Eton College or Harrow School 2019

There are some out of date threads about this subject . Can anyone help identify the current positives in either or both schools? D.S will be going to one of them next September. New Head Masters e.t.c?

For example, Eton - is eat in house or Bekynton the way forward? Or, is that completely irrelevant and should we only consider the House Master?

Harrow, what sort of cohort are we likely to expect?

Thanks in advance for your kind assistance.

"Nothing to do with Harovians??? the school IS Harovians. Do they empty their bins at silly-o’clock and wake you up?"

The boys at Eton are called Etonians. When they leave the School they become Old Etonians or OEs. And they will be called such even beyond their graves! Their teachers are called beaks, not Etonians nor OEs after they left Eton. Barnaby Lenon is not an OE and never will be even though he had taught at Eton for 12" years.

As opposed to Harrow, the bin men who empty Harrow's dustbins; the matrons who look after the boys; the cooks who prepare their meals, oh, and the teachers who teach there are all Harrovians! And of course, the whole lot then become Old Harrovians when they retire. Grin

That's the different between Eton and Harrow, OP!

And I swear I only posted once. Time for a new tablet.

BubblesBuddy · 07/10/2018 16:12

Time to shut up actually Peteneras! What a load of rubbish you are posting! Honestly op, some very bright boys go to Harrow. It’s smaller than Eton and a bit more personal. Some boys there would not thrive at Eton. You will know your own child, op. In the end it won’t make much difference to career or future earnings. It really won’t!

LesLavandes · 07/10/2018 16:32

Peteneras! . Yes please. Do shut up and get off this thread. You talk a load of bollocks.

OP. Whichever school your son chooses, he will have an amazing experience and education. Don't think about future and details. This is your son's time at at school and it's important for him to choose a school he thinks he will be happy in.

wurzelburga · 07/10/2018 16:38

This is obviously a spoof thread designed to attract Peteneras like conributions which reinforce the worst stereotypes.

But one good reason to choose Harrow over Eton and Winchester is that Harrow staff have not been caught cheating in pre U exams.

On the other hand, if you want your already privileged children to get even better results.......

wurzelburga · 07/10/2018 16:43

Great example of the outstanding teaching staff Peteneras describes.

Got to wonder about the senior management team too.

TonTonMacoute · 07/10/2018 17:08

Well, he wasn’t deputy head for a start, and if you read the story you will see that it was a mistake as he sent the wrong attachment by email. He paid dearly for that error.

The boys who took the exam had no knowledge of the situation, so it didn’t really give them any advantage but they still had one of the papers disallowed. But you don’t want the truth to get in the way of your blind ill-informed prejudice now, do you?

There are plenty of schools where cheating in public exams does occur though.

wurzelburga · 07/10/2018 18:42

@Tonton

You are decidedly more virulent in your defence and denials than was Simon Henderson when discussing the issue before a Parliamentary Committee. Blind prejudice? I do not think so.

Needmoresleep · 07/10/2018 19:25

However Peteneras, unlike other posters, actually had DC at one of these schools.

(wonders what former Etonian parents are called...)

A unique style perhaps, but he has more information than, say, someone whose daughter once dated a Harrovian almost a decade ago. I personally found his information a different subject (medical school entry) both kind and useful. I think shutting people down simply because your daughter’s historic experience is different, is not helpful. It is for OP to filter the various pieces of information and advice.

LesLavandes · 07/10/2018 19:49

He may well have had a child at one of these schools, but I think there are other parents of Harrow and Eton boys on this thread also. Imo, he's just vulgar and impolite

HingleMcCringleberry · 07/10/2018 20:22

Pete always cracks me up. Inevitably always derails a thread, but the prose is top notch. The passion. The intensity. Imagine receiving a love letter from Pete. It would change my life.

InertPotato · 07/10/2018 20:41

I'd be surprised if anyone chose Harrow over Eton. It'd be sort of like choosing Hampton over St. Paul's.

HopeClearwater · 07/10/2018 21:32

Peteneras was so obviously educated at a pleb place somewhere, but has made up for it since by sending a boy to Eton. Gosh. Well done.

Oops, I wrote Eton without typing it Eton

This thread is an eye opener for a poor humble state school teacher like myself, with only my Oxbridge degree to show my standing in the world Confused

Needmoresleep · 07/10/2018 22:22

Hingle...Smile
I want one as well.

Some small points to consider if housemasters are equivalent and pros and cons are fairly well balanced
Would your DS find uniform rules particularly irksome as an older teenager? Harrow's have the added problem of the hat.
What is the journey like to both schools for you and for him if travelling independently?
You said that your DS is musical but if below grade 7/8 standard in his main instrument by when he starts find out what the provision is for musical groups for 'intermediate' musicians.
My feeling from talking to students who attended either schools is that Eton allows more specialising in extra activities whilst Harrow encourages all round activities right the way through. Both approaches have their merits for life after school and university.

lLikeCake · 08/10/2018 06:46

I think Harrow turned pete down which is why he's got the hump.

lLikeCake · 08/10/2018 06:48

Turned him down for a job, I mean.

Xiaoxiong · 08/10/2018 12:35

pete sounds like you had some negative experiences at Harrow but if your son's housemaster was Dr Savage then he left in 2005. Eton has changed significantly throughout the Tony Little/Bob Stephenson era, and now again into Simon H's tenure and every housemaster will have changed over at least once by now - so I'm sure Harrow has changed too in that time Smile

OP I'm sure you'll get a much better idea from current housemasters, dames and boys - hope you and your DS enjoy your interviews and they answer any questions you have, and always feel free to follow up afterwards by email as well.

"Time to shut up actually Peteneras! What a load of rubbish you are posting!"

"Peteneras! . Yes please. Do shut up and get off this thread. You talk a load of bollocks."

"Eton College or Harrow School 2019" the thread title says. A subject I think I know more about than probably all the posters (to date) put together. Pretty ironic the posters whom I quoted above should ask me to shut up and get off this thread because I "talk a load of bollocks". What makes them so entitled here that I think even The Queen herself would not dare ask what they ask of me to do, is beyond my comprehension.

Especially when I'm sure these people have never come anywhere near 25 miles within the vicinity of one (or both) of the aforementioned schools! I very much doubt they can even find where Eton's Reception Office is even when given a sat-nav for guidance - never mind making any contributions to this thread.

Nice!

peteneras · 08/10/2018 17:45

"But one good reason to choose Harrow over Eton and Winchester is that Harrow staff have not been caught cheating in pre U exams. . . Got to wonder about the senior management team too."

Talking about bollocks and not having been caught, frankly, you should seriously be more concerned about your sons' bollocks at Harrow School!

As our American friends would always advise, 'Cover Your Ass'!

And please don't let me start on the "senior management team" at Harrow . . .

AgathaRaisinDetra · 08/10/2018 18:30

If pete is a fine example of an Eton parent, OP, then I'd definitely send your son to Harrow GrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

How?
  1. Why does The Queen need to be typed in bold?
