Average (or lower) acheivers exam thread time?

yolofish · 27/04/2015 00:57

Is it time for this? I mean those of us with kids who will not get 11 As in their GCSEs, or 4 As at A level.

I know most mumsnetters will not be in this particular boat Wink but quite frankly in this house we just have fingers crossed for a C at GCSE English language for DD2, so she can get into 6th form and dance to her heart's content, and for DD1 good enough results to get into Y14 to finish off her media studies A level (started too late in Y11 to finish this time round).

They are not knuckle draggers, or indeed thick as pig shit (both comments I have read on here). They work hard, are good kids - but a row of A*s will not be on the agenda.

Join me please if you feel the same!

I'm beginning to get nervous now.

Have you seen the other thread where people are worrying whether their child will get the straight As / Bs needed for 1st choice 6th forms? I wish I had their worries!

yolofish · 17/08/2015 13:11

yes teen just been reading it and didnt feel able to comment!! I predict a totally mixed bag for DD2, some As and some Us and everything in between. maths is the bogeyman for us, if they've both got that magic C I will cry, squeal, jump up and down, and kiss the teachers...
feedthesheep we are praying religiously for low grade boundaries in maths.

SugarPlumTree · 17/08/2015 14:48

I think the grade boundaries woukd have to be the kind that are so low that you gasp in shock for DD to pull off a C in Maths, she never has on a paper before.

It is a bit hard reading the other thread sometimes but I think whatever your child's ability is, it's the unknown and uncertainty about where/what they are doing next year gets to everyone.

nicoleshitzinger · 17/08/2015 15:21

DD told me she's dreading Thursday - I think it's only sinking in fully now just what a mistake it was not to do any revision for her GCSE's or indeed any work at all for the whole of key stage 3 and 4

But... she has got through the first three rounds of a four part recruitment process for a national chain which runs the best paid school leaver scheme in the UK (application form, telephone interview, personal interview, and the final part is a paid day's try-out in a store which I predict she's do well at). They had over 400 applicants and she's got as far as the final 35. She researched this and applied completely off her own bat. Smile

Please god let her get it before her results come out, so she doesn't have to fill out application forms for other jobs listing her GCSE grades....

thunderbird69 · 17/08/2015 16:05

Another one feeling increasingly nervous here!

yolofish - I'm also expecting a mix of results too, but for my DS it is English that is the worrying one. He only needs 5 passes to do the course he's chosen, should be ok but he was so laid back and showed so little interest in the exams that I have no idea...

He's not showing any sign of nerves. The group that he's started hanging around with all seem to be various stages of dropping out. He only reached 16 last week and is spending time with 17/18 year olds, and he's easily influenced. We hope that he finds a new group of friends at college!

yolofish · 17/08/2015 22:37

nicole that's brilliant for your DD, good on her! proof that academic success is not all that the world (or MN) paints it to be.

yolofish · 19/08/2015 12:52

dont forget, BTEC results look like this:
D = Distinction
M = Merit
P = Pass.
We had a nasty moment with DD1's science the year before last, when she saw the D before realising it was BTEC...
oh well this time tomorrow it will all be over! good luck everyone

I was here under a different name but had to dereg that account earlier as it had been hacked.

DD is out, I'm at home nervous she'll be home later.
I got a text from her earlier panicking that the Edexcel Maths grade boundaries have gone up to 65 for a C this year.
Maths is her real weakness, if she's below a c she'll have to retake, which will mean she does 3 A levels, not 4. That's fine with me, I think she should only take 3 anyway.

nicole that's really good news.
The people who do well at life are not necessarily the ones who get the best exam results and your DD sound like she will go far.

Good luck to all tomorrow.

Lovely to hear good news Nicole

I was told that a C on Foundation was something like 70% for Maths, thought it was a tutor who said that. DD has never actually got that so I'm working on Maths being a resit. 3 is also fine with me, I think 4 would be too much.

