We've survived year 7 (just). This is a support thread for year 8 parents - a continuation of the starting secondary support threads though parents of children in other years are welcome to join / ask questions.

From September I have a year 8 (ASD) DS and a year 9 DD.

Hope everyone has a great summer holiday.

My kids school do year 9 options for year 10 though also have year 8 options for year 9 so DS y8 is dropping food tech - DD is y9 and we are waiting to here about options, well we're waiting for both. They do start GCSE courses in year 9 for core subjects anyway, well top set do at least. In theory DD has 2 GCSEs in year 10 but not sure what will happen now.

Hi, I was in a pre year 7/year 7 thread which I think some of you were probably on too. Mainly placemarking now.

@elkiedee yes, this started as a year 7 thread.

Ds' school does one option in year 9, then a couple of 3 year options, then one 2 year option in years 10/11.

Most people seem to like it. I'm not totally convinced (especially with dd1 who did French as her year 9 option, which I didn't feel she was ready for). But they hold consultations regularly about it, and the feedback they get is overwhelmingly positive from all of parents, teachers and pupils. Ds thinks it's great because he can give up art next year. Grin

DS gets to choose 4 out of 8 of drama, business, engineering, design, art, music, dance and food tech. He's delighted to stop music, dance and food tech. Business he says you can teach yourself from Netflix so he's gone for the other 4 including art Shock I often get messages from the art teacher he's got upset in art but he asked for me to move it up his preference list to ensure he gets it. Sure the art teacher will be happy Grin He talks about business non-stop.

Chickens have been singing a lot, DS was worried but i looked it up and apparently they do this just before laying their eggs so we are awaiting our first eggs.

Just to add for a different weekend, ds had his appendix out.

He's most put out that he doesn't get to miss school, but it saves any dilemma about if the school reopens in his year. He doesn't get to go back this term as the risk after an op is higher.

Sorry only just saw this - hope your DS is recovered now Witchend
