Is school then 'out' or do pupils continue attending until the end of term?

Usually, the year 11s officially leave before the exams start and then just come back in for their exams

Hollowvictory · 10/06/2019 10:09

They've already finished they just go in for exams

longnight · 10/06/2019 10:09

Ds1 was sent home last week after his morning exam and told to come in only for exams and revision classes he finishes after an exam on Friday and been told the next time he is to go to school is 22nd august. I'm not sure what other schools are doing though

RobertSmithdoesmyhair · 10/06/2019 10:10

School out and they need to find a summer job..otherwise they sit on their xbox for 10 weeks!

dementedpixie · 10/06/2019 10:10

I'm in Scotland and dd has sat Nat5 exams (GCSE equivalent). She had now gone back to school and they have started the next year's curriculum/ timetable

SilentSister · 10/06/2019 11:35

No simple answer, it seems to vary significantly between schools and whether you are continuing into 6th Form at your current school. I think generally, if Yr11 is your last year at your school, you are off once exams are finished. For DD who is staying at her school for 6th form, she is off (she has actually had study leave since Easter), but then they do a couple of days of "moving on" celebrations, and prize giving, which are compulsory, so you have to come back in for those whether you are staying or going. Actually a bit of a pain, as we can't therefore take an early holiday !

Unformidable · 10/06/2019 12:33

Thank you all. I think it should be clearer what happens, and ds' school has still not told us what's happening - Friday is the last exam.

Legally they don't have to attend after the last Friday in June - as long as they are already 16. They also can't start work or increase hours until this date. In the UK anyway.

Dd school has released them on study leave this week only, they have 3 exams left. Some students have been on study leave since the exams started but are not allowed to attend prom.

Numbersaremything · 10/06/2019 12:46

Are they continuing in sixth form in the same school? In my part of the country, you leave on the day of your last exam & pop back for a final assembly. The next few weeks are a whirl of college taster days and prom prep, as everyone has to move to a college.

SquirmOfEels · 10/06/2019 12:51

Depends on the school.

Of the two I know we'll round here, one has a post-exam leavers day, when they hand in books, have a final assembly/prize giving sort of thingand whatever else they do to fill the day. Then that's it until results day (and then September for those continuing to sixth form)

The other sets its work experience week then, and has some other career advice type stuff

frazzledasarock · 10/06/2019 12:55

After exams mine has a leavers party thrown by the teachers for year 11 pupils, the former pupils are all treated to lunch with the teachers.

School also has a goodbye assembly where pupils all receive a year book and gifts from teachers.

It’s quite sweet.

LucyFox · 10/06/2019 12:57

Depends on the school- some let them leave after exams, some have them doing work experience etc, some have them in & start teaching Alevels ... the “norm” is that as soon as last exam is finished they are free till results day!

mrsjg · 10/06/2019 13:10

At ds's school, you leave after your last exam. Attendance is compulsory until then. Ds has no exams today but still has to go and if it's a lesson he has already sat his exams for they just revise for upcoming exams.

He officially finishes on the 17th but has to attend a sixth form taster day on the 21st.

2BoysandaCairn · 10/06/2019 13:54

At DS2 school, special measures comp, they have to attend as normal upto this Friday, last exam, if no exam or finished that day's exam, they go to timetabled lessons as usually. If still facing exams in subject they get more revision, if no exam they do revision with help on remaining lessons.
On Friday they sit exam, do special pizza lesson and a small assembly and then all allowed to leave at 1330, buses booked especially for year 11.
This maybe to try and lift results though.
Three years ago, same school, RI at time, kids had to attend lessons until they had finished the exam in that subject, so since Ds1 school has changed.
No local schools do study leave here.

OddBoots · 10/06/2019 17:19

At DD's school they stay to the end of next week and after exams they work on things like personal finance skills, CV making etc.

Iwantacampervan · 10/06/2019 18:20

My two went on study leave after half term. My eldest had to go in after exams for a morning to hand in any textbooks etc that they still had and they picked up their Prom tickets. During the first week of July there are induction days at school sixth form or at the colleges - after that they are free until enrolment etc after results' day.

BackforGood · 10/06/2019 18:22

Depends on the school. Some have a Leavers Assembly / Leavers Party type 1/2 day after exams have finished.
Many, many 6th forms have induction days in that time after exams.

MyOtherProfile · 10/06/2019 18:23

Is he staying at the school for 6th form? If so I suppose they may do some kind of transition thing but usually the children have already left by the last exam.

PotteringAlong · 10/06/2019 18:26

Our year 11’a are still in school - no study leave here! On Friday morning they will sit their physics exams. When they come out we’ve ordered them pizza for lunch, they’ll get their leavers hoodies, quick assembly with a warning about how to behave at prom and they’re out the door for good!

Mustbetimeforachange · 10/06/2019 19:35

I've never heard of any hoping back other than for leavers events or 6th form taster days. It's a loooong summer Grin

swashbucklecheer · 10/06/2019 21:56

Ours finish after their last exam. But then the whole of NI finish at the end of June. 14 working days left...Grin

avocadochocolate · 11/06/2019 07:39

At my DCs' school (large comprehensive), once the exams start they only attend if they have an exam. As soon as the exams have finished, there is a small party at school and then the prom (Friday evening). Early in July there is a 6th form taster day and after that, no commitments until results day.

behindlocknumbernine · 11/06/2019 07:45

Dd finished the week before half term. There was an assembly for Y11 and a bouncy castle / bbq on the school field.
She now only goes in for exams.
Her summer holiday starts on the 20th June.
Prom is the end of June.

justanswerthephone · 11/06/2019 07:55

Also in Scotland. The school year changes mid May so those who are staying on move up a year. Those who are leaving have to wait until they are 16 to officially demit, but nobody bothers if they attend or not as they have no classes anyway.

I have one who has just done Nat5's and moved up to 5th year last month.

Iwantacookie · 11/06/2019 08:01

Once they've done their last exam that's it.
They might have to go in for 6th form taster sessions but you should of been given those dates.
Ds1 finished Friday & he's most disappointed I said he can help around the house not sit on Xbox until collage starts.
