Tories pour millions into new grammars while state schools discuss the possibility of a 4 day week

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/03/07/theresa-may-unveils-plans-new-generation-grammar-schools/

In a cowardly move, the Tories are publishing their White Paper on grammars before publishing the responses to the Green Paper which, the best thing Justine Greening could say about them was that they were 'not overwhelmingly negative'.

What a bunch of fucking shite. And where are they going to get the thousands of pounds required for free transport for golden ticket poor kids? The only potential money-saver here is that we know that the vast majority of poor kids don't get into grammars. Hmm Why not save this money and put it into the school that the poor kid would be going to originally? Then everyone would win, including the poor kid who isn't faced with a long commute, the poor kid who didn't get into the grammar, and the 90% of kids who aren't 'grammar material' (decided by a faulty test which puts kids in the wrong school aged 10) who would see more investment in their education which is desperately needed at the moment.

Who said a grammar in every town? There is no plan to return to the Kent model

If they allow current schools to convert to grammars then just you wait. It'll be an absolute bloodbath as schools rush to be the first in their area to get their application in.

flying
At the moment and probably for the rest of time there are/will/be few opportunities for any child that does not have a degree
Utter and complete bilge

  • veg pickers
  • care workers
  • cafe staff
  • hotel cleaners
  • nursery assistants
  • bin men
  • plumbers
  • carpenters
  • bricklayers
  • mechanics
  • abbatoir staff
  • meat packers
  • ditch diggers
LOTS and LOTS of jobs do not need degrees or many qualifications. And they are mostly done by immigrants in this country.
goodbyestranger · 09/03/2017 20:59

noble do you really think that grammar school thinking is so crass it would be introducing practice test papers in the early years! Good grief. Those who oppose selective education are so patronizing it beggars belief.

And to Mum: your experience in your area is very different to the experience across our wide area, where there's been noted reluctance in some primaries to allow any outreach at all. Are you quite sure you have that correct? If you do, I can see that it might well be possible that you're misinterpreting the motives for who's saying what to who.

GreenGinger2 · 09/03/2017 21:00

Why does there have to be one in Winchester?

Ta1kinPeace · 09/03/2017 21:02

greenginger
Pick a town, any town, one that has survived just fine without selective schools for decades and explain what they are missing out on.

Winchester is as posh as it gets and they seem to cope without selective schools .....

Really, how do you misinterpret the secondary schools asking the primary schools to sign an agreement to state that they won't prepare DCs for the 11 plus exam?

I'll see if I can find the news letter that was emailed out to the parents and paste it for you if you want.

noblegiraffe · 09/03/2017 21:06

would be introducing practice test papers in the early years

I didn't say that. I said primary years when I talked about practice papers. I would be pretty fucking annoyed if the only reason money were given to disadvantaged kids in early years was to help them pass the 11+. That money and support should go to those kids regardless of local school system, grammar head interest or whatever and be used for, I don't know, stuff that doesn't have the ultimate end goal of passing a crappy test.

OP posts:
noblegiraffe · 09/03/2017 21:07

Besides, have grammar heads really got nothing better to do than trawl around Sure Start centres or primary schools trying to recruit poor kids?

OP posts:
GreenGinger2 · 09/03/2017 21:09

But not every town has an Oustanding comp anybody can access that caters for all to an Outstanding level so how can you say pick any town? All aren't just fine.

noblegiraffe · 09/03/2017 21:10

Oh dear god ginger Ofsted ratings really aren't the be all and end all of how good a school is.

OP posts:
GreenGinger2 · 09/03/2017 21:11

But it's ok to spend pp on seats or other tests?

You don't speak for all parents with pp kids.

Some would welcome the chance of a grammar place.

GreenGinger2 · 09/03/2017 21:12

Sats

GreenGinger2 · 09/03/2017 21:13

No as we've found.

Good doesn't necessarily mean good for all kids.

noblegiraffe · 09/03/2017 21:15

Some would welcome the chance of a grammar place.

I bet MC parents would welcome a grammar more, because they'd be much more likely than the PP kid to get one.

