Is your DM settled in ok, sugar?

bigTillyMint · 02/07/2015 20:35

Oh SugarPlum, good luck to your brave DD. And you! Re the Swiss boy with the personality of a dead fishGrin

auntpetunia · 02/07/2015 20:49

sugar yeah off on 25th of this month. I've spoken to bureau d'change and they say take yen with money on card so somthing similar to your dd. I need to speak to Halifax to see if he can take that card. Scouts say he only needs about £200 equivalent as everything on the jambo site is free money only needed when he's in Tokyo with his host family

SugarPlumTree · 02/07/2015 20:58

Thanks for asking Errol - honest answer is no, notbyet but still early days for her to adjust o such a big chamge with Dementia and limited mobility. But I am quite detached from it all over here and my Brother is dealing with it, I just make appropriate noises when he pauses for breath eventually. Lots and lots of history to getting where we are now and she won't be happy anywhere sadly these days. There was a lovely photo of her and her new Grandson though which was great to see.

BTM , I thought she was pretty harsh but she says isn't as his favourite character in GOT is Caitlin Stark and in her eyes that means he is very boring !

TheWoollybacksWife · 02/07/2015 21:14

DD is at her prom now. I'm putting a photo on my profile if anyone wants a nosey.

DD tried the strawberry and lime Koppaberg yesterday when we were out celebrating DD1's degree success. She liked it. Is this a slippery slope?

Sugar/AuntP good luck to your DCs in Japan. One of my friends taught English there for a year and loved it.

Leeds2 · 02/07/2015 21:17

Sugar, if it is any use to you, my DD flew to the States, on BA, as an unaccompanied minor aged 14. There was a special check in desk, and then they went into a special "kids only" lounge with colouring, board games and wi fi! We couldn't go into the lounge with her, and she was escorted onto the plane by a BA worker.

Coming home from NYC, the mum of the family she was staying with was allowed to go to the departure lounge and see her on to the plane. When DD got back to Heathrow, a BA worker escorted her into Arrivals and made sure she was met.

SugarPlumTree · 02/07/2015 21:23

I can't see anything Woolly, can we see profiles on the mobile app? Hope she has a lovely time.

That is all very reassuring Leeds, thank you. She has flown 3 times but was too young to remember bless her.

Horsemad · 02/07/2015 22:15

I never seem to be able to view profiles on my phone - is it because it's the mobile site? Confused

Woolly - gorgeous photo!
DD coming to the end of her first weeks work experience with very sore feet. She has been watching operations and listening to consultations all week and all that standing around is painful ( even though she is in scrubs and crocs). Its interesting to see her looking all grown up in a blouse and jacket every morning though and to hear the ethical issues she's rationalising.

SugarPlumTree · 03/07/2015 09:56

I can see her now Woolly, she looks lovely SmileIt must be so lovely to see her like that given what she went though recently.

Great to hear about the work experiences, sounds like it is helping focus their minds a bit.

MissClemency, she can't fly direct so has a European connection (landing shortly) and a wait for a good few hours till the connecting flight. With her Airline you can be an Uccompanied Minor up to 17 if you pay extra. If she was an experienced flyer we might not have done it but she doesn't remember flying so it seemed a bit much. Plus if for any reason she misses a connection they will get her on next flight, even if it means Business Class apparently. So she basically doesn't need to worry (and hopefully we don't either).

Rather stressful time earlier as Language School hadn't responded to my email asking for confiirmatiom that it was still the same person who they had originally advised would be doing Airport pick up. They only came back to me once DD and DH were enroute to Airport and person has changed. I was then texting this through to DH and not gettung a reply so wasn't sure if he had what he needed to check her in as they will only release her to named person with photo ID. He did and all was well, he said he is impressed with how smoothly it went. Early night for us if we can as up at 3.30am but she won't be arriving until gone Midnight so doubt we'll sleep.

bigTillyMint · 03/07/2015 13:38

Woolly, awwwSmile

SugarPlum, fingers crossed.

Horsemad · 03/07/2015 14:38

Still can't see Woolly's photo. Sad I'll fire up the laptop in a minute and see if that works!

HSMMaCM · 03/07/2015 17:48

I can't see it either horse mad. I'll have to switch on the brick in the living room to check it.

Seen it now - she looks fab Woolly Smile

LineRunner · 03/07/2015 20:37

DS's prom tonight. He looked great. And that's his last school event. Sigh.

TheWoollybacksWife · 03/07/2015 20:39

Blush Thank you all. She did look lovely - 16 year olds all seem to be beautiful/handsome these days.

Sugar hope you can relax soon.

Canny that sounds like an amazing work experience for your DD. I think the big thing that struck me about starting my first job was the amount of standing. My granny always said buy the best bed and the best pair of shoes you can afford - if you're not in one, then you're in the other. Grin

Horsemad · 03/07/2015 21:33

Great advice from your granny Woolly Grin

I've just been looking at the official Prom pics, they all look so confident - I know I wasn't at that age!

Just winding down, got to get up early to deliver DD to her school by 7:45 with her enormous rucksack. She's done virtually no walking since last year but she has the confidence of youth fortunately!

Horsemad · 03/07/2015 23:22

Good Luck to your DD Errol. I remember DS doing his on his birthday!

HSMMaCM · 04/07/2015 06:07

DD missed her sixth form link day, but her best friend went and apparently they're in the same tutor group, with a tutor who wears a leopard skin top Grin. They have put all the dance / drama students in the same form, so I don't envy her job!

Interesting to see all the info re flying. DD is flying on her own to Spain next w/e. We chose not to use the UM service so she has to negotiate Heathrow and Madrid airports on her own (help!).

We will see her through security, and she is being met at Madrid, and we have flown a reasonable amount, so hopefully she will be OK! They have promised that on the return journey they will also stay with her for check-in and until security.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/07/2015 09:08

DH has taken DD. Waking up to a thunderstorm doesn't auger too well but the organiser is vastly experienced. Meanwhile, I've been busy working on the presumption that if a teenager requests you wash its bedding while they're away, that is carte blanche to bundle all the bits of paper off the floor, remove other detritus and vacuum.
