Oh and if I can butt in about iGCSEs:
I'm from the Isle of Man and was educated privately in England because the secondary schools there were mostly rubbish.

When the GCSEs were being overhauled, the IoM decided to change to iGCSE - they pride themselves on their 'internationality' and 'difference' from the rest of the U.K. The schools are still not brilliant (but are so much better than they were) and they suffer from the fact that the high flying types tend to go to the one private school there, leaving everyone else in the state sector.

We have several friends there who have done 16+ exams this summer. The schools offer a good variety of exams/boards but the iGCSE results will be nothing like those presented by the super-selective privates in England. And for those kids who want to progress to FE in England, I hope that their results aren't put down by others who are comparing them with high-flying private English pupils!

Thanks sticker 👍

I guess on this thread we have parents of all sorts of DC who go to all sorts of schools. What they have in common is interested and supportive parents otherwise we wouldn't be so invested and on this thread. That already gives them an advantage. Obviously private schools also give an advantage, otherwise why would you send them there when education is otherwise free?

I don't really like the fact that the playing field isn't level but that's true for all sorts of reasons, but this thread is generally pretty supportive. It needs to be supportive of those who feel their DC don't have many advantages and struggle with that, as much as those who have plainer sailing through life, whether that's because of circumstances, finances, health or SEN etc.

Sometimes I think people on the thread can be a bit dismissive/critical of those who have an alternative viewpoint. If it's truly supportive it needs to accept that we don't all have the same views but we do try to come together to find some common ground.

I think we can all agree that we hope our DC will reach their potential and will be fairly rewarded for their efforts, whether that's getting their critical 4 in maths and English, getting on to their chosen course next year from entry level at college to selective sixth form, or getting that elusive 9!

Group hug!

TerfTerf2 · 15/08/2018 12:58

Big group hug!
I hope our DC know how lucky they are to have parents who care so much and will do anything they can to help them reach their potential Grin

Cblue · 15/08/2018 13:19

All - sorry, I didn't expect my post to be quite so contentious, especially since my own DD goes to a selective independent herself!!!

I feel like I really need to explain my post, so what I was (very badly) trying to express was......
Many DC have had to deal with disadvantages (social, economic, SEN etc) and their achievements need to be lauded no matter what the result. Personally I would be far more impressed with a DC brought up in SS to drug addicted parents in a school in special measures achieving 6x grade 4 to 6s than I would my own daughter getting 10 x grade 8s.
She has been privileged and given every opportunity. Having said that
I am not belittling the hard slog she put in (boy did she work) and her willingness to grasp every opportunity she has been given. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drinkSmile

Stickerrocks · 15/08/2018 13:35

cblue Smile Time to move on. Do I risk applying for DD's season ticket before She has enrolled at first choice?

Stickerrocks · 15/08/2018 13:39

Oh my goodness. An email has arrived from aforementioned college saying we only need to contact them next Thursday if DD does not have 5 GCSEs at grade 4 including maths & English. This is suddenly getting very real.

KingscoteStaff · 15/08/2018 14:00

DH has gone mad on EBay and bought DS a Paul Smith suit (£10) in dark blue check, a Jaegar suit (£12.50) in dark grey and 4 Pink shirts (£8) in varying shades of blue. Buying clothes for a teenager! Without the teenager’s permission or (indeed) presence in the country!

I have led him carefully away from the laptop and set him to mow the lawn...

WhatHaveIFound · 15/08/2018 14:10

Gosh, this thread has moved on a lot since i last posted so congratulations to those who've had results, fingers crossed to those waiting and hugs to all those who need them.

KingscoteStaff my DH was going to give his old Paul Smith suit to the charity shop and i insisted that he keep it for DS (currently a tiny 13yo) who may fit in for 6th form!

TheThirdOfHerName · 15/08/2018 14:25

KingscoteStaff I bought DS2 two suits from eBay (one Next, one Moss Bros). Each only worn once (presumably for a prom). He's quite slender so needs a 26" waist (and a belt) so I was pleased to have found something that would fit him.

Oratory1 · 15/08/2018 14:36

Aagh you've just reminded me DS now needs a suit for school - not for every day but apparently still needs one. I'll have to drag him out. And yes having been very quiet for the last month or so emails from school etc are starting to flow again I guess as staff arrive back in preparation for the 16th and 23rd.

DD2 is also eagerly awaiting A level results but just to find potential flatmates and course mates on FB (being on a gap year with a place already - a whole other story)

Oneteen · 15/08/2018 15:06

Eaglefly - You have my sympathy - I hope your DD's MH improves...I feel so sorry for some of these DC's - I cannot tell you how much I loath social media and I think in many respects its social media that is have an affect on our teens mental health more than anything else.

HMC - well done to your DD for getting a job.

In terms of the History results yesterday ...the grade boundary is probably a reflection of it being a new exam and perhaps the teachers have not fully understood the marking scheme given its nature is essay based (just a thought).

In terms of the mums with DC awaiting A level results - I am sending you WineGinFlowersCake...I'm hoping that your DC's achieve their goals tomorrow.

Stickerrocks · 15/08/2018 15:15

Can we please all gave some of the Wine Gin Cake Flowers? I would hate for them to be drinking alone at this time of day.

We are all parting ways this weekend, leaving DBIL to jolly DD along in London while I head back home and DH does the same. Ì think DD will be up to a surge by mid week and I'm relieved that all 3 of us will be out of the house at work next week.

sandybayley · 15/08/2018 15:26

@Oneteen you might be right about the iGCSE history grade boundary and it being the first year of 1-9. But I did take a peek at geography as well and that seemed more 'normal' and that's also a first year of 1-9 (90% for a 9, 83% for an 8 etc).

Did anyone's DC get their geography result yesterday?

farangatang · 15/08/2018 15:49

Eagle Flowers for your DD and I hope her mental health improves so she can also enjoy more than academic success in her life (and congratulations for her stellar results so far).

I think as PPs have said, all of our DC have their own personal struggles and difficulties and they are all blessed with supportive parents and grandparents. They have all got through the process and will continue to get through whatever comes next!

Third all the best for ALevel results day - may they be what's needed!

Oneteen · 15/08/2018 15:52

@sandybayley It looks like most students struggled with component 42 whatever that paper was with 60% being the highest marks on that paper.

ReservoirDogs · 15/08/2018 15:55

Sandybayley - yes a friend's DC got a hard worked for 6 for CIE geography yesterday.

DS has to wait for his 2 CIE results alongside his.mixed bag of Edexcel igcses and an OCR/AQA.

KingscoteStaff · 15/08/2018 16:04

Waiting for OCR Geography next week.
For CIE History, Component 4 was the special subject that schools could pick instead of the coursework. And that’s the one DS was so sure he’d nailed! Oh well, waiting for UMS to come out before we consider investigating further.

adrinkofwater · 15/08/2018 16:18

A belated well done to those who got results yesterday - and the DCs with jobs!

Here all thoughts are on tomorrows A level results for DD. She needs 3 As for her medicine offer. Can't believe we finally find out tomorrow!

Good luck to all the others waiting for A levels tomorrow!

Oratory1 · 15/08/2018 16:40

ooh good luck !

Very best of luck to all those waiting for A Level results tomorrow. Hope all your DC get what they need to get to where they want to go. I remember it well and it’s nerve-wracking in the extreme.

I found Wine helped. Or Gin. Or both...

mmmz · 15/08/2018 17:42

Can anyone tell me what "Track" is? I keep seeing mentions of it in relation to A levels.