And the other 90% despair at the effect it has on the remaining schools.

OP posts:
Ta1kinPeace · 09/03/2017 21:15

I don't.
And frankly I do not worry too much about Ofsted as DH has seen enough inspections to know how meaningless a lot of them are.

DCs school was "good" ~ as is the dump near home.
but they are poles apart in what they offer.

noblegiraffe · 09/03/2017 21:15

Outstanding doesn't necessarily mean outstanding for all kids either.

Well there are at least four or five occupations on that list that wont be around in twenty years!

  1. Meat Packers (Automation)
  1. Veg Pickers
  1. Bin Men (people will be required to dispose of their own waste via tips or be required to recycle at least 40% of their rubbish)
  1. Mechanics. Cars only need to be serviced once a year and only need 20-30 Minutes to be spent on them . Even posh car makers are reducing the work and wages available to their mechanics via Plug in Diagnostic machines and two parts that can be replaceable in two seconds !
  1. Ditch Diggers do you think a company in the future is going to pay for a 'Semi skilled ' or actually a Skilled Job, when a robot can work 24 hours for no cost !

Finally there are plenty of 'English' Men , Woman , Girls and Boys working in Starbucks, Costa , Nero , Pret in Stoke.

I have noticed the girl with the First from Cambridge is still working at my local Costa 18 months after graduating !

She has been 'forced' in to doing a PGCE in Secondary Education, because despite the 'prostrations' of the majority of teachers . It is the best Career /Job available to her.

goodbyestranger · 09/03/2017 21:15

Mum yes please, if you could paste the letter it would be interesting. But one still has to work out why whoever is the author appears to be at loggerheads with their colleagues in another school.

noble it's not so narrow as to be about practice papers. And as for the grammar schools having nothing better to do - well, getting admissions right seems to be an absolute top priority for them at the moment so I guess the answer is no. It's key. Why is that a problem for you? Decent leaders can manage to multitask effectively in any event, so I can't see that work at primary level means that their current students are being neglected in any event. As I said before, so many arguments on these threads are black and white and as a result almost meaningless.

Anon1234567890 · 09/03/2017 21:18

Anyone know if their are any studies showing the benefits of improving students from improving a level 3 (old levels) to a level 4. Or is it more beneficial for the country to improve a level 7 to a level 8.

noblegiraffe · 09/03/2017 21:18

Why is that a problem for you?

Because education is a fucking disaster area as it is right now anyway, without heads having to be called away from their already overloaded plates (have you seen there's a massive shortage of heads?) in order to do extra recruitment work because Whitehall have shafted the education community once again.

Ha ha. Shows how little you know about building sites in historic cities.

goodbyestranger Thu 09-Mar-17 21:15:56 But one still has to work out why whoever is the author appears to be at loggerheads with their colleagues in another school.

It was not just one primary head that has broken the agreement. A number of them have.

This is posted on the consortium web site:

Should my Primary school help my child prepare for the VR

The Headteachers and staff of primary schools have no obligation or reason to adapt the primary curriculum to accommodate preparation for the Consortium’s tests. Indeed they are prevented from doing so by the need to remain impartial in the secondary transfer process.

It is wrong therefore to expect primary teachers to coach children to do Verbal Reasoning tests or to devote any school time to practising them. Preparation for the Verbal Reasoning test can be done perfectly adequately at home using comparable tests that are easily obtainable: this is the parent’s responsibility not the primary schools.

There's no mention of the agreement on there though.

goodbyestranger · 09/03/2017 21:33

authors plural then Mum. Same difference. Yes the website says exactly what you'd expect it to say. That's standard.

noble of course Headteachers can manage this stuff too, if they're up to the job of leading a grammar. It's part of the job, not an add on.

flyingwithwings · 09/03/2017 21:35

Maybe will we still need 'Bomb Disposal' though to make sure the Robot does cut through the wires when it locates a WW2 Bomb in a City.

Historic Sites they be better calling in Tony Robinson and the Time Team then !

noblegiraffe · 09/03/2017 21:36

goodbye so you've no idea of the crisis in education at the moment then?
