I just thought I'd get us started up again!

OP posts:
HasSOsm97 · 12/01/2015 19:13

And thank you, my dd has been my carer since she was at a young age, she does everything for me cause I am severely disable, i am thankful to have her but she needs to move on with her life by going to uni and experiencing a student life!

Littleham · 12/01/2015 19:18

Thanks HasSOsm97. Sorry about your dd with the Cambridge rejection, but she is an absolute star. Her other offers are brilliant, so I think she will have a fabulous time anyway. Durham always takes forever to reply, so don't be worried if you don't hear until March / April.

My dd2 has offers from York, Bristol, Exeter and Royal Holloway for History. Her favourite at the moment is York (with a Year Abroad) but she still has to go to the offer day on 18th February. Will you be going too? Or is your dd doing a different subject?

If it would help, I could tell you what I did to cheer up dd2 from her Oxford rejection. She is moved on very swiftly and is smiling again. Smile

Littleham · 12/01/2015 19:29

Sorry - just noticed your dd applied for Philosophy, so I guess the York offer holder days may be different.

ryansbeat · 12/01/2015 19:35

Can I join too? I'm the rather stressed mum who's beginning to become slightly obsessed about DD's waiting on a Durham offer....I'm just relieved that she doesn't know quite how stressed!

Littleham · 12/01/2015 19:57

Hi ryansbeat. Try to hang on to the fact she really will end up at one of her choices and will most likely be very happy. My dd1 waited until April last year for her Durham offer, which she firmed and then promptly missed one of the grades, so went to Bristol (her insurance choice) which she now loves. It's a flipping roller coaster isn't it?

Thank goodness I get a year off before dd3 applies!

GypsyFloss · 12/01/2015 20:16

Can I also join in the waiting for Durham please? The thought of not hearing till Spring is killing me!

ryansbeat · 12/01/2015 21:31

Thanks Littleham, I need to start the day with a mantra....what will be will be...as you say, there's a long way to go until those results are out. Glad to hear that your dd is enjoying Bristol.

And I fully sympathise GypsyFloss. I think we're used to living in a world where many things are pretty much instant and waiting is not something that's easy! Does your dd/ds have other offers they would be happy to choose?

GypsyFloss · 12/01/2015 21:38

I am chanting frantically Grin

I totally agree about instant answers and gratification. I don't do waiting...

She's got 3 offers, from Exeter, Warwick & Leeds of which she'd pick Warwick. She's also waiting on St Andrews .

What about your DD ryansbeat?

ryansbeat · 12/01/2015 21:48

Those are great unis GypsyFloss, she must be pleased.

My DDs got offers from Edinburgh, Exeter and Lancaster. I think she'd choose Exeter but then again maybe Edinburgh - she loved the city but preferred the course at Exeter. We should be grateful that they've got good choices I know.... but her heart is set on Durham - she loves the city and the course!

Jellified · 12/01/2015 23:13

Evening everyone. Lots of really positive news with offers coming in for the DCs. Ds now has all 5 1 high aaa, 3 x ABB (predicted) and 1aBBC.
Does the mumsnet collective think going for AAA would be too risky?
Agghh it took him long enough to fill the ucas application in and now he needs to make more decisions.

bobs123 · 12/01/2015 23:25

Thanks for posting the link from the Oxbridge thread Littleham

DD has now booked onto the post offer open day at Newcastle as she hasn't seen it yet (she's going on her own!!!) It would make things very simple if she decided to make that her firm as she's been given an unconditional offer. However I think her heart's set on Southampton - a long long way away!!

I haven't read numbers 1-3 of this topic so don't know if I'm repeating what has already been said so apologies if I am...

When your DC have made their firm choice, it's as well to find out when the accommodation opens. It's different for each uni but sometimes it opens overnight on a certain date and everyone waits up to get their chosen spot (Nottingham Trent is a case in point!)

