What can non uni educated/low income parents do to bridge the educational gap

Read part of the parental income thread & felt quite disheartned, dh & I are non uni educated & would be on quite an average payscale. We want to give dc the best educational prospects we can but all the odds are against us so it seems. How can the likes of us bridge the edcuational gap & ensure our dc can compete with kids from private schools & kids who are from homes where both parents have degrees etc... Bit sad reading the thread to be honest...

Sostenuto
Manners well taught will suffice and get you through. In fact the more posh people spoke to me the more cockney I used to speak to them, didn't stop me getting on because I had the one thing they didn't have...talent

This comes across as meaning posh people don't ever have talent, which is of course not true.

Inverted snobbery does not help anyone anymore than snobbery does.

Cookie Dough - I agree. For the job I do now (amongst the interviews), I had to spend half a day with a business psychologist.

When I interview people a cv tells me the basics - I am most interested in whether they will fit in and the way in which they work and interact

i agree good life skills are as important than education i think its down the the individual child they can have both parents unemployed, live in a council estate and still come out of a council run school with fantastic grades. We were at a meeting last night about helping our kids improve / suceed at school ...parents picked to attend were from a school in an area' of social depravations / kids not meeting the grades ...It doesnt work like that i have a daughter top Maths and English class and good grades in other subjects. i also have a child with Dyslexia and hearing loss who is in in the bottom class. if anything i gave her more help and support through school. She stuggled at primary and my concerns were met by "she's not the only one, with reading she was read to by an assistant who once said to me they too long if they do it themselves , i have to repeat several myself times , she doesnt listen/ understand Kids need to have good support in school not just at home to succeed
