GCSE results - when do schools find out?

Asking because a friend told me that at her dd's (private) school they find out a day or so beforehand and if a pupil has really bombed (e.g. Not good enough to stay for 6th Form) they will have a word in advance so that there isn't an upset on the day. Is there any truth in this?

Yes, they get results the day before.

ShanghaiDiva · 26/07/2017 13:51

Results are released to the school the day before, but never heard of students receiving results early from the school.

PurpleDaisies · 26/07/2017 13:51

Sorry, they get results the day before but to be totally clear the students don't find out until actual results day.

It means schools can decide who's in and who's out.

PlaymobilPirate · 26/07/2017 13:53

Schools get them the day before - No way would we give them out to students though!

catslife · 26/07/2017 14:16

dd was in Y11 last year and we went along (and hung around outside) on results day. Pupils are not contacted in advance (either those who have done exceptionally well or those who have bombed) but what the school did seem to do was have a well planned routine to support pupils on results day and suggest alternative courses (or sixth forms) if needed.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 26/07/2017 14:22

We find out the day before - this is to check that all results are there and organise the slips that students get. At my school, only senior staff and heads of dept access them on the Wednesday - other staff tend to come in earlier than the kids the next day to get sight of their classes.

If I know one of mine has done badly, I don't say anything before they open their envelope but I make sure I am ready as soon as they need someone to talk to - keeping an eye from a distance, so to speak.

DirtyBlonde · 26/07/2017 14:38

It gives the school a change to see how they have done, spot possible anomalies (re-marks?)

And importantly it gives them a change to be ready to deal tactfully with any students who have unexpected results - on the day the students find out, not before.

And perhaps make final decision (in a few schools) whether to let the press in after all.... TV cameras always seem to find leggy blondes with swishy hair (both sexes)

DataEducator · 26/07/2017 17:04

Yes, schools receive the results on the Wednesday, and results day is usually on the Thursday.

On the Wednesday schools have to download the results from the various exam boards, load them into their systems, analyse the results (headline figures), print statement of results and prepare the envelopes to give to students.

However I have never heard of schools releasing the results on the wednesday. That is a serious breach of JCQ rules and the centre would get in considerable trouble if that was reported.

23rd August. I think those who have issues may be invited in earlier on 24th than general collection time (which is set by each school). Definitely true for A2 as then they get a head start on Clearing.

PurpleDaisies · 26/07/2017 18:08

LIZS they'll already know if they're in clearing because the UCAS website updates overnight.

LIZS · 26/07/2017 18:10

Only if they are up at 7am to check UCAS!

PurpleDaisies · 26/07/2017 18:11

As if they wouldn't be. Confused

LIZS · 26/07/2017 18:35

You'd be surprised!

PurpleDaisies · 26/07/2017 18:36

Both me and dh work in education. Neither of us had ever seen a sixth former turn up without having looked to see whether they're in to uni or not.

Merrylegs · 26/07/2017 18:42

Ha, you were obviously not at DS's sixth form, Puple

I know this year there has been lots of debates about Maths and English, and I wondered how the current markers are getting on?

MaisyPops · 26/07/2017 21:31

School get them the day before.

No way on earth should anything reach children until they collect their results.

Hell, as a member of staff I only get my class breakdown in September when we come back so my knowledge of how the kids have done is based on who I see on results day.

Couchpotato3 · 26/07/2017 21:34

My son's school has said they will be issuing IGCSE results for English and ICT by email on August 10th. I've never heard of this before, anyone else?

trinity0097 · 26/07/2017 21:36

The school gets them the day before, but not to all staff. It would be exam malpractice on behalf of the school to release results early.

LockedOutOfMN · 26/07/2017 21:36

The GCSE results arrive at the schools at 00.01am (BST) on Wednesday, 23rd August and go the students at 08.00am on Thursday, 24th August. Schools are not allowed to make press releases, give any statements to the media or share the results data beyond the necessary members of staff (e.g. to local authorities) until 09.30am on the Thursday.

LockedOutOfMN · 26/07/2017 21:39

JCQ statement: the results are pre-released to examination centres (schools) on the strict understanding that they remain entirely confidential to the head of centre and examinations office staff.

CIE releases its iGCSE exam. results on 10th August. I believe it's at 1pm BST.

LaSurprise · 26/07/2017 21:43

Yes schools and universities always get results early so they can start processing things - but there is a very serious embargo in place so I would hope they wouldn't share results no!

Jackiesprat · 26/07/2017 21:44

Thanks all. My dd also did GCSEs this year which is why I'm interested. Good to know that there should be someone looking out for her if things haven't gone well (let's hope that isn't needed!)
