These GCSE exams are the culmination of somewhere between 2 and 12 years hard work. AIBU to expect the exam boards to be able to mark them, add the marks up and copy them over with fewer mistakes?

Stickerrocks · 16/08/2018 07:39

Yay for Superdoodle DS!

Rogue If the worst happens (and it may not) encourage her to go down the BTEC route. What is she interested in doing further down the line? Although she wants to keep up with her peer group, there will be a whole new peer group alongside her. My niece discovered this when she had a hiccup in year 12 and had to resit it with new subjects.

A levels - apparently 2 exam boards were awarding Biology grade As on 55% and 59%. You could get an A for maths with 66%. It looks as though they have shared a similar approach with some of the iGCSE marks we heard about earlier in the week.

Just looked up the grade boundaries for Add Maths. If I'm reading it correctly, 56% will get you an A. I really don't understand how anyone thinks it's right to set a paper where even the best candidates are only expected to answer about half the questions correctly. But I guess it's not the first time in this brave new world of "reformed" exams.

The boundaries are very close together, too, so it could be a bit of a lottery.

TheThirdOfHerName · 16/08/2018 07:52

Much to his and my surprise, DS1 has a place at his firm choice according to UCAS Track. He can't quite believe it's true and is waiting for a confirmation email.

We'll find out actual results at 9.

Oneteen · 16/08/2018 07:56

Great news Third! Yay!

eaglefly · 16/08/2018 08:00

Chicken I saw the same this morning. That is really low and indicative I think of how hard that paper was across the board.

LARLARLAND · 16/08/2018 08:06

Wonderful news Third.

cubscout · 16/08/2018 08:08

Just saw your news on the Y13 thread, The Third and did a little whoop! I think your DS1 may be going to my old uni? So pleased for him and you. Star

mmmz · 16/08/2018 08:44

Well done to your DS1, TheThird. That's wonderful news!

Cherryburn · 16/08/2018 08:51

Fantastic TheThird. Really pleased for you both.

KingscoteStaff · 16/08/2018 08:58

You must be glowing with pride TheThird! Well done him!

Cherryburn · 16/08/2018 09:01

mmmz on marking accuracy, you’d think so wouldn’t you? But markers are paid an absolute pittance per paper so I would imagine have to work pretty quickly to make it even vaguely worthwhile financially. I know lots of teachers do it in order to further familiarise themselves with the marking process, but I’m sure some do it for the money.

I’m always shocked by how low the bar is for markers too. You really don’t need to have much experience. Presumably because otherwise they simply wouldn’t have enough people to do it.

The change to the remark process is very unfair in my opinion. If a tiny proportion of marks had changed under the old system I could understand it, but that wasn’t the case.

I don’t have a great deal of faith in the system to be honest.

hmcAsWas · 16/08/2018 09:04

Great news TheThird - well done to your ds. Such a relief

Rogue - sorry to hear that the results so far haven't gone well for your dd. She really had a double whammy with depression and dyslexia. I hope it all works out for her and she find further study that is rewarding and doable

TheThirdOfHerName · 16/08/2018 09:05

He's picking up his results now. I'm sitting in the car (it's pouring with rain). Plenty of lads have already come out clutching envelopes, so goodness knows what he's doing in there.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 16/08/2018 09:06

Just prolonging your agony, TheThird because he can!
