Continuing from the year 12 - 13 thread.

Good luck with continuing studies, uni open days, driving tests, etc.

I think it was what tipped the balance on DD applying to cambridge.

theocat · 12/10/2016 17:39

Ds1 has submitted his UCAS form this week (including Oxford hence the early form). Am I right to assume he won't hear from his other choices for ages? I assume the New Year.

Not done this before so don't know what to expect.

If it makes any difference he has applied for Maths. So we are assuming that he will hear from Oxford once the results of the MAT are known.

TIA

Horsemad · 12/10/2016 18:10

Not sure how it works if it's an Oxbridge application but my DS1 (who didn't apply to Oxbridge) got all his offers quite soon after applying.

I think the other unis will just make their offers as they would normally as they don't see where else the student applies to (although it's fairly obvious they have (usually) applied to Oxbridge if it's before the deadline).

BizzyFizzy · 12/10/2016 18:13

My DD's form was submitted yesterday (includes Oxford). She received an acknowledgement today from Oxford and Newcastle. No offers yet ;)

aginghippy · 12/10/2016 21:07

DD says that some Oxbridge-applying people in her form have already had offers.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/10/2016 22:05

Mine has has acknowledgements from 4 of her 5 - southampton evidently had a glitch in their system because she got one from them every morning for a week. Hence the twitching alluded to earlier as they're the only uni she's applied to that offers without interview (I think), and she knows someone who got an offer from there a couple of weeks ago - different subject though.

theocat · 12/10/2016 23:15

Thanks for the replies. His UCAS form didn't go in until today but it's good to know he may get an offer or two in the next few weeks.

I think we will all be a bit relieved when he gets his first offer!

teta · 12/10/2016 23:20

Mines received back a list of questions from Surrey to fill in by Sunday.Notttingham will be sending dd a timed Situational Analysis test too .Not sure about the other two.I've spent the day touring Vet practices to get signed references as not one of them were! She needs five signed in a very specific format for Surrey.
Meanwhile she's in tears tonight as her teacher texted her today's test results - and its the first time she hasn't got an A ( it was a c) and he said he was very disappointed in her ( after 9pm tonight).Bloody hell as if she hasn't got enough to cope with !

ErrolTheDragon · 12/10/2016 23:40

Blimey, Teta, sounds gruelling. And WTF texting test results with that sort of comment?Shock

bigTillyMint · 13/10/2016 06:39

Has the closing date for Oxbridge applications now passed? DD is getting very twitchy because apparently the non-Oxbridge applicants can't put their forms in till Oxbridge is done.

teta, sounds like that teacher is deranged - WTF are they thinking, texting results late at night? And they shouldn't have her personal number anywayShock

ErrolTheDragon · 13/10/2016 08:10

The deadline for early application is the 15th.

teta · 13/10/2016 08:27

I'm not sure whether it was a text or an email as she showed me the message on her phone.I think because its parents evening tonight he promised to give everyone the results of the test before.I would suspect he's tired after 9 pm - he's normally a very good teacher.
I think she had had an awful day .Her Double Bass teacher had told her off for not practicing enough - before 9am and there's a tremendous amount of stress and things to complete for Vet applications that I don't think he's aware of.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/10/2016 08:50

Poor girl - I guess music teachers and the like don't always get that practice may at times be a low priority. It can lead to kids quitting when all they need is a bit of slack.

LittleHoHum · 13/10/2016 09:16

dd is relieved to have got her form in now as it has taken a lot of pressure away.

Offers were very variable for my older dc with replies from universities. The earliest was the week of submission and the latest was the beginning of May! Most came around Christmas / January.

HardcoreLadyType · 14/10/2016 15:16

I hope you don't mind me joining in this thread. I have a DD who is applying for English Lit. Her application went in a few days ago. She's a bit stressed, as some friends already have offers from the likes of Leeds, Warwick and Bristol. She's applied to Cambridge, but also loves the Bristol course, so an early offer from Bristol would be fabulous (obviously).

To follow on from the discussion above, as I understand it, the reason that "non-oxbridge" candidates don't put in their applications until after the oxbridge deadline is that if it goes in before, universities may assume that the person has made an Oxbridge application. Universities like Edinburgh don't want to be anyone's insurance, so they often make ludicrously high offers, if they think someone is also applying to Oxbridge.

So, if you are not applying to Oxbridge, "missing" the deadline by a day or two makes sense. You get your application in early, and it's over and done with, and you might get an early offer from one of your choices. But you might get a slightly lower offer, so less stress about having to hit very high grades. Wins all round!

ErrolTheDragon · 14/10/2016 15:55

Welcome - the more the merrier.

The impression my DD got (from talking with friends with older sibs) is that some unis do what you describe (the only one she'd heard of was Durham) but that some might offer lower to early applicants. Whether in truth many of them actually play these games I don't know!

Horsemad · 15/10/2016 08:41

Birmingham Open Day today Smile DS currently asleep in the back of the car Hmm

MirabelleTree · 15/10/2016 15:26

I've come to wish you all well as DD is no longer doing an A Level having switched to a different qualification which is suiting her learning style better.

I was given a copy of the book in the picture - only a few pages in but it is making me laugh out loud, worth a read.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/10/2016 19:06

One size never did fit all, Mirabelle, glad your DD is finding what suits her. Is she still in Finland?

MirabelleTree · 15/10/2016 20:35

Thanks Errol. Yes she is but planning to return next summer or there abouts, think there is a new found appreciation for the UK developing. She's managed to get some photography clients and is having a steep learning curve re dealing with members of the public, form filling and taxation. In her own words it is 'character building' and we're very much looking forward to seeing her at Christmas - she claims she is now much better at housework!

I Look forward to hopefully reading about the DC's successes hopefully next summer and hope this year isn't too stressful for the parents.

LittleHoHum · 15/10/2016 22:06

Good luck to your dd Mirabelle. Sounds exciting. Smile

Horsemad · 15/10/2016 22:20

Aww Mirabelle, I love your DD's independence Smile Good Luck to her!

ono40 · 15/10/2016 23:48

Welcome Hardcore. Mirabelle, your DD sounds awesome!

DS is ill again, hasn't been ill since we were on holiday in August and I'd begun to think he was better but sadly not. Don't think I can face going to the GP again, it is so frustrating, same symptoms of burning eyes, fever almost 40, sore throat, mouth ulcers, aches and pains. Even Dr Google is useless...sigh...

ErrolTheDragon · 16/10/2016 00:14

Oh, poor lad, that sounds grim. Is this a recurring problem?

teta · 16/10/2016 09:17

Mirabelle do keep in touch and tell us how she's doing.

Ono this has been a recurring problem hasn't it?

Dd had an 18th birthday last night ,but was meant to be sleeping over.Got a phonecall to say I'm coming home at 11.30 - we'll meet you at the carpark. As I drove down the hill her friends mum drove up the hill bringing her home. She had felt unwell and panicy about these vet questions she has yet to complete so came home.
