GCSE Summer 2020 Thread 9 : Carry on Corona Cohort ‘Let’s Ofqual the whole thing off'

Welcome all to the 9th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort - the Corona Cohort!

This is a thread for supporting all young people ( and their parents) taking GCSEs regardless of the institute they attend or the grades they need. It is respectfully requested that we are all supportive and helpful to each other.

If you want to start a debate e.g state vs private - please do not within this thread.

Similarly it should be recognised that the grades our children need/deserve/want will vary across the board- we wish to celebrate and comiserate with all. One same grade outcome can simultaneously cause joy and despair for different posters and their families. Please be sensitive when responding to threads about grade outcomes.

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay on the Secondary Education Board (at least until Mumsnet HQ chuck us out Grin ) as from now on our DS/DD may go down various paths such employment, apprenticeships, higher ed etc so we decided not to be exclusionary.

Any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find. There is no preciousness about who starts new threads!

At this precise moment in time we are still awaiting GCSE results . At first these were to be that seem to have been produced by an algorithm that also takes very little account of Teacher Centre Assessed Grades. There is an appeal process but it was changed to include mock results and coursework, then taken down again for review. Now it has been decided that the higher of Centre Assessed Grades and Calculated Grades will be awarded in two parts??!?!

We are all STILL trying to protect our young people's mental health, which the government claims is their priority...when they talk about wanting students back in schools/college in September...

Morning all. Woke up quite a bit last night. Surprisingly DD (not normally seen before midday) woke me up this morning looking for more hair conditioner! I’m driving her in to school for 8am. Not long now...

TheTeenageYears · 20/08/2020 06:45

Wasn't expecting a bad nights sleep last might so a 4am wake up after 3.5 hours of sleep is not great. Have managed to kill a few hours, DD still asleep thank goodness. 1h 16m until results. DD did iGCSE's and got half last week, doing very well so thought the pressure was off for today!

motherstongue · 20/08/2020 06:46

I’m up and now just want the wait done with!
DD’s room is emitting no noise as yet and I don’t want to wake her as she was anxious last night and I’ve no idea when she eventually fell asleep. Her results will be posted on the pupil portal for her to access at 8.00 a.m.

it is a strange day for DD as she was a Boarder and decided to switch for 6th form to a day school. As we are in Scotland, her new day school actually starts today (terrible timing). She’s not expected to start school though until 10.30 am. so we have a little bit of time to hopefully celebrate (hopefully not commiserate) before she needs to head off to school. The upside is that I will now have her home every night and this fills me with so much joy! It’s quite a big day for my DD.

boredboredboredboredbored · 20/08/2020 06:51

This is the only contact we have had from Dd school. No good luck or acknowledgement of the shit show last week just a message about Covid. Our slot is at 9.45am to go into school, Dd already awake and very nervous!

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn I'm sure no jury in the land would convict you!

Morning everyone, sorry for those who haven't slept very well. I'm feeling pessimistic this morning - predicted grades have been fine but he didn't revise for mocks. Just depends on how the school have worked out their CAGs I guess. He is worried about his option subjects which will all be in the B-D range I think.

67 mins to go, I'd better get up so I'm ready to get him up at half seven.

KetoPenguin · 20/08/2020 06:54

Good luck to everyone and I hope they all do well.

frustrationcentral · 20/08/2020 06:59

Morning!

Shocking night sleep for me and a dream involving DS not getting a grade he needs to do one of his A Levels - Ahhhhh!!!

It's going to be a long morning

Rhubardandcustard · 20/08/2020 07:03

Morning all. Didn't sleep well like some of you.

Dd still in bed, torn between letting her sleep in and wanting her up and alert for 8am. Just emails for us, so I dont need to rush to get her up and out. Not sure I can actually eat anything this morning until I know what the results are.

Good luck everyone.

