I'm probably getting ahead of myself (I need to otherwise it won't get done) but does anyone know when you can apply for student finance? I had a look at the website yesterday and it doesn't give an option of applying for 2017/18 yet.

(Trundles off to do tax return which needs to be in by 31st....)

TheMortificadosDragon · 12/01/2017 10:35

Not sure, ono. DH I did my tax return yesterday Halo

No letter from Cambridge for DD in this mornings post, but she just called to say she's got her EPQ result - an A* so she's obviously delighted by that.Grin

JugglingFromHereToThere · 12/01/2017 10:52

Ooh, congrats on the A* Dragon (for your DD!)

HSMMaCM · 12/01/2017 13:25

Excellent EPQ result. She must be really pleased with that.

Really good news Dragon, a huge well done to your DD.

aginghippy · 12/01/2017 13:45

Congrats to Dragon DD.

Why do Cambridge send a letter in the post? Why don't they email like everyone else?

DD's boyfriend is applying to Cambridge. She is planning to see him this afternoon to celebrate or commiserate, as appropriate. It had not occurred to me that the letter would not arrive.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/01/2017 16:41

A lot of the colleges do email. Including, it turns out, Murray Edwards from which she's received an offer from the 'pool'. She rang from the bus - a bit hard to judge exact emotional state, a bit conflicted because after a girls' school she really didn't want an all women college, but had predicted that if she was pooled this would be the outcome.

aginghippy · 12/01/2017 17:32

Congrats to your DD Errol. Maybe not her ideal, but it's still Cambridge.

DD's boyfriend did not get in and he is gutted. From her description, it sounds like he is going through all the stages of grief - denial, anger, bargaining, etc.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 12/01/2017 18:06

Congrats to your DD Errol on her offer from Cambridge Flowers

And Grin at your hashtag!

On the other hand commiserations to your DD's boyfriend ageinghippy
I'm really very sorry to hear it wasn't the news he was hoping for Sad
Look after him, he sounds really upset x

teta · 12/01/2017 19:53

Errol's Dd very well done on both counts.Definitely time for a real celebration in the Errol household Wine and Flowers. Its an engineering course isn't it?So there will be lots of men ( boys) and she will probably be glad to come back to a female environment at the end of the day.
dd1 is also in a girls school and if she gets into vet. Med.( a big if!)77% are girls. So I'm thinking she might not get a boyfriend until 24 which is somewhat worrying.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/01/2017 19:54

She seems to be coming round to the idea of a women's college with remarkable rapidity. Well, we shall see, the offer is eyewatering (A* in physics and FM, A in maths)

Agin - poor lad, must be horrible if they've really set their heart on it. Presumably he's got offers from other good places, or he could think about a gap year and reapply - that does seem to work out for some. I believe they can get feedback if they were rejected which might help assess whether thats a realistic option.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/01/2017 20:01

Teta - yes, engineering, so it will be male-heavy (not quite as bad for gen eng as EEE). Presumably vet students mix with the hoi polloi in halls and societies?

aginghippy · 12/01/2017 21:03

Well, the last stage of grief is acceptance, so I think he will be fine in the end Wink

He got offers from his other 4 choices. He will probably firm either Bath or Edinburgh. He actually really likes them both.

teta · 12/01/2017 21:04

It all seems to differ according to the Uni.Surrey have the Vet campus with the Sports jocks/girls.Nottingham have the Vet/Zoology /life sciences in the country campus.Bristol and Liverpool you move to the country campus for the 4th and 5th year.

teta · 12/01/2017 21:12

Aginghippy this is probably the first major rejection they've ever had to deal with in their lives so I guess it's understandable.
Dd1 was really upset with her Liverpool rejection ( especially as she has no other offers yet for vet. Med and it was just before Christmas.)The worst thing was I was too as I went to Liverpool and my Dad also because he went there too( he took it very personally). But it's all forgotten now.

aginghippy · 12/01/2017 21:49

Very true, teta. That's certainly the case for dd's boyfriend. And it would be for dd, if she gets rejected by Bristol.

MirabelleTree · 13/01/2017 07:13

Sorry to hear about DD's BF Aging. Hopefully in time the fact that he got through to interview stage will be of comfort but too soon for that yet.

Great news Dragon, huge congrats to your DD. I'm with the thinking that an all female environment to come home to may well turn out to be a good thing when on an engineering course.

bigTillyMint · 14/01/2017 06:56

So sorry to hear about the rejections - must be a big shock if it is your first experience of not achieving something despite trying hard.

In a Shock turn of events, DD is going to go and visit her 5th choice uni for an Offer Holders day with a friend. He also has an unconditional if he puts them first, but he really wants to go there - glad DD is going to look because she might be pleasantly surprised.

And in mocks news, she got a very good mark for one of her English essays which then spurred her on to go to "English Club" at lunchtime yesterday (to do coursework) Shock

ErrolTheDragon · 14/01/2017 09:17

That all sounds good, Tilly.Smile

Mirabelle - yes, DD seems to be coming round to that way of thinking.

HSMMaCM · 17/01/2017 13:41

Well all dd had left to do on her ucas applications was the personal statement. We finished this at midnight on the 14th and submitted it. But ... guess what? She was also waiting for her references! Apparently it's all in hand, she's not a baby and I don't need to get involved. The deadline was the 15th. Am I worried? Of course I'm not . AngryWineWineWineWineWineWineWine

HSM there is something called UCAS Extra, is that any good? You are very chilled!

Mocks here in two weeks, no revision done as it is "pointless" apparently when there is History coursework to be done which counts for 20% of the mark (I can see his logic).

Meanwhile I am trying to plan his 18th birthday but fresh out of ideas. I think we will go away for a few days at half term but everywhere in Europe is so cold. I don't fancy walking about in -12 temps!

HSMMaCM · 18/01/2017 10:52

Ono thanks I'll have a look at ucas extra.

Tell him he can get 80% without even seeing the other coursework Grin

No idea about birthdays at this time of year, as DD's is in July. Any cheap flights to Florida?

OP posts:
teta · 18/01/2017 11:56

Hsmm why had the school not prepared the references earlier?I believe you can send the application in a little late and still have offers? You must have nerves of steel to be so chilled.I would not be, in that situation.
Mocks bar one Maths exam two weeks hence are over here.Dd is in full fight mode here so I've passed her over to Dh who will not ask or find anything out about anything! Are grades expected to go up from Mock to A level?

Horsemad · 18/01/2017 13:16

DS had another offer of AAA last week from Leeds.

He has booked on to the applicant days also.

What are you thinking for birthday celebrations Ono? DS's is during his mocks, so we are going for a family meal that evening. Smile

HSMMaCM · 18/01/2017 13:44

Teta - I don't really have nerves of steel. I never even questioned her references, because college are usually on the ball with this stuff and have been talking about ucas non stop for a year. I have been using up all the rescue remedy Grin.

Horse - my nephew went to Leeds and loved it so much my niece is there now.
