The other thread reached the 1000 post limit so I've started this as a follow on

Checking in with all the Whitgift new boys. We have had the uniform appointment, took my eldest along too as he is an ex Whitgiftian. The parents evening I enjoyed and my DS is looking forward to the 3 days sports activities at the end of August. Very exciting! He is starting in yr 7

Pickofthepops · 02/07/2018 12:17

Hi there - asking as a newbie - is there a mock 11+ worth doing as practice for whitgift - most similar in terms of time and content etc? Ie the ones done in tonbridge - appreciate they are for kent test. Am thinking my son might benefit from a trial run of sitting in a hall etc as much as anything.

Anyone else? We are planning to apply for sept 19 11+. Should I start a new thread?

OlennasWimple · 02/07/2018 20:10

That would be a good idea, Pickof

Hello everyone, I'm hoping a Trinity parent maybe around to help me answer a few questions...

  1. Do the boys use the PE jacket? It seems quite bulky and I'm not sure that my son would ever wear it!
  2. Are the boys allowed any type and colour of school bag?
  3. Are the school very strict with charcoal grey trousers? Or can I purchase them from a store other than Hewitts?
Thank you in advance!!
lea8lan · 01/08/2018 07:34

School mum 77, 1. You will see if others wear that. 2. Just buy a school bag of black or grey, any sober colour. 3. Can be bought in other shops, black or charcoal are all fine. There is a list sent by the school on things you do not need to buy at Hewitts. I just bought the trousers yesterday at John Lewis.

Seeline · 01/08/2018 09:30

schoolmum Yes - agree with lea

However, my non-sporty Ds did use his tracksuit top quite a lot (kept him warmer!). Also if the boys are in a team, they often travel to matches in their kit with tracksuits over the top.

I am not aware of any restrictions on bags. Most do have a backpack of some sort.

Most boys wear black trousers - ours came from Asda. If boys are in choir/orchestra they always wear black.

lea8lan · 01/08/2018 16:59

Thank you Seeline. I wonder if we need to prepare black shorts for very warm days or only long trousers are worn at school at all time. Same question about the white shirt, short-sleeve is common or not on very warm days. Thank you.

Schoolmum77 · 01/08/2018 18:44

Thank you for your replies. That's very useful information @seeline, about the black trousers if in orchestra/choir. Black trousers are a lot easier to source! My son has his eye on a dark patterned bag so he can easily spot it. Thanks for your help.

Seeline · 02/08/2018 08:45

lea Definitely no shorts!! Short sleeved shirts are fine though, and again can be bought from anywhere. Make sure to have some long sleeves though for concerts etc.

lea8lan · 02/08/2018 13:09

Well received. Thank you very much Seeline! Flowers

I still need to get sports shoes for my son, who’s starting at Whitgift in September. I have bought non-marking (I hope!) indoor trainers. Could anybody please advise what else do I need to get? Rugby boots and Astro trainers for outside? Also want to know if the boys tend to leave their PE bag at school normally... at his primary school my son didn’t bring his PE bag home regularly...

AveEldon · 08/08/2018 20:29

Normal trainers can be worn outside on the hockey/tennis surfaces
PE Kit will come home at least once a week due to mud/smells

Snowstorm18 · 09/08/2018 22:37

Thank you AveEldon for your response. I believe they have lockers for their school bags but do they have lockers for their PE bags too? Thank you.

Robotsandunicorns · 09/08/2018 23:18

Hello

My DS is starting Whitgift too.... just checking then that they need non marking trainers for indoors, trainers for outdoors and rugby boots? They don’t specify shoes on the uniform list unless I have missed it!

I also presume they need stationery?

Thank you

Snowstorm18 · 10/08/2018 10:17

Robotsandunicorns, the uniform list does not say anything about sports shoes but I remember reading about what type of sports shoes were needed in the previous years' mumsnet threads (I do not remember which year's....). Indoor non-marking trainers are already needed for the new boys activities induction course in the last week of August. TBH I do not even know how rugby boots are different from football boots and whether DS will need both - I hope not!!
I have bought stationery for DS.

meadowbrir · 22/08/2018 11:23

Hello
My son is starting Trinity in September (y.8), so I wanted to ask your advice about the P.E uniform? Which sport is compulsory in 1st trimester? Football, rugby, cricket? Or we need to buy all types of P.E. uniform right now?
What do they need in the first weeks?
Thank you in advance.

Pillarandpo · 23/08/2018 18:58

Hi meadowbir, the main sport in the autumn term is rugby. So he will definitely need rugby shirt, blue shorts, socks and boots for that. But they do also need white PE kit and swimming stuff for PE lessons, where they do different sports in rotation. So they do need it all for the first term really. It seemed like an enormous amount to me when buying for my son last year, but he has used it all - including the tracksuit (and isn't in loads of teams or anything!).

meadowbrir · 23/08/2018 19:25

Dear Pillarandpo, thank you so much for such a clear answer. It helps a lot!

AveEldon · 24/08/2018 16:04

@Snowstorm18 they can leave their PE bags in the kit room
I definitely gave my son a combination lock but I don't think he has ever used it

@Robotsandunicorns They need rugby boots - they need all metal studs - that is the main difference from football boots

They need pens, pencils, colouring pencils, ruler, protractor etc. Basic calculator. School supplies all the exercise books and planner etc

lea8lan · 26/08/2018 07:50

Hi Pillarandpo, Thank you . I went to the uniform shop, it was really a war zone, crowded and good on the floor , in the shelves and over the shelves. So many clients so many small children. It took me two hours to get everything sort out, it is already efficient. But I am still confused about the one inch Trinity logo that we are supposed to stick on the track suits, lab coat, lock bag, PE polo shirt and short, rugby too and shorts. I see a position paper on the Hewitts website for Trinity. But there is already big Trinity logo on PE polo shirt, lock bag, rugby reversible shirt, why do we need to stick one more logo below them? In your year group, have every parent really purchased loads of Trinity logos and sewed on those mentioned items ( it was marked with #)? Another question: does the CCC brand base layer of that Royal blue colour useful at the autumn term to keep warm? Thank you.

MeetieVonWrinkleSqueak · 26/08/2018 08:00

Lea8lan, the 1 inch labels that you have to sew onto the sports kit are not trinity logos, they are large name labels in trinity colours, and yes, everyone does sew them on, I'm afraid.

My son does say he finds the base layer helpful in cold weather, but I suppose it depends on whether your son feels the cold a lot or not.

walkingwoods · 26/08/2018 08:04

The inch labels are the name labels that you order from Hewitts. They generally go below the big trinity logo on the sports kit.

Base layer def useful there’s also a fleece style tracksuit top which my son likes.

lea8lan · 26/08/2018 09:07

Thank you both for your clarification which is very helpful. I shall handle it without any delay. Thanks again.

Pillarandpo · 26/08/2018 09:15

Hi, yes, lea8lan the one inch labels have your child's name on not the school logo. Bit of a labour of love to sew them all on, but I am sure they do help to stop things getting lost (which inevitably still happens, but perhaps less than it would otherwise?!). The rugby base layer has been useful - I picked one up v cheaply at a second hand sale - if there are any things you think you can manage without for the first few weeks of term it is definitely worth holding out and having a look at the next sale (get there at the beginning). Was also good for a spare pair of rugby socks (my son, of course, lost one sock quite early on...), spare tie...

meadowbrir · 26/08/2018 18:31

Oh, I'm so nervous and so excited about the new school, like it' me, not my son is starting...:)
