GCSE remark - worth it?

DS has calculated that he is 10 UMS points off the next highest mark in one of his exams (taking into account each of the three modules). He's also calculated that he's 2 UMS points off another one, in one module, that would take him into the next mark bracket.

Worth a remark?

Possible misuse of 'risk' there - I just wouldn't bother with a re-mark in that case, but up to you/him/the school - they can request the paper back

I was referring to the written CA paper mentioned in the OP when I said the paper isn't written on for marking, that's the one I mark, no idea about others!

hackmum · 30/08/2015 13:25

I'm interested in this. In three of DD's subjects she had Bs, but was only a few UMS marks off an A (six UMS marks in one subject, four in the other two). In percentage terms they actually translate into 79%, 79% and 78.5% (the A boundary was 80%).

The school has advised us that it's not worth asking for a re-mark as six and four marks is quite a lot to make up. To me, six and four doesn't sound like very much out of 400 but I was prepared to be told I was wrong, as the school has more experience with this. What do others think?

Thanks, Gloria - hadn't thought of doing that. We don't have her raw marks, only her UMS. So her UMS scores in the three B subjects were 316, 316 and 314, and the A boundary was 320.

I guess I should ask the school for her raw marks?

If it's AQA you use the converter here

www.aqa.org.uk/exams-administration/about-results/uniform-mark-scale/convert-marks-to-ums

At a guess you'll find it's 2 marks for the first two and 3 for the third.

hackmum · 01/09/2015 09:17

Thanks, Gloria and lifesalongsong. That converter converts from raw mark to UMS, rather than the other way around, as far as I can see, so I'm going to have to go to the school to ask for the raw marks.

Cherryburn · 01/09/2015 09:35

hackmum if you choose the 'convert multiple marks' option it should generate a table which gives the corresponding raw score for every UMS score.

lifesalongsong · 01/09/2015 10:59

You can get the table by just putting any mark into the box to generate the graph and all the details for any paper.

Don't worry about what mark you put in, as long as its in the range for that paper it will give you the details and if it's not it will tell you anyway.

I hope that makes sense

So DD got her maths remark back already and it stayed the same..... 1 off an A*. Ah well it was worth a try!

We're dropping off dds 4 (ouch £) re mark forms today

JanetBlyton · 02/09/2015 11:29

My son's went in on the day the results came out but there is no huge rush. I think he was half a mark off an A in French and that was his only B so worth a shot but not particularly important as he's not doing French A level and never liked it!

nicknamenoname · 02/09/2015 17:10

Can anyone find a raw mark/UMS calculator for the CIE board? I've searched everywhere, but can't find anything.

DS' English Literature was one mark off the next grade up. I think the info the teacher has given me is a raw mark rather than a UMS and am just mulling over whether to request a remark. I'd like to see how wide the grade boundary is, because I wouldn't want to risk him being marked down to the next grade. Thanks.

needmorespace · 04/09/2015 10:11

Gloria
That's interesting. Both of mine had maths re-marks when they did their GCSEs and both were awarded a higher grade (both moved from a B to an A).
In my eldest's papers, over 10 marks were found and in my youngest's papers an extra two marks were found.
It is ALWAYS worth a re-mark imo if the grade is borderline and safe already.

JanetBlyton · 04/09/2015 10:15

Sounds like my son may not be moved up from his only B on his french remark his teacher indicated - I don;t know if that means the teacher or school is told earlier than the pupil but it was worth a try. He was moved down 2 marks too although still remains a good B. Now his maths teacher has had him put in a maths remark as he was apparently half a point off an A in maths. Actually we did expect an A in maths.

thunderbird69 · 04/09/2015 12:01

We are still waiting for the maths marks from school to see if it is worth getting a remark. Not impressed.

Also waiting to hear from 2 teachers for opinions on other subjects.

Not sure if it is because DS is not a high flyer and has not stayed on in 6th form, but they're not being very helpful with all this!

BlueBelle123 · 04/09/2015 12:54

thunderbird we got our DD's maths mark from the exams officer, may be easier to get hold of than a teacher - DD's remark took about a week and she was awarded 3 extra marks(went up a grade). Our exam officer advises it's worth going for a remark if your 4 marks away from the boundary, we didn't bother asking the teachers what they thought! Good luck!

bluebelle - I have been trying to get the marks from the exam secretary. TBH she doesn't seem to know much about it all, I think she must be quite new.

QOD · 08/09/2015 18:46

Waiting waiting ... The school have said they are paying for 1 of her re marks, IGCSE English, 1 Physics one can't be re marked and so we are down to paying for 2

Come on! I just want to hear the results, friends dd had maths remark and gained 7 points !!!! But it's still a D sadly, just a couple of points under a C now

thunderbird69 · 09/09/2015 12:23

Finally managed to get hold of the head of Maths and found out DS was 2 marks off A* (other than this he got 1B and Cs so he'd love his maths grade to really stand out)
The teacher says go for the re-mark, although also said that no other papers have gone up so far this year. Just checked the fees and pleased to see that Edexcel is the cheapest!

Good luck to all those still waiting to get results back

JanetBlyton · 09/09/2015 15:40

One of mine got his A maths remarked up to an A* - results back today which makes up for the failure to get the B French (his only B) up to an A (he was about half a mark off an A) - in fact the French remark was to a few marks lower.

He now has the same number of A as his twin so is feeling pleased and he was in the top set for maths so it was a bit surprising it was an A not A in the first place.

thunderbird69 · 09/09/2015 17:13

Janet - great news on the Maths upgrade!! Smile

QOD · 09/09/2015 19:18

Fab news!
