional offer that she should meet) that doesn't usually have to turn people away (but gets 600 applications, takes 200).. also has an open offer from her own sixth form. But if we enrol in the other one, then hear they are oversubscribed (we are low down their admissions criteria), and then are late enrolling in her sixth form which is offering places to everyone so might be v oversubscribed, will she miss out? I know it's usually fine but it is not a normal year. I'm just stressing, right?

KingscoteStaff · 20/08/2020 07:32

Morning all! The sun is out, the sky is blue, the kettle is on...

Good luck everyone, and thanks for all the support over the last few years!

FlyingPandas · 20/08/2020 07:32

Morning Smile

Didn’t sleep well either, there’s a surprise.

Another one here expecting 8am results but “no, don’t wake me, I’ll just have a look when I wake up, there’s no rush,” says DS

HmmConfused

Now trying to decide whether i charge in and wake him anyway.

Good luck everyone!

goldface · 20/08/2020 07:32

Morning all, normally a lurker but checking in today! DS has to be at school at 8.30 and then the next lot in at 9 so not long to go. Massive luck to all of them

PaddingtonPaddington · 20/08/2020 07:36

Those waiting for their DC to wake up perhaps some vacuuming outside their bedroom this morning? Grin

frustrationcentral · 20/08/2020 07:38

So to clarify, is everyone expecting today's results to be the higher of either CAGs or GAVs? Rather than the original plan of CAGs today and final results next week?

I tried to look it up yesterday and only managed to find one article stating it was all today

itsgettingweird · 20/08/2020 07:38

Gave ds his card.

Says how porous I am about how hard he's worked.

Me "ds are you worried about your results"

Ds "no! I'll just get what I'm given" Grin

For a anxious autistic 16yo he's as chilled as ice blocks over some things!

He gets more stressed at the idea of getting on a bus Grin

blobbyface · 20/08/2020 07:38

Morning all. All quiet in my house apart from ds1 going to work. Very nervous as we've been warned grades are basically CAGs in line with the rules and not what teachers thought they'd get. Dd goes in to school at 9:30.

TheFallenMadonna · 20/08/2020 07:39

"Final" ie best of the two, today.

TheFallenMadonna · 20/08/2020 07:39

Except BTECs and Cambridge Nationals.

ScrapThatThen · 20/08/2020 07:40

That's what they said on radio 4 this am Blobby, I was surprised though as I thought it was cags only today.

FloweringFlowers · 20/08/2020 07:41

Haven’t slept, can hear Dd stirring upstairs.... 20minutes to go..... good luck to all.

IheartJKR · 20/08/2020 07:41

So we’re up... dd slept with me last night, there were some stress tears...

Dds gone to her room. I know to leave her. I’ll wait for her to come to me now. Results due at 8am.

Handholding for everyone, good luck to all of you and your dc.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 20/08/2020 07:41

@FlyingPandas I’m currently contemplating sneaking in his room and stealing his iPad to look at his school email. I’m not known for my ninja skills so not sure I’ll be able to pull it off...

Piggywaspushed · 20/08/2020 07:43

Nick Gibb, schools minister, on BBC really does expect us all to feel sorry for him .

No, no and ermmm , no.

FAQs · 20/08/2020 07:44

Oh god I feel sick with worry, dd did badly in mocks (failed several) and coasted through doing the min but was turning it around and getting 8/9s after Christmas, think the mock results finally woke her up. This isn’t going to go well.

Piggywaspushed · 20/08/2020 07:44

DS up at 7 (normal time). Slept fine.

The child is bewilderingly stoical.

itsgettingweird · 20/08/2020 07:46

I'm glad ds is chilled . But I can't help feeling a little annoyed that whatever we collect today will be a reflection of what he's been doing but also based on where the same ranked person was last year and what they got. So his actual ability can only be awarded as that if someone else was also that. He was doing well. Clearly any grades could realistically be across 3 levels because everyone has a bad exam, ok exam and storming exam.
But at least that would have been on him!

stoneysongs · 20/08/2020 07:47

DS up and we are currently watching game of thrones to pass the time 🤪
Email due in 15 mins