I found with DD1 that her loan covered her everyday spending, and as that is the amount she will eventually (?) have to pay back it made her more aware.

I took care of the accommodation in yr 1. Due to a change in circumstance in yrs 2 & 3 she could get a grant (non repayable) and we found it was short by approx £1,000-£1,500. I found it easier to sort out the accommodation and she paid me back the grant amount. Also when she booked house rental for year 3 I had to write out several post dated cheques 6 months prior to her rental starting, and also had to pay a deposit etc.

Also each uni has it's own bursary scheme so for those with lower incomes there are extra amounts (non repayable) available. Also check out the scholarships etc (extra money for getting higher than offer grades)

All that said - I realise this is a bit premature for some as there are quite a lot of unis that haven't made offers yet...Edinburgh, St Andrews, Durham (some) UCL etc. - sympathies for those waiting

GypsyFloss · 13/01/2015 06:24

Mine too ryansbeat. They have a world of opportunity open to them though whatever happens.

Littleham was it MFL that your DD waited until April for a Durham last year?
Stalking the student room I notice that there doesn't seem to have been many MFL offers yet.

Hello all,
We're just waiting here for UCL (History). I have no idea when they will send out decisions , but am rather hoping it won't be as long as the Durham wait Grin

hellsbells99 · 13/01/2015 09:06

I know accommodation applications for Manchester and Birmingham opened in December. Manchester - it is a case of first come, first served priority wise. Birmingham are giving first priority to unconditional offers and then it is random after results day (which seems unfair to those doing courses where unconditional offers are not being given).
DD1 is now working hard (after partying all Xmas) ready for mocks next week. DD2 (year 12) is now starting to sort out her work experience etc and looking at universities and degrees!

Littleham · 13/01/2015 09:17

GypsyFloss - Yes my dd1 applied for MFL last year at Durham. She was a bit borderline, so I suspect that Durham gave out early offers to their strong candidates & then waited for people to firm / insure. It seems likely that they had a 'maybe' pile. The Oxbridge candidates would have firmed Ox / Cam and possibly dropped Durham, at which point my dd1 would have received her very late offer.

So you may not hear until March / April. No news is good news.

Jellified - If he does choose the AAA offer as his firm, make sure the insurance choice has guaranteed accommodation. We were in the same situation as you last year & it is important to recognise that there are quite high odds in that he could end up at one of the ABB universities.

Jellified · 13/01/2015 10:21

Good advice Littleham. My gut feeling is to disregard the AAA offer as he is not desperate to go there and quite happy with his other offers. Indeed it helps to reduce the list. If in August he does better than expected there is adjustment to consider if that's what he wants. Though I think once he has made a decision he will prefer to stick with it. Grin

From those we have spoken to re accommodation, been told unconditioned allocated first.
Some have said for the others that come results day, they 'try' and allocate in order of receipt.

Have 3 offer holder days booked, plus an audition/interview. Likely to drop the remaining offer as two high.

GypsyFloss · 13/01/2015 18:03

Very happy DD here , Durham offer has just come through for combined Hons politics, French and Arabic . Phew

She knows that she wants to firm that and insure Warwick. Is there any benefit to doing it now/ waiting ?

Thankyou Smile

She will only do the offer days for the those two so I think she will probably go ahead and do it...tonight Grin

Littleham · 13/01/2015 18:41

Well done to your dd GypsyFloss. Bet she is pleased. Smile

GypsyFloss · 13/01/2015 18:56

Thankyou Littleham Yes she is although now there's anxiety is about making the grade. It's an A*AA offer , which when she applied in Oct was ok but they've lost their politics teacher so it might be a bit more of a squeeze. She has said that if she doesn't make the grades she will take a year out , resit and reapply as her heart is set on there. But we shall see when August comes...

I hope everyone waiting hears soon.

ryansbeat · 13/01/2015 19:05

Fantastic news GypsyFloss, really pleased for your DD!
