11+ Sept 2017 London Independent Girls School applications - all welcome!

Hello All!

Inspired by another recent thread and last year's SW London Girls thread, I thought I would create a thread for those of us applying to London Day Schools. I have put independent as I think 11+ has passed for most of us. Anyone care to join?

I have a DD (10) who wants to sit CLGS and SPGS. Ideally she would like to be a music scholar so looking at schools with a strong music department that is a commutable distance.

SWmum the good thing about your decision is that you have two fabulous schools and are very unlikely to make a "wrong" decision!

Hunkydory thank you. Such a helpful overview and I agree that league tables focused parents can skew the impressions of which schools are supposedly 'better'. Shs and kgs both sound more rounded and better for us I think so will see what happens this week with results!

Thisdoesnotgeteasier · 06/02/2017 16:48

Very good post hunky. Fit is everything. League table obsession is quite dangerous. I know a number of girls who are quite miserable at hot house schools that they were "forced" into by parents who were all about getting into the "best" school.

The best school is the one that is the best for your particular daughter. I know my own DD, even if she had applied and scraped in (unlikely), would probably not be a good fit at the likes of LEH or SPGS.

amidawish · 06/02/2017 18:15

fab post hunky and fits in with my experience of the schools too

re sport - does anyone know how the offer compares between SHS and KGS? I imagine there is a much wider variety of sport available at SHS, both extra curricular and choice during games sessions but this is an assumption not fact. Anyone know?

MaeMobley · 06/02/2017 19:12

DD is on the waiting list for Putney.
I am not sure how either of us feels. Relieved because it is not a NO - seeing the thin A4 envelope had me convinced it was a no - but disappointed as PHS is DD's absolutely favourite school.
I have been searching previous years' threads on waiting lists but there does not seem be any consistent message.

Stressedstatemum · 06/02/2017 19:56

Putney did go to waiting list last year. A friend's DD was in the same position as you and eventually got an offer. Do stay in touch with the registrar and emphasise how keen you are. Good luck

DiHappy · 06/02/2017 20:07

Stressedstatemum, we might be dropping our PHS offer, hope this helps your dd to get a place. Good luck!!!

Needmoresleep · 06/02/2017 21:34

amida, a few years ago KGS used to be really really good at hockey. National champions, I think. It was always regarded as a sporty school and we knew girls who switched at 11 from places like WHS because of the sport. SHS is also strong at hockey, and has good links with Surbiton Hockey Club which is one of the strongest clubs in the South East. I don't know what provision is like for B, C and D teams. I assume most of the A team will also be playing Club hockey.

amidawish · 06/02/2017 23:28

i was thinking more re breadth of sport - eg at SHS do girls get offered lots of different sports like trampolining as a games option? or is it just the usual hockey, netball, cricket, athletics with a bit of rowing for those who make it through selection?

SWBelle · 07/02/2017 14:03

HunkyDory69 your comments on schools were very helpful and you seem to know them quite well. Wonder if you or anyone else has views or experiences of WHS. would be interested in comparison to LEH.

cdstandingnow · 07/02/2017 20:20

Does anyone know how many candidates applied to Putney High? Couple of quite strong girls at our school have been waitlisted so I wondered. 550 sat for 40 Wimbledon High places I believe.

DiHappy · 07/02/2017 21:22

I asked PHS headteacher at the open day about last year's number of applications but she refused to answer which I found very strange. At every other school we went to this information was not confidential at all.

Thisdoesnotgeteasier · 08/02/2017 09:36

I would guess, based on the numbers I saw at the interview and on exam day, that is could easily have been in the 500 area for PHS as well. Guesswork though.

PHS also seem less willing to give any feedback (e.g. to girls on the waitlist) than any of the other schools.

Pradaqueen · 09/02/2017 17:33

Just posting to say best of luck to everyone tomorrow.... CLSG are suggesting emails tomorrow morning. Emails for interviews were at 10.00am ish if you haven't heard by 12pm you may call the office. SPGS I think is postal tomorrow? I am happy to be corrected though!

🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀 for all the girls and 🍾🍾🍾🍾 to the parents for surviving until this point!

Thanks pradaqueen. Good luck to you and to all posters for the big results day! And well done to those with some offers and waitlist places already. Only 12 more hours... or so...

SPGS and G&L out today in the post. Good luck everyone.

highclere · 10/02/2017 11:03

Yes for us from SPGS. DD will be thrilled as has always been her first choice by a long way. Hopefully some on this thread will be joining us in the MIV in September. Good luck all.

DiHappy · 10/02/2017 11:34

Congrats, that's super!!! Very well done to your dd and you!

I don't think we'll have any news today, just went out and saw mail in neighbour's door meaning postman was here and there was no post for us today...

amidawsh · 10/02/2017 11:47

are you waiting for KGS DiHappy?

congrats highclere's DD Smile

DiHappy · 10/02/2017 11:49

Amida, Yes, KGS and LU...

highclere · 10/02/2017 12:09

Thank you and good luck if you're still waiting... seems to go on forever!

SWBelle · 10/02/2017 12:35

We got the SPGS waiting list and wondering if they do ever actually go to the wait list. Would appreciate anyone who knows based on recent years experience.