TheGodmother · 20/08/2020 07:04

How do you know what time you're receiving emails? I've heard nothing from DS's school.

itsgettingweird · 20/08/2020 07:05

I'm worried for ds because he seems to be one of those kids who thrives on exams and do well. Plus his school has a very bright cohort usually. On top of falling passes each year which may have affected their CAGS if they matched last year compared to past 3 year average iyswim?

OublietteBravo · 20/08/2020 07:06

I didn’t sleep well, although I think a large part of that was due to ‘D’H who just wouldn’t stop snoring. Results at 09:00 - not long to wait now.

stoneysongs · 20/08/2020 07:07

Results and first day at a new school is a lot to deal with on one day @motherstongue!

I suppose it'll be a good conversation starter! I hope it all goes well

TheThreeHeadedBeast · 20/08/2020 07:09

Good morning, another hour for results here, but DD has her new timetable and is timetabled for the options she wants, so cautiously optimistic.

Shark2020 · 20/08/2020 07:09

Good luck to everyone, we go into school at 10.30am

pasanda · 20/08/2020 07:10

Good luck to everyone. Feeling sick right now.
DD had a miserable time at school and fell out with a lot of teachers. I hope they didn't hold it against her when deciding on CAG's. History of self harm and pushing the boundaries in a big way. Can't even say she worked hard as she hadn't even started revising. And says she will not even try for the next 2 years if she doesn't get to do the A levels she seems to think she can ( which I'm sure she won't Sad)
So it's not only the results I'm dreading, it's also the next 2 years of disengagement if it doesn't go well.
DD is a tricky, complex and sometimes infuriating character who will not listen to adults if it is not what she wants to hear. Sigh....

motherstongue · 20/08/2020 07:12

Thank you Singingstones. She is actually really excited to start her new school. Fingers crossed she goes in a happy mood 😁

ShaunaTheSheep · 20/08/2020 07:12

Good morning all. DD has a 9am collection slot so I'm going to drop her, then find somewhere to wait. Apparently She's 'so over' these exams. Massively stressed about A level choices though, and hoping to get those sorted this morning too.

Will catch up on this thread while I'm waiting, and good luck to all the DC 🤞

JMG1234 · 20/08/2020 07:12

Another one who's been up since 5 while my son is happily sleeping. His results come through at 8, I asked him if he wanted waking but he said not... the calmness of youth!

On the plus side, I've done three loads of washing already.

Yr11mummy · 20/08/2020 07:13

Good luck everyone! I’ve been awake since 5am!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 20/08/2020 07:14

@TheGodmother

How do you know what time you're receiving emails? I've heard nothing from DS's school.
Our school emailed us in July about getting the results and then emailed us on Tuesday evening to say now they would be emailing the pupils at 8am.

Your school really should have informed you before today about how your DC would be receiving their results.

butteredbarmbrack · 20/08/2020 07:16

No email here ( unless it was specifically requested, but then you can't go into school, which DD was keen to do). So we have to wait until we pick results up from school. Slots allocated to each form group of 30, so DD is to arrive no earlier than 9:50 for a 10:00-10:20 slot. I'll have to wait outside til she's done with results/seeing mates/speaking to teachers (she thinks she wants to change her A level options). She is form 4 of 7 so I feel for form 7 whose slot isn't til 11:00....

Good luck to all!

itsgettingweird · 20/08/2020 07:16

That's a lovely positive to hear Smile
estherfrewen · 20/08/2020 07:18

Morning- another one who slept badly. Results by email - anytime before noon as in alphabetical order!

TheFallenMadonna · 20/08/2020 07:20

We have to wait until 11...

Linneasweet · 20/08/2020 07:21

I'm normally a lurker but can't just scroll through without saying something this time! I'm awake, nervous even though I shouldn't have a reason to be, daughter asleep and will wake up a few minutes before 8 (results emailed to her then). Thanks dear people for making me feel that I'm completely normal! Grin
Hope your DC get their results they need and can move on with their A-levels!
