Moving son out of Eton to attend Harrow instead

Asking on behalf of a friend... has anyone ever moved there son to Harrow after a year or two at EC?

Parent in question would like her son to be less Eddy Redmayne and more Benedict Cumberbatch, although I’m unclear as to whether each are typical products of their respective schools. She feels EC has rather failed to develop her son in to a well rounded man like Benedict Cumberbatch, and instead is encouraging her son’s academic success to the detriment of all else.

Given the fierce rivalry between the schools, are transfers between them rare? Surely parents can make an honest mistake in choosing the wrong type of public school for their children.

Does exclusive, selective, class-ridden over-privileged education ever produce a well rounded person?

Yes, it does. I know a lot of nice, kind, well-rounded people who had exactly this sort of education.

Parent in question would like the boy to be less insipid, palid eccentric type of swot and more unapologetic, braying, confident man with in possession of tonnes of B.D.E.

Surely Cameron and Johnson prove that Eton is pre-eminently capable of turning out unapologetic, braying men?

Passthecherrycoke · 30/07/2019 14:34

Harrow is for the slightly dim toff though isn’t it? Maybe she could have Marquess of Bristol instead?

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 30/07/2019 14:38

Dalek actally you maybe right. Personally I'd describe a "braying, unapologetic, (overly) confident man with tonnes of BDE" as a massive ASS.

so maybe OP has misunderstand "their friend". Maybe the friend said she was looking to get an ass (donkey) and OP thought she meant she wanted to make their son in to ass.

But yes Braying. Unapologetic, and BDE might be desirable qualities in donkeys, less so in 15 year old boys.i would think best way to get these qualities probably to get donkey and leave the poor kid where hes settled and has friend.

Flashesofrage · 30/07/2019 14:41

“Encouraging her son’s academic success to the detriment of all else”

Won’t be getting away from that at Harrow either.

Notmydalek · 30/07/2019 15:15

Naught yep the friend clearly wants a total ass, which is why my idea of leaving the lad at his current school and getting a donkey might be a good solution. And donkeys are appealing to look at and useful which is more than can be said about many 15 year olds.

iklboo · 30/07/2019 15:17

If the 'friend' wants a donkey maybe she should hook up with Pinocchio & his mates.

Strangers have commented on dh similarity to BC and he has a very good character. He went to a rural comp then Cambridge think of the thousands his parents saved Grin

They need to change the name of those entrance examinations. Common indeed Angry!

Surely “ exclusive and only for the right sort of person who can pay the fees entrance examination” would be better.

EarlyModernParent · 30/07/2019 19:29

Plenty of B.D.E. In young offenders’ institutions. Easy to get into, to boot...

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 30/07/2019 19:33

Well figure what do you suggest calling a set of exams common to a number of schools?

It isn't anything to the class of people there admitting. Its just the same set of exams. Its the exams that are ' ' 'common' as in the schools have that in common

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 30/07/2019 19:35

Cost less to the parent too. (Prehaps not the tax payer)

GoFiguire · 30/07/2019 19:56

I see you went to Harrow, sadonions 😂

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 30/07/2019 21:20

Well figure i'm not sure why yoj would think a female dyslexic autistic kid from council estate went to harrow.

Clearly however they havent invented google in where ever you live though because i actally just put in to google why is common enterence called that.

I'm very sorry you have a chip on your shoulder doesn't mean that you were right though.

Pixie2015 · 30/07/2019 21:27

Why not do a term at each then will turn out perfect ?

GoFiguire · 30/07/2019 21:52

I’m really glad I’m not rich enough to have such awful worries.

Inches · 30/07/2019 22:19

Home educate and have a tutor in Braying Skills?

peteneras · 31/07/2019 07:44

"Awaits that strange guy to tell you all how wonderful Eton is."

Well, if you don't already know, Eton is bloody wonderful! It has given you Prime Minister No. 20 just this last week, hasn't it? Smile

And you seem to have an unhealthy fascination about Eton, what gives? Got a son there?

"I'm very sorry you have a chip on your shoulder doesn't mean that you were right though."

Absolutely, Sadonions - the envy must be most uncomfortable. . . What with that heavy log bearing you down! Grin

Isatis · 31/07/2019 07:57

Not something to be proud of, to be honest.

peteneras · 31/07/2019 08:08

Like most things under the sun, there are different views of the same object/subject.

Walkaround · 31/07/2019 08:49

Grin I'm sure telling his peers at Harrow that the boys of Eton were too clever for him, insipid and had tiny dicks will be just the ticket.

GoFiguire · 31/07/2019 11:58

What makes you think the strange guy Is you pete?

peteneras · 31/07/2019 13:10

Strange guy need not be pete for pete to write what that was written!

So, why the fascination about all things Eton and Harrow?

Walkaround · 31/07/2019 15:47

peteneras - obviously you wouldn't understand the fascination with Harrow, but you seem to have a fascination about Eton yourself, judging by your reliable appearance whenever the name is evoked. Are you the Eton genie? Grin
As for the fascination with Eton, you would have to be a fool not to take an intense interest in an institution from which so many prime ministers have emanated, particularly if the leaders it has produced in recent years appear to lack any sense of responsibility or self-discipline.
