Moving son out of Eton to attend Harrow instead

Asking on behalf of a friend... has anyone ever moved there son to Harrow after a year or two at EC?

Parent in question would like her son to be less Eddy Redmayne and more Benedict Cumberbatch, although I’m unclear as to whether each are typical products of their respective schools. She feels EC has rather failed to develop her son in to a well rounded man like Benedict Cumberbatch, and instead is encouraging her son’s academic success to the detriment of all else.

Given the fierce rivalry between the schools, are transfers between them rare? Surely parents can make an honest mistake in choosing the wrong type of public school for their children.

Hmm
Beesandtrees · 30/07/2019 08:09

Benedict is taller too. If it were me, I’d move him for the height thing alone.

Greyworm · 30/07/2019 08:12

Do they mention Benedict Cumberbatch on their curriculum? Maybe send them an email? Grin 😂

Rupert Campbell-Black went to Harrow and he's very rich and the handsomest man in England now.
Bertie Wooster went to Eton.
No contest, I'd have thought.

Wildorchidz · 30/07/2019 08:20

BJ is an old Etonian 😕

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 30/07/2019 08:20

Errrr is eddy less rounded then?? Unless you your friend knows either or prefably both of them personally i really don't undetstand thr "less eddy redmayne more benedict cumberbatch"

Your non existant friend seems to have pulled out two former pupils and bizarelly decided one is better than the other.

Surely you'd want to be more prince william and less benidict cumberbatch - so i'd stick at eton.

FossiPajuZeka · 30/07/2019 08:30

Changing schools does not create a personality transplant. This boy already has a personality which has been shaped over many years. If he is more Eddy Redmayne rather than Benedict Cumberbatch that isn't going to change now. Switching schools - if schools do dispense personalities like vending machines (which I doubt) - will certainly not help. A child arriving at Harrow from Eton or vice versa would almost certainly feel they had to embody every stereotype of their old school as a defence mechanism so the 'problem' would get worse not better.

Hoppinggreen · 30/07/2019 08:33

Does she want him to be Prime Minister?
If so I think that Eton is a prerequisite

Moondust001 · 30/07/2019 08:35

Does exclusive, selective, class-ridden over-privileged education ever produce a well rounded person?

flumpybear · 30/07/2019 08:37

Just speak to Benedict's parents and do a child swap - sorted

weaselwords · 30/07/2019 08:39

I’d pick Benedict Cumberbatch over Eddy Redmayne any day of the week. Good choice.

fishonabicycle · 30/07/2019 09:27

Hahahaha!

nolanscrack · 30/07/2019 09:57

One thing that Eton doesnt do is push academics to the detriment of everything else,it does the oppo,it has no interest in boys that are just academic...
One of the people you mention was a choral scholar,a graduate from Cambridge and ,has won a Tony and an Oscar, the other is an Old Harrovian Wink

Mrskeats · 30/07/2019 09:59

Presumably both schools know the difference between ‘their’ and ‘there’

Awaits that strange guy to tell you all how wonderful Eton is.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I recommend putting the boy into the local sink comprehensive school, that'll make him into a well rounded individual. He'll have the experience of an upper class wealth-driven selective education system where the amount of dosh mummy and daddy have means more than anything else, plus the experience of learning alongside students who's parents dont have two pennies to rub together, often live off benefits, and understand the real struggles of surviving in a money driven society.
Plus you'll save a fortune on school fees! Win win!

Morgan12 · 30/07/2019 10:10

😂😂😂😂😂😂 other peoples lifes eh

Shame, I might have fallen for it a bit longer without that little gem.

Until it got to Cumberbatch.

ForeverbyJudyBlume · 30/07/2019 10:13

I understand her pain OP, I'm currently seeing if my family can relocate to Los Angeles from the Home Counties because I'd like my dd to be more Meghan and less Kate. As you say, people make honest mistakes in their choice of schooling.

BertrandRussell · 30/07/2019 10:14

And there’s Wykecamist mother around isn’t there?

herculepoirot2 · 30/07/2019 10:18

That is a cracker, OP. Thanks.

😂

mimbleandlittlemy · 30/07/2019 10:23

Tom Hiddlestone also went to Eton if that's a help. And Prince William and Prince Harry. But then Churchill want to Harrow (and hated it). And the man who stole a lot of money from my old company, he was an old Harrovian...

It's such a dilemma grin

Weezol · 30/07/2019 10:27

Which school did Tom Hardy go to? If it's churning out more of him I need to know.
