Hi. I was on an earlier thread with a different name. Wonder if I can lower the tone by asking what the cool girls will be wearing into year 12. My Dd is gorgeous, but clueless about clothes. We are thinking black jeans, checked skirts and big jumpers, she likes converse trainers.Does that sound ok?
Her closest friends are going elsewhere, so she will need to make new friends, and I worry. She has had a lot of trauma, but is generally well liked.

Wheresthebeach · 29/07/2020 16:10

That sounds exactly what my DD likes to wear...however she's full on geek rather than cool so I may not be the best source of advice!

OrangeCinnamon1 · 29/07/2020 16:49

Hi Zebracat - my daughter favours A line minis - many of them checked too so sounds v similar ! Checks are big againin Autumn apparently. She favours Vans over Converse and is going through a phase of belly tops at the moment in the house ( roll eyes) but puts on big cardigans when she goes out. New look had some nice ribbed tops in last year that lasted well and went with black skinny jeans /a line skirts
like this

She also has a couple of jersey pinafores, blazers /naice blouses for smart and some vegan DM lookalikes from New Look. I suspect the overriding sense of fashion atm is 90s which quite frankly makes me shudder as it was only a decade or so ago - wasn't it Grin?

DD is going to a new college too she loves clothes but seems to get it completely wrong or right, in my eyes at least !

OrangeCinnamon1 · 29/07/2020 16:53

just realised link didn't work

OrangeCinnamon1 · 29/07/2020 16:57

@Zebracat Band t shirts/ Merch Jumpers from Primark or similar always seem to be a good taking point I've noticed . Dd often gets 'ooh I love your tee' type comments when she wears her Nirvarna shirt. In the past she has been known to wear Bambi and Ravenclaw to give you an idea of the range available.

Zebracat · 29/07/2020 17:57

Thanks all. Very kind. I think the difference between cool and geek is just too subtle for me. She’s not keen on exposing acres of flesh, although her legs are so long that any skirt tends to look short!

OrangeCinnamon1 · 29/07/2020 18:06

@Zebracat i think the geeky look IS cool at the moment.

What do I know? Dd was telling me the other day how much she hates my 50s style dress with mexican sugar skulls design on it...it is my absolute fave Confused

Zebracat · 29/07/2020 20:03

Its cardigans I really struggle with. I Love them all except the80s shawl collar type. Some of mine are really cool, and some totally granny, apparently. I do not understand the criteria. My Dd has a pair of black slouchy suede ankle boots that Iloathe, never seen another teenager in anything like them, but she loves them and wears them with eg denim shorts when trainers would surely be better. Guess we will muddle thru, really just distracting myself from the potential disaster of results day.

sandybayley · 29/07/2020 21:03

This is why I'm actually quite pleased that DD has to wear a suit. Just get one and wear it. No style choices to consider.

Heifer · 30/07/2020 06:56

My DD is miffed her school has slacked off on the uniform side of things for 6th form. She loves having a uniform apparently, especially as her one was comfy, and looked slimming! (her words not mine). She has decided that she will still wear a skirt (mini of course) with black tights and nice tops or as Orange has said naice, I thought that only referred to ham :-) She has bought a couple of blazers too and nicer teeshirts and bodysuits with cardigans for the more casual days. She considers herself fashionable but definitely not geek. I've been looking online for sale stuff (Debenhams Miss Selfridge especially) which originally she scoffed at (middle age stuff) but she did buy some stuff in the end that she liked - also did well on ebay - in fact a couple of checked mini skirts which was about 50p + postage and a jacket for £1.50! She won't even consider wearing jeans (which are now allowed) which is odd as she spends her life outside school in skinny jeans or Gymshark leggins.

BlueMarigold · 30/07/2020 08:09

Hello I am new to Mumsnet. I was looking for support because I am worried about how GCSE results day is going to go. Just like to know that I am not alone. Thank you for the videos. I found them very reassuring.

crazycrofter · 30/07/2020 08:21

Welcome @BlueMarigold! I think we're all a bit anxious - although I guess we would be even in a normal year!

I'm glad of sixth form uniform here - just buying a black school skirt was stressful enough, none of them were short enough apparently! In the end we went for age 12 from Sainsbury's. I just hope they're not too strict about length!

BlueMarigold · 30/07/2020 08:29

Our school says business clothes so not sure what to do and haven’t been brave enough to go shopping yet...

Piggywaspushed · 30/07/2020 08:36

We have no uniform in my school and DS's abandoned the business wear after a year of trying. Half the girls at my school turn up in actual gym wear which is an interesting look.

Piggywaspushed · 30/07/2020 08:37

Hi blue, some threads on MN (including in education) can be a bit feisty but this one is lovely! Welcome!

ealingwestmum · 30/07/2020 08:58

naice, I thought that only referred to ham

Me too Heifer, until joining MN where I see its use was heavily associated with schools. I went to a rough old comp in the late 70s but look at the experience with find memories now Smile

Going to be mourning the loss of uniform here; looks like it’ll be a cross between baggy jeans and either oversized mens’ T shirts or cropped tops. And copious amounts of extra weekly washing!

Welcome Blue!

OrangeCinnamon1 · 30/07/2020 09:03

Welcome @blueMarigold. It is nervewracking but will be over soon, there are some great virtual hand holders on this thread.

I had forgotten to tell you all that Dd is starting back singing lessons next week. Teacher seems great and has followed the same path Dd wants to do atm (Academic music degree then vocal tutoring/coaching) we also have a date slot for college enrollment and a results day slot when Dd will go in with her tutor group. She is pleased as her fave music teacher will be there, with her tutor group, too. lt all seems to be coming together and Dd excited for the future post results. I say this as I was worried about her phone use...that is going so much better fingers crossed.

Zandathepanda · 30/07/2020 09:06

Yep gym wear particularly the thin lycra leggings look is in here too! Hmm

OrangeCinnamon1 · 30/07/2020 09:07

Oh gosh yes

'Naice ham' was on a shopping list someone on here found once (are there still found shopping list threads). It is forever a Mumsnet term to me. Alongside the phrase 'bog standard comp' Hmm.

DD currently attends a 'Naice leafy comp' , of course Wink.

Zandathepanda · 30/07/2020 09:07

I should add that is for the girls Grin. Dark black skinny jeans for boys.

Northumberlandlass · 30/07/2020 09:12

Welcome @BlueMarigold 😊

I have just bought DS some new sixth form clothes - he’ll wear shorts most of the time, t-shirts & hoodies, but he asked for some new jeans, grey chinos & a selection of long sleeved Henley tops (HAD to have buttons). He has a mountain of hoodies already. Haven’t broached the idea of a bag / back pack yet!!!

Northumberlandlass · 30/07/2020 09:13

3 weeks today..... DS won’t get his results until noon so I will be on tenterhooks!

crazycrofter · 30/07/2020 09:15

Noon! I thought 10am was bad enough!

Northumberlandlass · 30/07/2020 09:20

I know @crazycrofter 😫 it’s because the school are inviting them in person & time slots have been allocated by surname! They are sending results by email at 2pm .... I bet DS’s phone will be on fire with news from his mates by 9am. I think it’ll be quite stressful! I’ve taken the day off & I’ll be glued to this board all morning!!

Wheresthebeach · 30/07/2020 09:37

Gosh noon! DD will be accessing hers at some unGodly hour like 7:30am.

I'm thinking of some sort of code for her to shout out.

I'm really happy - predicted grades awarded in most cases
I'm happy - predicted grades in important (for her) subjects, some downgraded/less than expected
I'm not happy - less than predicted in a number of subjects

Three weeks today??? God....