No BTECs here this year Yolo but that story about the D still makes me smile !

Good luck everyone WineWineWine

Cheque book packed in case of remark.

yolofish · 19/08/2015 23:21

I looked at the AQA maths boundaries today which made no sense whatsoever, so I gave up... DD2 continued with washing windows and doing ironing for cash. Meanwhile, DD1 in BEST NEWS OF DAY had her 1st ever job interview at WHSmith at 10.30 this morning, and at 1pm the manager phoned and offered her the job!!!! So pleased for her and proud of her; its 6 hours a week to start, rising to 10, with possibility of more over Christmas. they pay £5.45 an hour, so slightly over min wage, and she can fit it all around next year of school. So she is employable after all!! (always knew she would be, its getting to the interview stage that is the tricky bit)

That really is excellent news Yolo Smile

thunderbird69 · 20/08/2015 09:04

Great news Yolo - congrats to your DD Smile

Picking up results at 10am here. DS is still in bed. My stomach is churning!

SugarPlumTree · 20/08/2015 09:32

She's ok. Got 4 plus with the JLPT the Head of 6th form agreed to accept as one she has her 5.

Needs to resit Maths so in seeing Head of 6th form about her options as will need to drop one to resist.

TeenAndTween · 20/08/2015 09:32

DD1 should be collecting her results any minute now ...

TeenAndTween · 20/08/2015 09:46

Yay! She passed everything.

thunderbird69 · 20/08/2015 09:48

Great news TeenandTween!

theredlion · 20/08/2015 10:04

And here I am again...my third NC after having to dereg and reregister under different usernames twice.

Anyway...

DD did ok, A in English Lit 4 Bs, 3 Cs, D in Maths Hmm.
So we're pleased overall, some good, some disappointments but all ok.

Phew Brew

Good luck to all still waiting.

offtofeedthesheep · 20/08/2015 10:43

I am beyond amazed!!! He got a C in maths!!!!! He did so well - 2 Bs, 6 Cs and 1 D. He is away on cadet camp and have text him his reults but no response yet!!

Hope everyone else has good news.

SugarPlumTree · 20/08/2015 10:45

Some grest results here SmileCakeCakeWineFlowers

DD is apparently doing 4 for AS and Maths resit. I think it's too much of a workload so will be monitoring her very closely.

yolofish · 20/08/2015 11:52

lovely to hear such good news, and what a relief it's over!

ours is good too: DD2 got 1 A*, 3 B and 5C, including English so she is safely into 6th form. (lets draw a veil over science...)

Unfortunately sodding maths was a D for both of them, yet again - resits in November!

TeenAndTween · 20/08/2015 12:10

Well done to everyone with good news.

thunderbird69 · 20/08/2015 12:18

Well done all the DCs!

Feel like I need a lie down in a dark room. That wait in the car went on for ever, whilst around me joyous parents hugged their children...

1A, 1B, 6C's, 2D's. Some surprises, but great news overalll. Onwards to college Smile

nicoleshitzinger · 20/08/2015 12:37

English Lang and drama - both B.

Everything else - failed.

She's sobbing 'I fucked up! I've only got three GCSE's!' (She's including the ECDL she did at the end of the year). :-(

I don't know what to say. Hardly any work done for pretty much the whole of key stage three and four, constant internal exclusions, no revision, lots of truanting. I feel sad for her that reality has given her a massive bitch slap - I think she was expecting a miracle. Sad

TeenAndTween · 20/08/2015 12:39

So sorry Nicole Does she have a realistic plan for next year?

nicoleshitzinger · 20/08/2015 12:57

She's 3/4 of the way through the selection process for an apprenticeship at a national chain of food shops. She has her try out in the store she will hopefully be working at next week. She's already had a telephone interview and another interview in person. Luckily they aren't asking for 5 GCSE's.

Just feel very sad that her crappy exam results will go down on application forms for years to come and that she can't retake them.
