Eton College or Harrow School 2019

Wornthreads · 01/10/2018 00:19

There are some out of date threads about this subject . Can anyone help identify the current positives in either or both schools? D.S will be going to one of them next September. New Head Masters e.t.c?

For example, Eton - is eat in house or Bekynton the way forward? Or, is that completely irrelevant and should we only consider the House Master?

Harrow, what sort of cohort are we likely to expect?

Thanks in advance for your kind assistance.

I think, absent breathtaking bigotry, telling a fellow MNer to shut up is a breach of forum decorum. Best to ignore them, if you find them pushing your buttons.

OVienna · 08/10/2018 20:16

(Can't believe this crazy thread is running and running.)

OP ran for the hills, clearly.

SillySallySingsSongs · 08/10/2018 20:34

A subject I think I know more about than probably all the posters (to date) put together.

You have absolutely no idea whether you do or not.

As for The Queen I doubt she cares what you think.

peteneras · 08/10/2018 20:41

You asked two [extremely difficult] questions above, HopeClearwater and seem to have joined this thread contributing enormously.

Where did you say you graduated again? And you're a state school teacher?

That explains the state of affairs of our state schools. Now I understand why you're peeping at this thread. Welcome to the world of public schools education!

"...but the prose is top notch. The passion. The intensity. Imagine receiving a love letter from Pete. It would change my life."

Now that's what I call an Oxbridge education - from an Oxford classicist, no less! One who recognises great writing straight away. Thank you, Hingle. Look out for the postman - letter's on its way! Smile

peteneras · 08/10/2018 21:05

"I want one as well."

Letter on its way to central London too, Needmoresleep. Grin

Love the apostrophe fail Grin

HingleMcCringleberry · 08/10/2018 21:20

Thanks Pete! Regrettably I am a lowly Old Tonbridgian, so I wouldn’t use the good paper on me, save it for needmoresleep!

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone that sent private messages with lots of genuine tips and advice. Also, to all the posters here that have highlighted thoughtful ways to discover more about the two schools.

The idea about attending a performance at each school and visiting a couple of sports matches was a really excellent idea and will be arranged - thank you for suggesting it.

We actually watched a play at another school where DS had been offered a place. Not because we particularly wanted to check out the school play, but simply because it coincided with an enforced overnight stay (the school meet the Head Master day started at 9.00a.m). Having gleaned a lot from watching the play, we will definitely arrange something similar at Eton and Harrow.

I started this thread to get more information about these two schools. My only motivation in asking the question was to get some information and ideas that were not generally available or in the public domain. I really had no idea at the time how much passion the question would engender.

We'll now visit again and ask all the questions you have so eloquently (in most cases) raised.

As a general update on where we currently are in the process, here's a bit of a summary and (sorry to say) another question.

Having previously sent us about ten House Master biographies, Eton Admissions Department asked us to pre-nominate one H.M from the ten (with no guarantee of meeting our pre-nominated H.M). We spent about a day going through each HM profile, their characteristics and interests (sport, music, academic), location of house, their tenure in the House (length of service/time left in House), eat in/out e.t.c. Having arrived at a very considered decision, about two weeks ago we pre-nominated our H.M.

Yesterday, the Admissions Department wrote, inviting us to meet two H.M's. Neither was our pre-nom (no issues about that), but one was not on the original list, so we do not have any biography to go from and therefore know nothing whatsoever about him Confused.

Considering how clear, concise and helpful the Harrow Admissions Department has been, we are slightly puzzled that Eton (clearly an absolutely brilliant school too) seems to be a little less clear in it's communication. Can anyone with a D.S currently at Eton confirm if these initial exchanges continue in a similar vein were D.S to become a pupil? Or, if things are more straightforward when this ghastly process ends and we deal directly with the House Master?

Grin Eton is a great school , of course it is , the facilities are fabulous , I reckon ( not being full boarding, Westminster's are better for the size and location - my son went to neither and seems OK ) as is Harrow and Westminster and Winchester. It is near to London and is quite big. Over time not sure it is too surprising famous alumni. However plenty of people go there and aren't prime ministers etc.

OP my honest advice would be to see where your son feels most at home , because either won't be a bad choice ( & he is the one who has to spend 5 years there ) They have a different feel. & it also may be where he has family on hand or easy to travel to etc etc . I would say with that choice , let him decide where he feels happy , because if he does , he is likely to do well.

BasiliskStare · 09/10/2018 15:33

Oops sorry wormsthreads cross post there !

Xenia · 09/10/2018 15:47

Sounds like good advice above. All 3 of my sons could have gone to Harrow but did not want to board which is fine with me. They went to London day schools instead. I am not sure they would have passed to go to Eton. It sounds like you are taking the right advice and will reach a good decision.

InertPotato · 09/10/2018 15:55

Weird, OP. We got both our HM choices. I can only guess they're trying to balance 'personalities'?

Xiaoxiong · 09/10/2018 17:06

Wornthreads that sounds a bit odd but remind me - your son is going into F block in sept 2019? I think this might be why it's all a bit different, at the moment I think most housemasters are interviewing for 2020 or even 2021 start, I can't remember. It could be that the one you prenommed is now full for September and new houses have opened up as boys are lost to College. Who is the housemaster whose name you didn't know? I may be able to shed some light.

But yes, once you get your housemaster, you will have a straightforward line of communication to him and the dame.

peteneras · 09/10/2018 17:25

Thank you OP for the update. As always, the No. 1 FAQ new parents ask about Eton is which house to go for and I can perfectly understand their anxiety. But I can also categorically assure you that you should not lose any sleep over this. I have always said it is not important at all as to which house or housemaster to opt for. Of course, if you get a HM that you like and have similar interests, e.g. flamenco dancing, cheese making, fly fishing, etc. then it's best good to have him as your HM because you can spend more time talking about your private interests besides academics. But don't forget, your HM has 50 or so other boys to deal with.

I am sure you have already seen this (near) 3-minute clip on Eton boarding but others may have not and is posted here for their benefit. For some reason, and I hear this "complaint" time and time again from new parents that they don't seem to discover much about Eton even after multiple visits to the school. From my experience, and other "established" parents would agree with me, the real Eton opens up on the day you send your son for the induction sometime in July just prior to admission in September. You'll see the genuine welcome into the family and the unrivalled friendliness from everyone. Till this day, the sight of the middle-aged assistant dame (matron) of College walking DS down the High Street on the way to Tom Brown, the tailors, with her arm resting lovingly on DS's shoulders still remains fresh on my mind even after more than ten years - reminding me exactly what DS's grandma (my mum) would do to him when she took him out to town.

And to think of it, Collegers don't even have choice of housemasters to begin with . . .

InertPotato · 09/10/2018 17:34

Was your son a scholar, Pete?

ChicagoLil · 09/10/2018 17:39

I think Pete is taking le pissoir.

Yes, he was, InertPotato - spent five fantastic years at College - not necessarily inside but all over the Eton campus which is the point I was trying to emphasise about 'Houses'. You only go back to sleep where you have your own room and privacy.

ChicagoLil · 09/10/2018 20:26

Classy Hmm

HopeClearwater · 09/10/2018 21:11

Where were you educated, peteneras ?

InertPotato · 09/10/2018 21:55

Was he a scholar that lived in a house other than College, Pete?
